Wrist Game—the two-tone contrast can make a Datejust feel distinctive without losing its familiar, restrained shape. But “tuxedo dial” is best treated as collector or seller terminology, not a confirmed Rolex dial name, and it does not describe one guaranteed factory configuration. Whether a particular watch is a good buy depends on its reference, originality, condition, provenance and price.
What does “tuxedo dial” mean on a Rolex Datejust?
In listings, “tuxedo dial” generally describes a high-contrast, two-colour dial. Sellers have applied the phrase to Datejust examples identified as references 116200 and 116234, but those listings establish only that the term is used in the market; they do not prove Rolex used it as a formal name or that a listed watch is authentic or original. Rolex’s Datejust collection information does not establish “tuxedo” as an official dial designation.
The terminology has a documented parallel at Tudor, but it should not be conflated with Rolex. Tudor’s official history says: “TUDOR ‘Tuxedo’ is the name given by collectors to the Oyster Prince watches sporting a two-colour dial with large hour markers like the type that equips the reference 7950 illustrated here.” That statement refers specifically to Tudor Oyster Prince watches, not Datejusts. Tudor’s history therefore offers context for the collector label, not proof of Rolex nomenclature.
Why the look suits the Datejust
The Datejust’s design is built around a clear, enduring layout: Rolex says the model was released in 1945, with the date displayed in a window at 3 o’clock. The brand identifies the Cyclops lens and Jubilee bracelet as emblematic Datejust features. The watch’s balanced dial and instantly legible date give a contrasting dial room to stand out without changing the basic character of the model.

- Bulova's Men's Classic Automatic Collection features meticulously crafted beautiful timepieces with self-winding movements that are powered by the motion of your wrist.
- 3 Hand, Automatic, Full Skeleton
- Gold-Tone Stainless Steel
- Sapphire Crystal
- 100M Water Resistant and 3 Year Limited Warranty
Rolex’s history places the introduction of the Cyclops lens in 1953 and an integrated-bracelet Datejust milestone in 1974. Those are Datejust history points—not evidence that a “tuxedo dial” debuted in either year. Rolex’s Datejust history is useful for the model’s timeline, but it does not establish the origin of this dial label.
How to judge a seller-described example
Do not buy on the nickname alone. Start with the exact reference and ask for clear, straight-on photographs of the dial, plus detailed views of the case, bezel, bracelet and clasp. Compare the watch’s configuration with reliable documentation for that specific reference, and have a qualified watchmaker or other trusted specialist assess it before purchase when possible.

- Gold tone stainless steel case 40mm diameter x 14mm thick; Exhibition case back; Blue dial; Luminous hands and hour markers
- NH35A Japanese Automatic movement, 24 jewel; Assembled in Malaysia; Watch weight: 152 grams
- Gold tone stainless steel band, 205mm L x 20mm W; Band is adjustable by adding/removing links; Fold over safety clasp
- Mineral crystal; Screw-down crown; Unidirectional stainless steel coin edge bezel with blue top bezel ring; 200 meter water resistant: Suitable for professional marine activity and surface water sports. Suitable for diving.
- Dial and reference: Confirm the reference and investigate whether the dial is documented for that watch. A seller’s “tuxedo” description is not evidence of factory originality.
- Condition and service: Ask about polishing, replacement parts, repairs and service records. Request close-ups that show dial printing, hands, markers, case edges and bracelet wear.
- Provenance and authentication: Review available ownership and service documentation, and use an independent professional assessment appropriate to the purchase. A listing or photograph alone cannot authenticate a watch.
- Price: Compare the asking price with genuinely comparable examples of the same reference and condition. The available information here does not establish a market value or price range for Datejusts described as tuxedo-dial.
Rolex’s current collection is useful context, not a template for judging an older watch. The brand describes Datejusts in 31, 36 and 41 mm sizes, with Oystersteel and 18 ct gold case options; Datejust 36 and 41 are offered with Oyster or Jubilee bracelets in the collection information. Rolex’s newsroom overview describes that current lineup, but it cannot establish the correct original configuration, authenticity or value of a vintage or discontinued example.
Older tuxedo-described Datejust or current model?
| What to compare | Seller-described older example | Current Datejust collection context |
|---|---|---|
| Dial evidence | Verify the exact reference and whether the dial is appropriate and original; “tuxedo” is seller or collector terminology. | Rolex’s current collection information does not establish “tuxedo” as a formal dial name. |
| Size | Confirm the individual watch’s size from its reference and specifications. | Rolex describes Datejust sizes of 31, 36 and 41 mm. |
| Metal and bracelet | Inspect the actual watch and verify its configuration against reference-specific documentation. | Rolex describes Oystersteel and 18 ct gold case options; Datejust 36 and 41 are offered with Oyster or Jubilee bracelets. |
| Condition and service | Judge the individual watch, including wear, repairs and service history. | A current model’s specifications say nothing about the condition or service history of an older watch. |
| Provenance, authenticity and price | Assess documentation, obtain an appropriate independent check and compare like-for-like asking prices. | Current lineup details do not authenticate or price an older example. |
