The Rolex Oysterdate Precision 6694 is a compact, understated vintage Rolex with one defining quirk: you wind it by hand. That daily ritual, its 34 mm case and classic date display make it appealing to some collectors; the small fit, non-quickset date and variable condition of old examples make it a poor match for others. Whether it is a wrist game depends on enjoying the interaction—and inspecting the individual watch carefully.
What is the Rolex Precision 6694?
The reference 6694 is a stainless-steel Oysterdate Precision with a date at 3 o’clock and a manually wound movement. Michael Stockton’s March 4, 2020 Fratello review describes a 34 mm example powered by caliber 1225. A reference guide from Bob’s Watches also lists caliber 1210 on some older examples, so the movement should be checked against the specific watch rather than assumed from the reference alone.
The described configuration has running seconds, a smooth fixed bezel, an acrylic crystal with a Cyclops date magnifier, and a manual-wind movement. Stockton’s caliber 1225 example has 17 jewels and runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour. Production details and parts can vary across this vintage reference; these specifications are not a guarantee that every watch has retained its original configuration.
What wearing and winding it are like
The appeal of winding by hand
The 6694 is not an automatic Rolex: it needs to be wound by its wearer. For someone who enjoys a small daily interaction with a watch, that is part of its character. If you want a watch that keeps running without a winding routine, it is a drawback. The general Rolex care and service guidance is not a 6694-specific manual, so use the instructions appropriate to the particular watch and have uncertain winding or crown action assessed by a watchmaker.

A date without quickset
The date does not quick-set. If the watch has stopped, correcting the calendar across several days takes extra effort compared with a quickset date. Consider whether you will wear it regularly and whether you are comfortable advancing the date manually when needed.
Compact, restrained proportions
At 34 mm, the case is modest by many contemporary watch standards. The Oyster case, acrylic crystal and Cyclops give it more visual presence than the diameter alone suggests, but the best way to judge the fit is to try one on. Stockton expressed a personal preference for silver, black or blue dials and for a later example with a thicker case and solid-link bracelet; that is one collector’s taste, not a universal ranking of variants.

What to inspect before buying
Condition and originality can differ substantially between vintage examples. Stockton noted poor or aftermarket dials and over-polished cases among listings he encountered. A reference guide also cautions that service dials or mismatched parts may change a watch’s configuration. Those are reasons to examine a particular example, not proof that any given listing is incorrect.
- Dial and hands: Check printing, layout, date window, hands and luminous material for a coherent configuration. Ask whether any dial or hands are service replacements, and request clear photographs.
- Case: Look at the lug shape and case edges. Heavy polishing can soften the original lines; compare the case from multiple angles rather than relying on a single seller photo.
- Crown and movement: Ask a qualified watchmaker to assess winding action and movement condition. Do not force a crown that feels rough or resists winding.
- Date and operation: Confirm that the date changes and that the watch runs as expected. Because there is no quickset date, allow for the extra time needed to set it.
- Bracelet and end links: Check condition and fit, and ask whether the bracelet belongs to the watch or is a later replacement.
- History and paperwork: Request service records, seller documentation and a written condition description. Missing records do not by themselves establish a fault, but they leave more unknowns for a buyer to resolve.
If you cannot verify originality or mechanical condition yourself, make a purchase conditional on an independent inspection by a watchmaker familiar with vintage Rolex. The cited reference guides can help frame questions, but they cannot authenticate an individual watch.

Is a vintage 6694 safe around water?
No vintage Oyster case name guarantees that a particular decades-old watch remains water resistant. Bob’s Watches warns that vintage examples may no longer be as water resistant as they once were. Rolex’s general guidance says the crown must be fully secured to maintain waterproofness, but that does not certify the seals or condition of a specific 6694. Have the watch’s sealing and water resistance checked before exposing it to water; do not assume it is safe for swimming.
What about servicing?
Rolex describes a general service process involving inspection and an estimate, movement dismantling, cleaning and lubrication, replacement of parts that do not meet Rolex requirements, case sealing and water-resistance testing. Its process also describes a two-year international service guarantee after a completed service. These are general Rolex service terms, not a guarantee that every vintage 6694 will be accepted, what a particular service will cost, or what parts will be replaced. Rolex’s FAQ recommends service approximately every ten years depending on model and actual use; for an individual vintage watch, ask a watchmaker to assess its condition. See Rolex’s service FAQ for the brand’s general guidance.

How should you judge the price?
The 6694 is discontinued and bought on the secondary market. Stockton discussed one listing at €3,511 in his March 4, 2020 review; that is a historical asking price, not a current valuation. Bob’s Watches displays price ranges, but its page does not establish a date that would make those figures reliable current market evidence. Compare recent, dated sales and listings for watches in similar condition and with similar originality, movement, service history and included bracelet. No present-day market price or value ranking is established here.
So, wrist game or crying shame?
It is a wrist game if you want a restrained vintage Rolex, like the tactile habit of hand-winding, and are comfortable with a 34 mm watch and a slower date-setting process. It is a crying shame for someone who expects modern convenience, wants a larger case, or is unwilling to account for the inspection and service uncertainties that come with a vintage watch. The deciding factor is not the reference number by itself: it is whether the specific example is sound, correctly represented and a good fit for your wrist and habits.
