Wrist Game or Crying Shame? The Omega Speedmaster Reduced 3510.50.00

The 39 mm automatic Speedmaster Reduced has real appeal, but it is not a smaller Moonwatch in movement or NASA history. Here’s what the 3510.50.00 offers and what to check before buying.

The Omega Speedmaster Reduced is worth considering if you want a compact, automatic chronograph with Speedmaster styling. Its 39 mm case and self-winding movement make it a different proposition from the larger, hand-wound Moonwatch—not a smaller version of the same watch. The name does not confer the Moonwatch’s NASA history, either. Our editorial verdict: a compelling Speedmaster for the right priorities, provided the specific pre-owned example is sound and its price reflects its condition.

What is the Speedmaster Reduced?

Reference 3510.50.00 is the black-dial stainless-steel Speedmaster often called the “Reduced.” Omega’s Japanese regional product page lists it as discontinued and gives it a 39 mm case, reinforced plastic crystal, automatic calibre 3220, 40-hour power reserve, and water resistance of 3 bar (30 m / 100 ft). Its listed functions include a chronograph, small seconds, and tachymeter. Omega’s product page establishes those specifications for this reference; its regional listing does not establish availability in other markets.

Specialist sources date the Reduced’s introduction to 1988. Phillips describes its movement as an ETA 2892-A2 automatic base paired with a Dubois Dépraz 2020 chronograph module; Hodinkee likewise describes calibre 3220 as an ETA-based automatic calibre with a Dubois Dépraz chronograph module. That modular architecture is a key distinction from the Moonwatch movement, not a reason by itself to judge the watch good or bad. Phillips and Hodinkee provide the historical and movement context.

Reduced vs. Moonwatch: what is actually different?

“Moonwatch” here refers to the modern Speedmaster Professional in Omega’s manual for reference 310.32.42.50.04.001. That is one specific modern reference, not every Speedmaster Professional ever made. The comparison makes clear why “Reduced” should not be read as “the same watch, only smaller.”

Historical association The sources cited here do not establish that this reference received NASA’s qualification or flew on a lunar mission. Omega’s Speedmaster history describes the NASA qualification at the model-family level; consult the history note below rather than treating it as a specification of every reference.

Specifications are from Omega’s Reduced listing and Omega’s manual for reference 310.32.42.50.04.001. The two watches suit different preferences: the Reduced offers automatic winding and a smaller listed diameter, while the cited Moonwatch is larger, manually wound, and has different movement and water-resistance specifications.

Does the Reduced have the Moonwatch’s NASA history?

Do not assume so. Omega’s historical account says that on March 1, 1965, NASA declared the Speedmaster “Flight Qualified for all Manned Space Missions.” That is Omega’s account of the qualification of the Speedmaster; it does not establish that the later reference 3510.50.00 itself received that qualification or was worn on a lunar mission. The distinction matters: a shared family name and design cues are not proof of an identical mission history. Omega’s April 29, 2025 history page gives the qualification context.

Why choose one?

The case for the Reduced

  • You want an automatic chronograph rather than a watch that needs manual winding.
  • A 39 mm listed case is more appealing to you than the 42 mm size of the cited modern Moonwatch.
  • You like the Speedmaster look but do not require the Moonwatch’s specific movement or historical association.

Reasons to look elsewhere

  • You specifically want a modern Moonwatch Professional with calibre 3861 and its documented configuration.
  • You want the Reduced to be a historically equivalent or technically identical substitute. It is neither.
  • You would rather avoid the uncertainty involved in assessing a discontinued pre-owned mechanical chronograph.

  1. Confirm the reference. Check that the watch offered is 3510.50.00, rather than assuming every automatic or smaller Speedmaster is the same model.
  2. Assess condition and originality. Examine the case, dial, hands, crystal, and visible wear; ask whether parts have been replaced and whether the seller can document those changes.
  3. Request service documentation. Ask for dated invoices or other records, and clarify what work was done. If the records are absent or unclear, factor that uncertainty into your decision.
  4. Evaluate the seller. Review the seller’s reputation, return terms, and willingness to answer specific questions. Consider an inspection by a qualified watchmaker before committing.
  5. Compare the particular watch, not just the reference. Condition, documentation, originality, and seller confidence should inform whether the asking price makes sense to you.
