Yes. Red Dot lists the Mi Band 2 as a laureate in Product Design 2017. Its record credits Huami of Hefei, China, as both manufacturer and in-house design company. The product was marketed as the Xiaomi Mi Band 2, but the award page does not credit Xiaomi as its manufacturer or designer.
What award did the Mi Band 2 receive?
The official Red Dot project record identifies the product as the Mi Band 2 and places it in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017. It is listed as a standard Red Dot, not as “Red Dot: Best of the Best.”
The distinction matters: Red Dot describes its standard award as recognition for high design quality, while Best of the Best is a separate top distinction for the best products in a category. The award overview also says the jury considers factors such as innovation, functionality, formal quality, ergonomics, durability, emotional content, product periphery, self-explanatory quality and ecological compatibility (Red Dot award overview).
Why is it called the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 if Red Dot credits Huami?
“Xiaomi Mi Band 2” is the familiar consumer-facing name: Xiaomi presented the band through its product ecosystem and its global Mi Band 2 page. The award record, however, names Huami as the manufacturer and in-house design company. These are different kinds of attribution: Xiaomi is part of the product’s consumer identity, while Huami is the company Red Dot formally credits on this award listing.

For accuracy, the claim is best phrased as: Huami’s Mi Band 2 received a Red Dot Award in Product Design 2017. Saying the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 “won” is understandable shorthand, provided it is not used to imply that Red Dot credited Xiaomi as the designer.
What did the jury recognize in its design?
Red Dot’s description emphasizes a tracker intended to sit comfortably on the wrist without drawing much attention. Its slim body, soft strap and display integrated into the band supported a restrained look for both exercise and everyday wear. A circular, milled-metal control button provided a small visual focal point rather than turning the device into a watch-like screen.

The design joined basic fitness functions to a compact form: information could be checked at a glance, while the band remained visually discreet. That is a design judgment, not evidence that its measurements were more accurate than those of competing trackers.
What was the Mi Band 2?
Xiaomi’s product page describes a fitness band with a 0.42-inch OLED display and touch button. It lists step counting, heart-rate measurement, sleep tracking, idle alerts, and call and message notifications, with the Mi Fit app used for histories and related functions. The page specifies Bluetooth 4.0 BLE, IP67 water and dust resistance, interchangeable bands, a claimed standby time of up to 20 days, and a listed device weight of 7.0 grams (Xiaomi’s Mi Band 2 page).

Those are legacy product specifications, not independently verified performance results. In particular, the page’s “up to 20 days” figure is a manufacturer claim, and the listed heart-rate and sleep features should be understood as consumer tracking functions, not medical diagnosis.
Why did its design differ from a conventional smartwatch?
The Mi Band 2 prioritized a narrow, low-profile wristband over a watch-like case. Its small screen and single touch control offered limited, glanceable interaction rather than an app-rich experience. This restrained approach is consistent with Red Dot’s praise for its unobtrusive appearance and with Xiaomi’s listed features and specifications.

The trade-off was straightforward: a small display and minimal controls helped keep the band simple and visually quiet, but offered less room and flexibility than a smartwatch. The advertised long standby time also sat alongside a limited feature set; it should not be read as proof of superior battery life against other products.

The Red Dot listing establishes that a professional jury recognized the product’s design quality in the 2017 Product Design program. It does not establish that the Mi Band 2 was the best wearable of 2017, the most accurate fitness tracker, medically reliable, or more durable than every competitor. Nor does the award make it a good purchase today: present-day app support, phone compatibility, battery condition and availability require separate checks.

- High quality USB Charging Cable for Xiaomi Mi Band 2 (NOT compatible for Mi Band 1)
- Gold-plated joints offer great eletrical conductivity and up to 480 Mbps ultra-fast transfer rate
- It has been detected by more than 3000 times anti-sway test(high use frequency, soft line, abrasion- resistance, bend-resistance with long durability)
- All quality and safety checked, these are an affordable way to keep you going
- 1 x USB Charger for Xiaomi MI Band 2(No tracker)Friendly customer service will solve the problem for you within 24 hours.
The IP67 specification should also not be casually translated as “swim-proof.” Xiaomi lists the rating, but the cited product page does not establish suitability for swimming. Likewise, Bluetooth 4.0 and the page’s original compatibility information describe the product’s era, not confirmed compatibility with current phones.
Why do the official pages give different weights?
The Red Dot project page describes the tracker as weighing 19 grams, while Xiaomi’s product page lists 7.0 grams. The pages do not explain whether they refer to different configurations, such as the sensor alone versus the band with strap, or use different measurement conventions. Both figures should therefore be reported with their source rather than treating one as a correction of the other.
Does the award make the Mi Band 2 worth buying now?
No conclusion about current value follows from a 2017 design award. Xiaomi’s global page currently displays an unavailable-in-area message rather than a normal purchase offer, and it does not provide a current price. For a used or old-stock unit, a buyer would need to verify battery condition, working app and phone compatibility, return terms, and whether suitable replacement bands are available. The award is meaningful as product history, not as a buying recommendation.
A newer Xiaomi- or Redmi-family band may be a more practical category to investigate, but it is not the same device and does not share the Mi Band 2’s award record. Current models, regional availability, price and compatibility should be checked against the buyer’s country and needs.
