Buy the standard S4 for its watch-like design, bright AMOLED display, interchangeable bezels, notifications, casual workouts, and excellent endurance. Consider the smaller Xiaomi Watch S4 41mm if the 47mm case is too large. Choose a Garmin, Samsung, Apple Watch, or another more capable model if serious training, deep apps, LTE, or seamless platform integration matters more than battery life and appearance.

At its best, the Watch S4 feels like a more expensive watch: the circular case is attractive, the AMOLED screen is excellent, and charging is far less frequent than with most Apple, Google, or Samsung watches. At its weakest, it is a companion device rather than a full smartwatch. You still need your phone for Bluetooth calling, software depth is limited, and dual-frequency GNSS hardware does not automatically produce reliable route tracking.
That combination makes the S4 a strong lifestyle watch and only a cautious recommendation for runners.
Standard Watch S4 versus Watch S4 41mm
The title refers to the standard, larger Xiaomi Watch S4 reviewed by PhoneArena in March 2025. The 41mm model is a separate watch, not merely the same hardware in a smaller case.

The standard model is the better battery choice and has a more imposing traditional-watch presence. The 41mm version is lighter, slimmer, and potentially more formal, but its endurance is dramatically lower.
Design: the S4’s strongest argument
The circular case and conventional watch styling are what make the S4 appealing before its specifications enter the discussion. It looks appropriate with business clothing, does not resemble a miniature phone on the wrist, and offers a more distinctive design than many inexpensive rectangular smartwatches.
The standard model’s interchangeable bezel system is a genuine differentiator. You can change the watch’s physical outer ring rather than merely selecting a different digital watch face. That makes the S4 more adaptable for casual and formal use, although the mechanism is also more likely to appeal to enthusiasts than to buyers who never change accessories.
There are compromises. The 47mm case is relatively large and thick at 12mm, and its approximately 44.5g weight excludes the strap. Smaller wrists may find it bulky during sleep or exercise. The 41mm watch is a better fit in that situation, with a stainless-steel frame, a lighter 32g body, and strap options including leather, fluororubber, and Milanese styles.

The standard watch uses an aluminum-alloy frame, while the smaller model uses stainless steel. Both can look premium, but neither should be confused with a luxury mechanical watch in materials, finishing, or long-term scratch resistance. Treat the screen as exposed consumer electronics: Xiaomi’s specifications establish the display and water-resistance ratings, not immunity from scratches or impact.
The included strap is intended for everyday wear and exercise, but comfort depends on wrist size and sweat. Clean sweat from the strap and wrist after workouts, and loosen it slightly for normal daily wear. Stop wearing the watch if it causes persistent irritation; Xiaomi advises allowing the skin to rest and seeking medical advice when appropriate.

The 1.43-inch AMOLED panel is one of the standard S4’s best components. AMOLED pixels can switch off for deep blacks, producing strong contrast and an immediately premium appearance. The 466 × 466 resolution keeps text and watch-face details sharp, while the 60Hz refresh rate makes scrolling and transitions feel smooth enough for everyday use.
Xiaomi quotes up to 1,500 nits in high-brightness mode. That is a maximum HBM specification, not a promise that the entire screen will remain at 1,500 nits continuously in every situation. In practice, the panel should be well suited to outdoor viewing, although direct sunlight, automatic brightness behavior, and the particular watch face still affect legibility.
Touch interaction is supported by a rotating crown and the usual watch controls. Watch-face variety and customization help reinforce the traditional-watch concept, while the always-on display makes the watch feel more like a conventional timepiece. The cost is battery life, particularly when AOD is combined with frequent workouts and continuous health monitoring.
Battery life: excellent, but not 15 days for everyone
The standard S4 has a 486mAh battery, and Xiaomi rates it for up to 15 days of typical use. That figure is useful as a low-intensity endurance claim, not as a guaranteed ownership result.

A lighter pattern—notifications, intermittent heart-rate monitoring, limited workouts, and no or limited always-on display—gets much closer to Xiaomi’s headline. Normal use with daily notifications, sleep tracking, several workouts, and regular sensor activity will be lower. Heavy use can include AOD, continuous heart-rate and SpO2 monitoring, frequent GPS workouts, Bluetooth calls, and music playback; those features can consume battery quickly.
PhoneArena reported roughly five days with continuous heart-rate monitoring, AOD, sleep and SpO2 tracking, and two to three hours of daily fitness activity. TechAdvisor reported that particularly demanding configurations involving GPS, continuous blood-oxygen monitoring, and AOD could reduce endurance to approximately two or three days. The difference reflects usage and test conditions, not necessarily a contradiction.
The proprietary two-pin magnetic dock is compact and easy enough to use at home, but alignment can be mildly frustrating and it is another charger to pack when travelling. PhoneArena recorded a full charge taking slightly more than an hour. A short top-up should be useful for a day’s lighter use, but there is no standard Qi-style charging flexibility.

If battery life is disappointing
- Disable the always-on display temporarily.
- Reduce continuous heart-rate, SpO2, or stress sampling.
- Check whether frequent Bluetooth calls or local music playback is responsible.
- Update and reboot the watch and Mi Fitness app.
- Compare endurance during a controlled 24-hour period before deciding that the battery is faulty.
Menu names can vary with firmware and region, so look for the equivalent display, health-monitoring, and battery settings on your watch.

The S4 provides heart-rate monitoring, blood-oxygen monitoring, sleep tracking, stress monitoring, breathing exercises, cycle-related features, a combined health-check function, a compass, a barometer, and more than 150 workout modes. The 41mm version also lists temperature sensing.
That is a broad wellness package, and independent reviews were generally positive about heart-rate tracking for the price. PhoneArena found the standard S4’s heart-rate results broadly impressive, while Wareable described heart-rate performance on the 41mm as surprisingly reliable.
Sleep tracking is less definitive. Basic sleep duration and broad trends may be useful, and TechAdvisor found broadly similar sleep-duration and sleep-score results to an Oura Ring 4. However, reviewers reported differences in sleep-stage estimates and mixed results from deeper sleep analysis. Treat stages, stress scores, readiness-style conclusions, SpO2 readings, and temperature readings as informational rather than diagnostic. They are not a substitute for medical equipment or professional advice.
GPS: the serious weakness
The S4 supports GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou, and QZSS. Xiaomi’s manual documents dual-frequency positioning bands, so the hardware is designed with higher-precision GNSS capability in mind.

Wareable’s testing of the 41mm found inconsistent GPS, including difficulty acquiring a signal and performance below expectations. PhoneArena presented dual-frequency GNSS as a major feature, and other coverage has been more positive. The fairest conclusion is therefore not that every standard S4 has unusable GPS, but that buyers should not assume the specification guarantees Garmin- or Apple-level route data.
The S4 is reasonable for occasional walks, gym sessions, and casual runs when the exact route or pace is unimportant. It is a risky choice for serious running, cycling, trail work, navigation, or training plans built around accurate pace and distance. Test it against your phone or another trusted sports watch on the same route before relying on it.
If the watch will not acquire a signal, start outdoors with a clear view of the sky, wait for the positioning indicator before moving, synchronize Mi Fitness, and repeat the test on the same route. Tall buildings, trees, an indoor start, stale assisted-location data, firmware differences, or a hardware fault can all affect a single recording.

The S4 handles the everyday utilities many buyers actually use: notifications, alarms, calendar information, weather, timers, a compass, flashlight functions, find-phone tools, remote camera control, Bluetooth calling, music playback, and Xiaomi smart-home integration. It also has onboard music storage; PhoneArena reported approximately 2.2GB of user-accessible space, enough for roughly 200 MP3 tracks by its estimate.

Bluetooth calling requires the phone to remain connected. It is not LTE, and it does not provide independent phone-free communications. Xiaomi also says third-party-app voice calls are not supported, so compatibility with ordinary phone calls should not be mistaken for universal call handling.
The deeper limitation is software breadth. The S4 is not a Wear OS or watchOS device, and its app ecosystem is correspondingly narrower. It can provide the essential companion functions without offering the same range of third-party apps, messaging flexibility, platform services, or phone independence found on a Samsung Galaxy Watch, Google Pixel Watch, or Apple Watch.
It officially supports Android 8.0 or later and iOS 14 or later through Xiaomi’s global specifications. Android users should generally expect more flexibility within Xiaomi’s ecosystem. iPhone compatibility does not mean Apple Watch-level integration: notification interaction, message replies, background syncing, and other features can differ by operating system. Buy it as a cross-platform accessory, not as an Apple Watch substitute.
NFC payments are a regional question
Xiaomi lists NFC on the standard and 41mm specifications pages, but availability varies by region. Payments also depend on the relevant Xiaomi service, participating banks or card issuers, local regulations, the exact regional edition, and account setup.
Before buying for contactless payments, verify:
- Whether Xiaomi Pay or the relevant payment service operates in your country.
- Whether your bank and card are supported.
- Whether the exact regional watch edition includes the service.
- Whether the required Mi Fitness account and phone configuration work locally.
If payments are a deciding feature, do not treat the presence of an NFC specification as equivalent to Google Wallet or Apple Pay support.
Swimming and water resistance
Both models carry a 5ATM water-resistance rating. Xiaomi describes that as suitable for pools, shallow-water swimming, and similar shallow activities. It is not a diving certification.
Avoid hot showers, saunas, diving, and high-speed water impacts. Heat, chemicals, physical damage, and normal seal deterioration can compromise water resistance over time. “Waterproof” is not an appropriate description.
Which Xiaomi Watch S4 should you buy?
Choose the standard Watch S4 when:
- You want the longest possible battery life.
- You prefer a large, traditional-looking watch.
- Interchangeable bezels matter to you.
- You mainly need notifications, health trends, calls, music, and casual workouts.
- You are comfortable checking NFC compatibility in your country.
Choose the Watch S4 41mm when:
- The 47mm model looks or feels too large.
- You want a lighter, slimmer, more formal watch.
- You prefer a stainless-steel case and broader strap styling.
- You accept up to eight days of light use, four days of normal use, and three days of heavy use rather than the standard model’s much longer rating.
Check the Watch S3 first
The older Xiaomi Watch S3 deserves a price check before you buy. PhoneArena identified it as an important value comparison because it can offer similar core functionality at a lower sale price. If the S3 is substantially cheaper and you do not specifically want the S4’s bezel system or newer software features, it may be the better bargain. Compare current local pricing rather than launch prices.
How it compares with alternatives
- Huawei Watch GT: A similar style-and-endurance proposition. App and payment availability can be just as important a limitation, so check local support.
- Samsung Galaxy Watch: Better Android apps and smartwatch depth, but generally less compelling battery life and weaker cross-platform flexibility.
- Google Pixel Watch: A stronger Google ecosystem option for compatible Android users, but not a rival for the S4’s endurance.
- Apple Watch SE: The natural iPhone choice for apps, notifications, and integration. It is a poor match for Android users or buyers who dislike frequent charging.
- Garmin: The better direction for serious runners, cyclists, outdoor athletes, training metrics, and GPS reliability, though generally less fashion-focused.
- Amazfit: A credible budget competitor for battery life and sports features. The choice depends on the specific model, software experience, and whether Xiaomi’s bezel design appeals to you.
Final recommendation
The Xiaomi Watch S4 is good value when “smartwatch” means a handsome watch that delivers notifications, calls through your phone, everyday health information, casual exercise tracking, music, and long battery life. Its bright AMOLED display and interchangeable bezels make it more distinctive than many budget rivals.
It is not the right purchase if your priority is accurate training GPS, navigation, LTE independence, extensive apps, advanced fitness analysis, or guaranteed contactless payments. For most buyers, the decision is simple: buy the standard S4 for style and endurance, choose the 41mm for a smaller wrist, check the discounted Watch S3 before paying full price, and spend more on Garmin, Samsung, Google, or Apple when their ecosystem or fitness strengths matter more.
Check Xiaomi’s current regional specifications before buying, especially for NFC services, warranty coverage, software features, and local pricing.
