A separate, circa-2017 ceramic edition is easy to confuse with it, so year, material and dial design matter when identifying a listing.
What is the Zenith El Primero Rolling Stones watch?
It is a limited-edition El Primero Chronomaster made in collaboration with The Rolling Stones. Hodinkee’s June 2014 coverage identifies the watch as a 42 mm open-heart Chronomaster with the band’s tongue-and-lips logo at 6 o’clock and reports production of 250 pieces. Hodinkee’s 2014 report and WatchPro’s contemporaneous coverage both give the 250-piece limit.
Christie’s catalogue records an individual 2014 stainless-steel example with a 42 mm case, white dial bearing The Rolling Stones logo, automatic movement and chronograph function. How to distinguish the 2014 watch from the later edition
Another Rolling Stones El Primero is catalogued as circa 2017. It is a 45 mm black ceramic skeletonized model, with chronograph and date functions, also limited to 250 pieces. The tongue-and-lips logo is the most immediately recognizable clue for the 2014 design, but it is not enough by itself to distinguish editions. Check the case material, diameter, dial construction and year against the specific watch and its documentation.
What to verify in a listing
The available sources establish a few identifying features, not a complete technical specification or a live-market guide. Before treating a listing as the 2014 edition, compare the actual watch with the seller’s description and request documentation for that particular example.

- Case and dial: Look for the 2014 description’s stainless-steel, 42 mm open-heart format and Rolling Stones logo. Do not accept a 45 mm black ceramic skeleton watch as the same edition.
- Functions: Christie’s documents automatic movement and chronograph function for its 2014 example. Confirm the functions on the actual watch rather than assuming every listing has been described accurately.
- Condition and history: Review condition, service history and provenance, and ask what box and papers are included. The limited production count does not establish an individual watch’s condition or history.
- Strap: Confirm whether the strap shown is included. A strap appearing in one auction catalogue does not establish universal fit or support a replacement recommendation.
