A butterfly haircut pairs short, soft layers around the face with longer layers through the rest of the hair, so you can add movement without giving up much length. The 15 looks below are variations in length, fringe, texture and styling—not an official set of named cuts. Choose a shape that works with your hair’s density and natural pattern, then bring reference photos to your stylist.
What is a butterfly haircut?
It is a layered shape rather than one standardized haircut: shorter pieces frame the face, while longer layers preserve length and create movement. British Vogue describes the feathered layers as combed inward to add texture. Its 2026 coverage also discusses the butterfly bob, a shorter adaptation that brings the same light, face-framing effect to a bob silhouette. British Vogue’s explanation of the butterfly bob quotes NiM Salon co-founder Natalia Infantes describing the cut as long layers whose face-framing shape evokes butterfly wings.

British Vogue reported 300 percent year-over-year growth in Google searches for the butterfly bob and nearly two million TikTok mentions in 2026. The article does not give a measurement date or cite primary platform data, so treat those as figures reported by the magazine, not independently verified platform statistics. ELLE also described the butterfly bob as a spring/summer 2026 trend; these are editorial trend assessments, not proof that every variation below is trending. ELLE’s 2026 butterfly bob coverage
15 butterfly haircut variations to consider
-
Classic long butterfly layers
Keep most of the back length and add shorter, airy pieces around the face. This is the clearest choice if you want movement without a major length change.

Butterfly bob
Adapt the face-framing layers to a bob, with the overall length around the jaw or collarbone. The result is shorter than the classic long version but still has softness and movement.
-
Above-the-shoulder butterfly shape
For a shorter silhouette, place the longest pieces above the shoulders and retain light, graduated layers at the front. Ask your stylist to show how the layers will sit when your hair is at its natural texture.
-
Collarbone butterfly cut
A mid-length option that ends near the collarbone, with shorter front pieces to create a layered outline. It offers a middle ground between a bob and long layers.

Butterfly cut for straight hair
Soft, blended layers can make movement more visible in straight hair. Keep the ends substantial if you prefer a fuller-looking outline.
-
Butterfly cut for wavy hair
Use layers to support the natural wave rather than forcing a uniform, polished finish. The stylist can tailor the front pieces to how your waves fall and expand.
-
Butterfly cut for curls
Layer placement should account for curl pattern and shrinkage, since curls can spring up shorter after cutting or styling. Discuss whether the stylist will cut dry or make dry adjustments.

Fine-hair version with a fuller perimeter
Keep the layer pattern soft and the ends fuller to avoid making fine strands look sparse. A restrained face frame may give movement without relying on many short layers.
-
Butterfly cut with curtain fringe
Pair the face-framing layers with a soft curtain fringe that parts around the face. The fringe and the shortest layers should work together rather than compete for the same space.
-
Butterfly cut with side-swept fringe
A side-swept fringe adds a directional front shape without a full curtain fringe. Ask your stylist to account for your hairline and natural growth pattern.

Cheekbone-contoured layers
Begin the shorter face frame near the cheekbones to draw attention upward. L’Oréal suggests this placement for rounder features, but face-shape guidance is a styling option, not a guarantee of what will suit you. L’Oréal Paris’s butterfly haircut guide

Chin- or jaw-length face frame
Longer front layers beginning around the chin or jaw create a softer outline than cheekbone-starting layers. L’Oréal’s stylist guidance suggests this approach for angular heart or diamond-shaped faces; bring photos and decide based on your own features and preferred styling.
-
Feathered butterfly bob with a relaxed bend
Style a bob-length butterfly shape with a loose bend and a little lift at the crown for a soft, airy finish. The cut itself does not require a blowout, but styling can make its layers more visible.
How to choose a version that suits your hair
Start with the length you want to keep
Tell your stylist exactly where the longest layer should end. A butterfly cut can preserve long back length, sit at the collarbone, or become a bob; the name alone does not specify the result. Bring photos that show both the front layers and the overall length.
Match the layers to density and texture
- Fine hair: Ask for a softer layer pattern and fuller ends; too many short or heavily razored layers can make strands look sparse.
- Thick hair: Ask whether internal layering can reduce bulk without changing the perimeter you want to keep.
- Curly hair: Discuss curl shrinkage, curl pattern and whether dry cutting or dry adjustments are appropriate for the shape.
- Straight or wavy hair: Consider how much styling you are willing to do. Fine, straight hair may need more help from styling to show bounce and volume.
Use face-shape tips as options, not rules
Stylist and editorial guidance commonly suggests cheekbone-starting layers for rounder features, longer layers near the chin for angular heart or diamond shapes, and curtain or side-swept fringe to balance a longer face. These are not guarantees or formal rules. Hairline growth, texture and personal preference also affect how a fringe behaves; ELLE’s stylist guidance emphasizes tailoring contouring around the cheekbone or jaw and accounting for natural growth patterns. What to ask your stylist
Terminology can vary, so make the desired shape clear with reference photos. One useful description comes from Jake Wanstall, a hairstylist at Larry King, quoted by British Vogue on June 26, 2026: “Focusing on framing the face, short layers are cut in at the front, and they get longer towards the back.” British Vogue’s butterfly-cut explanation
- Show front and full-length reference photos, including an example of the amount of length you want to retain.
- Say where you want the shortest face-framing layer to begin: cheekbone, chin or jaw.
- Be specific about curtain fringe, side-swept fringe or no fringe.
- If your hair is fine, ask for a softer layer pattern and fuller ends; if it is thick, ask whether internal layers could remove bulk while preserving the outline.
- If your hair is curly, discuss shrinkage and whether the stylist will cut dry or make dry adjustments.
How to style butterfly layers
Styling is optional, but directing the shorter pieces can make the layered shape easier to see. Use a heat protectant before hot tools, and choose methods that suit your texture and tolerance for heat.
- For a blowout: Use a round brush to direct the shorter pieces and create lift or a soft bend.
- For shaped ends: A large-barrel curling iron or wand can add a loose curve to longer layers.
- For crown lift: Velcro rollers at the crown are another option.
- For curls or textured hair: Consider a lightweight smoothing or curl-defining cream rather than a routine that weighs hair down.
These are technique-related tool options, not product recommendations or a guarantee of a particular result.
How often does a butterfly haircut need a trim?
Trim intervals depend on the length and which parts of the cut you want to keep crisp. ELLE quotes stylist Greg Hill recommending trims every six to eight weeks for a jaw-length butterfly bob and every eight to ten weeks at collarbone length. Those are stylist recommendations for those bob lengths, not a universal schedule for longer butterfly cuts. British Vogue’s Jake Wanstall advises refreshing the fringe and front shaping as needed, since excessive grow-out can make the shape look heavy.
