It is the safest way to erase the watch, create a current backup attempt, and remove Activation Lock before a sale, gift, or trade-in. If the iPhone is unavailable, you can erase the watch directly; if the watch is lost or inaccessible, use Find My—but those alternatives do not automatically complete the ownership transfer.
There are three ways to erase an Apple Watch, but they are not equivalent. If you still have the paired iPhone—especially if you are selling, giving away, or trading in the watch—use the Apple Watch app on that iPhone. It erases the watch, creates a current backup attempt, and removes Activation Lock when you enter the Apple Account password.
Erasing the watch from its own Settings app or remotely through Find My protects your data, but erasing alone does not necessarily remove Activation Lock. That distinction determines whether another person can activate the watch.
Choose the right method

1. Unpair and erase the Apple Watch using the paired iPhone
This is the safest and most complete method when the iPhone currently paired with the watch is available. It is the method to use before selling, giving away, trading in, or recycling the watch.

- Keep the Apple Watch and its paired iPhone close together.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then tap All Watches.
- Tap the information button next to the watch.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch, then confirm.
- If the watch is a cellular model, choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan.
- Enter the Apple Account password when prompted to disable Activation Lock, then finish the unpairing process.
Unpairing erases the watch and restores it to factory settings. During the process, the iPhone attempts to create a current Apple Watch backup, which can be used when setting up another Apple Watch. Apple’s detailed procedure is in its official unpair and erase instructions.
Which cellular-plan option should you choose?
- Keep the plan if you are keeping the watch and intend to pair it again with the same or a replacement iPhone.
- Remove the plan when someone else will receive the watch.
Removing the plan from the watch may not cancel the carrier subscription. If you are cancelling cellular service rather than transferring it, contact the carrier separately.
2. Erase the Apple Watch directly from the watch
Use this method when the paired iPhone is unavailable but you can still operate the watch. It is also suitable for resetting a watch that you plan to keep.
- Open Settings on the Apple Watch.
- Tap General, then Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the watch passcode if prompted.
- On a cellular model, choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan.
- Tap Erase All to confirm.
This deletes the watch’s content and settings and returns it to factory settings. However, it does not remove Activation Lock. The Apple Account associated with the watch is still required before it can be activated or paired with another iPhone.
Therefore, do not rely on this method alone before handing the watch to another person. If you already erased it this way, you still need to remove it from the associated Apple Account using the appropriate Find My account-removal process. Apple specifically recommends unpairing through the paired iPhone when selling or giving away the watch.

3. Erase a missing or inaccessible Apple Watch remotely
Remote erasure is for a watch that is lost, stolen, no longer nearby, or already given away without being properly erased. It is a security measure—not the preferred way to prepare a watch for a new owner.
From the Find My app
- Open Find My on an iPhone or another Apple device.
- Tap Devices.
- Select the Apple Watch.
- Choose Erase and follow the confirmation prompts.
From Find My on the web
- Sign in to Find My on iCloud.com.
- Select the Apple Watch.
- Choose Erase Apple Watch.
- Continue through the confirmation prompts.
Apple’s lost Apple Watch guidance also documents a final removal step in the web workflow when a watch has already been given away. Use that account-removal step if the watch was transferred before you completed the erase and ownership-removal process.
Do not erase a merely misplaced watch too soon
If you think the watch is nearby, use Find My to check its location, play a sound, or turn on Lost Mode before erasing it. After a remote erase, Find My can no longer locate the watch, play a sound, or track it. Find My can only act if the watch had a connection to Wi-Fi, cellular service, or its paired iPhone before it went missing.
Forgot the Apple Watch passcode? Reset it from the charger
A forgotten passcode requires a reset; it cannot be bypassed through an ordinary Settings change. Apple’s current procedure is:
- Put the Apple Watch on its charger.
- Hold the side button until the power controls appear.
- Press and hold the Digital Crown until the erase screen appears.
- Tap Reset, then confirm.
If the paired iPhone is available, Apple says a backup of the watch’s contents is created on that iPhone before the reset. The reset erases the watch but does not remove Activation Lock, so the original Apple Account and password remain necessary for activation.

You may need an Apple Watch magnetic charging cable that is compatible with your particular watch model and generation. Charging accessories are not universally interchangeable, so check compatibility before buying or using one.

Activation Lock: the step people most often miss
Activation Lock is connected to the Apple Account associated with the paired iPhone. It is designed to prevent someone else from reactivating a lost or stolen watch.
Erasing content is not the same as removing Activation Lock. A direct erase from the watch, a forgotten-passcode reset, or a remote erase can leave the watch linked to the original account. The proper iPhone unpairing process removes the lock after you authenticate, while an owner who no longer has the watch must complete the account-removal process through Find My.
If you are buying a used Apple Watch, the previous owner should erase and unpair it before handing it over. A watch showing the previous owner’s passcode screen or Home screen has not been properly prepared. If setup asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account password, the watch is still linked to that account; the previous owner must remove the link.

Back up before erasing
Apple Watch data is backed up automatically to the paired iPhone when the devices are near each other. An Apple Watch backup can include app settings, watch-face customizations, Health data, Fitness data, and other watch information. Data that already synchronizes to iCloud—for example, Messages—is not part of the Apple Watch backup.

Unpairing through the iPhone attempts a current backup before erasing the watch. If preserving your setup matters, place the watch near the paired iPhone and allow the devices to connect before starting. Apple explains what an Apple Watch backup contains in its backup documentation.
What to do in common situations
You are selling, trading in, or giving away the watch
Keep the watch beside its paired iPhone and use Method 1. Remove the cellular plan if another person will use the watch, enter your Apple Account password, and wait for the watch to return to its factory-setup screen. Do not stop after erasing it from Settings.
You are keeping the watch but want a clean start
You can erase it directly from Settings if the iPhone is unavailable. If the iPhone is available and you want the best chance of retaining a current backup, unpair it through the Apple Watch app and pair it again afterward.
You have the watch but not its paired iPhone
Erase it from the watch using Method 2. If another person will receive it, separately remove Activation Lock from the associated Apple Account before considering the transfer complete.

The watch is lost or stolen
Use Find My to locate it, play a sound, or enable Lost Mode if recovery is still possible. If protecting the data is more important than continued tracking, erase it remotely. Remember that erasure ends Find My location, sound, and tracking features.
You already gave it away without unpairing
Use Find My on iCloud.com, select the watch, and follow the erase and removal workflow documented by Apple. The new owner cannot complete setup while the watch remains tied to your Apple Account.
Final pre-transfer checklist
- Back up the watch by keeping it near the paired iPhone.
- Use Apple Watch app > My Watch > All Watches > info button > Unpair Apple Watch whenever that iPhone is available.
- Enter the Apple Account password so Activation Lock is removed.
- Remove the cellular plan if another person will use the watch.
- Contact the carrier separately if the cellular subscription itself must be cancelled.
- Confirm that the watch displays the initial setup screen and does not request your Apple Account during the buyer’s setup.
