To stop Apple Watch from automatically starting Backtrack, open the Watch app on your paired iPhone and go to My Watch > Workout > Compass. Turn Backtrack off. This prevents automatic workout startup while keeping manual Backtrack available.
If Backtrack starts by itself when you begin an outdoor workout, turn off its workout auto-start setting in the Watch app on your paired iPhone:
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap Workout.
- Scroll to the Compass section.
- Turn Backtrack off.
This stops Apple Watch from automatically starting a Backtrack recording when it decides that a workout has begun in a remote location. It does not remove Backtrack or prevent you from starting it manually in the Compass app.
Why Apple Watch starts Backtrack automatically
Backtrack is a Compass feature that records the route you take and can later guide you back toward the place where recording began. Apple describes it as a feature for remote settings away from familiar places and densely populated areas with Wi-Fi.

Apple Watch does not publish a specific distance, GPS boundary, cellular threshold, or Wi-Fi radius that defines “remote.” As a result, Backtrack may activate in a place that does not feel like wilderness to you. In watchOS 26, Smart Stack suggestions can also recommend starting Backtrack when the watch detects a remote location without connectivity. That suggestion is separate from an active recording session.
What the Backtrack setting actually changes
The control at Watch app > My Watch > Workout > Compass > Backtrack controls automatic startup at the beginning of a workout. After you switch it off:
- Backtrack should no longer begin automatically through the workout setting.
- The Compass app remains installed and available.
- You can still start a Backtrack recording manually.
- Apple Watch Ultra can still start Backtrack from the Action button if Backtrack remains assigned to that button.
Disabling this option is not the same as turning off Compass, hiding every Compass-related screen, or disabling every possible way of starting Backtrack.
How to stop Backtrack if it is already running
If Backtrack has already started, changing the auto-start setting does not necessarily end the current session. Look for the Compass icon at the top of the watch face; Apple identifies that icon as an indication that Backtrack is running.
- Open the Compass app on Apple Watch.
- Use the active Backtrack control to stop recording or move to the route-retracing interface.
- If you no longer need the route, choose Delete Path.
When you want to use Backtrack intentionally, open Compass, tap the Backtrack button, and tap Record Path. To follow the recorded route later, choose Retrace Steps. Delete the path when you are finished with it.

If Compass keeps returning to the screen
There are two different problems that can look similar:
- Backtrack is recording: end the active session in Compass and delete the path if appropriate.
- Compass keeps coming to the foreground: review the watch’s Return to Clock behavior.
To change the second behavior on the watch, open:
Settings > General > Return to Clock > Compass
Choose the custom behavior and turn off Return to App for the relevant session state if that option is shown. This is a display-navigation setting, not the control that disables automatic Backtrack recording. Change the workout Backtrack setting first; use Return to Clock as a secondary fix if Compass keeps replacing your workout screen or watch face.
Apple Watch Ultra: check the Action button
On Apple Watch Ultra, Backtrack can be assigned to the physical Action button. If it is assigned there, an accidental press can start route recording even after you disable workout auto-start.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11To remove that shortcut:
- Open Settings on Apple Watch Ultra.
- Tap Action Button.
- Change the action from Backtrack to another available function, such as Workout, Waypoint, Flashlight, or Shortcut.
With Backtrack assigned, Apple documents pressing the Action button to start route recording. Pressing the Action and side buttons together toggles between recording and retracing. Therefore, an Ultra that starts Backtrack after a button press may be responding to its button assignment rather than the workout auto-start preference.
What if a Backtrack suggestion still appears in watchOS 26?
Turning off workout auto-start may not remove every Backtrack-related suggestion. watchOS 26 can show a Smart Stack hint recommending Backtrack when Apple Watch detects a remote location without connectivity.

A Smart Stack hint is not proof that route recording has started. Check Compass and the Compass icon on the watch face to determine whether a session is active. The available Apple documentation does not establish that the Smart Stack hint and the workout auto-start control are the same setting, so do not treat a remaining suggestion as evidence that the setting failed.
Will disabling Backtrack improve battery life?
It may reduce GPS route recording in situations where Backtrack would otherwise have started, but there is no quantified battery improvement established here. Apple does not provide a guaranteed battery-saving figure for this setting, and the result would depend on how often automatic recording would have occurred, the workout, connectivity, and other watch activity.
If an unexpected GPS session has left your watch low on charge, charging it is the practical remedy; a charging cable or dock does not change the Backtrack setting itself.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
| What you notice | What to do |
|---|---|
| Backtrack starts during an outdoor workout | Turn off Watch app > My Watch > Workout > Compass > Backtrack. |
| Backtrack is currently recording | Open Compass, stop or finish the session, and delete the path when appropriate. |
| A Compass icon appears at the top of the watch face | Compass identifies this as an indication that Backtrack is running; open Compass to manage the session. |
| Compass repeatedly replaces the workout screen or watch face | Review Settings > General > Return to Clock > Compass and disable Return to App for the relevant state if available. |
| Backtrack starts after pressing an Apple Watch Ultra button | Open Settings > Action Button and assign a function other than Backtrack. |
| A Backtrack recommendation still appears in Smart Stack | It may be a watchOS 26 suggestion rather than an active recording session. |
Compatibility and version note
Backtrack is documented for compatible Apple Watch models and watchOS versions, and Apple’s current product specifications list Backtrack GPS data among outdoor and workout capabilities on models including Apple Watch Series 10 and Apple Watch Ultra. Exact availability can vary by model and watchOS version. The setting names above are the relevant current labels; if a menu is missing, check that the paired iPhone and watch are running compatible software and that the feature is supported by your model.

For automatic starts during workouts, switch off Backtrack under Watch app > My Watch > Workout > Compass. If Compass is already active, end and delete the current path. If Compass appears after an Ultra button press, change the Action button assignment. If it merely keeps returning to the screen, adjust Return to Clock separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop Backtrack from automatically starting on Apple Watch?
Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone and go to My Watch > Workout. Scroll to Compass and turn Backtrack off. This disables automatic startup at the beginning of a workout, but manual Backtrack remains available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes turning off Backtrack remove the feature completely?
No. The setting disables automatic workout activation; it does not uninstall Compass or remove Backtrack. You can still open Compass, tap the Backtrack button, and choose Record Path manually.
Why does Backtrack still start on my Apple Watch Ultra?
On Apple Watch Ultra, open Settings > Action Button and assign a different function instead of Backtrack. An accidental Action button press can otherwise start route recording independently of the workout preference.
Why do I still see a Backtrack suggestion after turning it off?
A Smart Stack recommendation is different from an active Backtrack recording. In watchOS 26, Apple Watch may suggest Backtrack in a remote location without connectivity. Check Compass and the Compass icon on the watch face to confirm whether recording is actually active.
The Bottom Line
Turn off Watch app > My Watch > Workout > Compass > Backtrack. This disables automatic workout startup while preserving manual Backtrack use. For remaining problems, check the active Compass session, Return to Clock, and—on Apple Watch Ultra—the Action button assignment.
