A watch that resembles a famous design is not automatically a fake. The Sinn 903, Smiths Everest PRS-25, CWC 1980 Royal Navy Diver and Bulova Lunar Pilot are authentic models with distinct historical contexts—but that does not make every one an original vintage watch, prove every story beyond dispute, or settle any legal question about design.
What “legitimate” means here
In this context, “legitimate” means an authentic watch made under its named brand, or a later reissue tied to a documented model history. It is not a legal verdict about design rights. It also does not mean that a modern reissue is the same physical watch as a vintage or military-issued original.
The four examples differ in the kind of history behind them: a reported design relationship, a disputed mountaineering story, a military contract and a spaceflight connection. The evidence is stronger for some claims than others.
How the four watches compare
| Watch | Why it draws comparisons | Historical basis | What the current watch represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sinn 903 | Its slide-rule bezel and chronograph design resemble the Breitling Navitimer. | Time+Tide reports a 1970s arrangement between Helmut Sinn and Breitling. The retrieved Breitling history does not confirm that specific account. | A Sinn model associated with that reported relationship; do not treat the account as independently established by Breitling’s history page. |
| Smiths Everest PRS-25 | It is linked to the story of Edmund Hillary and the 1953 Everest ascent. | Time+Tide reports a Smiths advertisement quoting Hillary, but says the wording is vague and the identity of his watch remains disputed. | A later Smiths watch related to the Everest story, not a watch proven to have been on Hillary’s wrist. |
| CWC 1980 Royal Navy Diver | It is associated with the Rolex Milsub, which it reportedly replaced in Royal Navy service. | CWC says it won the Royal Navy diver-watch contract in 1980 and describes the model as the 1980 Royal Navy Diver Automatic. | CWC presents a modern Diver’s Reissue; that is distinct from an original issued watch. |
| Bulova Lunar Pilot | It recalls Bulova’s chronograph connection to Apollo 15 and the Moon. | Bulova says a Bulova chronograph was worn on the Moon during Apollo 15 on August 2, 1971. | The current Lunar Pilot is an updated or re-created model inspired by that watch, not the original flown timepiece. |
Sinn 903: the Navitimer resemblance and a reported connection
The Sinn 903 is the clearest example here of a watch whose familiar look is tied to a reported relationship between brands. Time+Tide says Helmut Sinn made a deal with Breitling in the 1970s that allowed Sinn to produce a chronograph using the Navitimer’s slide-rule bezel. That account explains the resemblance, but it should remain attributed to Time+Tide: the retrieved Breitling history discusses the late-1970s quartz crisis and Ernest Schneider’s 1979 takeover without confirming the specific arrangement.

- Waterproof: Water resistant up to 20 ATM / 200 meters / 655 feetWaterproof: Water resistant up to 20 ATM / 200 meters / 655 feet
- Luminous: Luminescent hands and hour markers, excellent night brightness
- Features: Japanese quartz movement, no need hand winding, unidirectional rotating bezel, premium 316L stainless steel, mineral crystal glass with protruding magnifying glass, screw-in crown, double safety buckle
- Size: 41 mm case diameter, 48 mm lugs to lugs length, 13 mm thickness, 20 mm lug width, 163g weight. Fits wrists up to 8.5 inches, great fit for a variety of wearing needs
- Usage Care: Keep 3+ inches from phones, speakers, microwaves – strong magnetic fields disrupt movement. Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures. Prevent hard impacts/vibrations
That distinction matters. A reported historical agreement is not the same thing as a confirmation from both companies, and resemblance alone does not establish whether a design was authorized or legally protected. The responsible conclusion is narrower: the 903 is a Sinn watch, and the explanation for its Navitimer-like bezel comes from Time+Tide’s account.
Smiths Everest PRS-25: a story with an unresolved wristwatch
The Smiths Everest PRS-25 draws on the story of Edmund Hillary’s 1953 Everest ascent. Time+Tide contrasts Smiths’ association with the climb against Rolex’s claim involving Oyster Perpetuals, and reports that a Smiths advertisement quoted Hillary: “I carried your watch to the summit. It worked perfectly.”

- Quartz Movement Advantages: More affordable and accurate than automatic watches, quartz movement requires no hand winding, suitable for those who do not wear their watch daily
The quote, as reported, does not identify a specific model. Time+Tide itself says the wording is vague and that the watch Hillary wore remains disputed. The PRS-25 is described as a later model connected to the Everest story; the available account does not prove it was the watch on Hillary’s wrist. Nor does it establish current official availability of the PRS-25.
CWC 1980 Royal Navy Diver: separate the issued watch from the reissue
CWC says it was established in 1972 to make military watches and won the Royal Navy diver-watch contract in 1980. Its history identifies the model as the 1980 Royal Navy Diver Automatic and says it replaced the Rolex Milsub. This makes the watch’s military context different from a later brand merely borrowing a visual style.

Bulova says one of its chronographs was worn on the Moon during Apollo 15 on August 2, 1971. The company describes the current Lunar Pilot as an updated or re-created watch inspired by that chronograph. Its spaceflight connection is real in the sense Bulova documents, but the current product should not be confused with the original watch worn during the mission.

What to check before buying
Historical connection and present-day product details answer different questions. If you are shopping, verify the exact reference and current listing rather than assuming that a model name guarantees a particular size, specification or availability.
Quick Recap
- Identify the watch: distinguish a current production model or reissue from an original vintage or issued watch.
- Check the reference: for the Lunar Pilot, confirm dimensions and features against the product page for your country and the exact reference.
- Verify availability: current listings for the Sinn 903, Smiths Everest PRS-25 and CWC reissue were not established here, so do not assume they are in stock.
- Read historical claims at the right level: treat the Sinn–Breitling arrangement and the specific Hillary-watch story as reported accounts, not settled facts.
