These five stories show why “made for a movie” does not always mean the same thing: Hamilton’s Tenet prop had a bespoke display, Breguet supplied a period-style pocket watch for Master and Commander, and the Interstellar Murph prop eventually inspired a retail model.
What makes a watch “specially made” for a movie?
A watch may be designed as a non-retail prop, adapted to a film’s technical requirements, reproduced to fit a historical setting, or selected and commissioned for a character. A later commercial watch can be inspired by a prop without being identical to it. The distinctions matter: not every on-screen watch keeps time, and not every film commission becomes a product.
| Film and watchmaker | What was made for the film | Retail connection |
|---|---|---|
| Tenet — Hamilton | A custom prop based on the Khaki Navy BeLOWZERO, with a film-specific digital display. | A separate BeLOWZERO special edition was inspired by the prop; it is not described as having the prop display. |
| End of Days — Audemars Piguet | A conceptual Royal Oak Offshore prop that, according to Time+Tide, did not keep time. | Time+Tide reports a later 500-piece limited edition. |
| Master and Commander — Breguet | A period-authentic pocket-watch prop, made to evoke a historical Breguet watch. | No retail counterpart is established in the account. |
| Kingsman — Bremont | Three watches commissioned for the original film, according to Time+Tide. | No named retail release or current availability is established in the account. |
| Interstellar — Hamilton | Two key character watches were created as props. | The Murph prop later inspired the Khaki Field Murph Auto, a collection model introduced in 2019 according to Time+Tide. |
Hamilton’s custom-built watch for Tenet
Hamilton worked with the film’s design team on a custom watch based on its Khaki Navy BeLOWZERO. Swatch Group says the requirements for Tenet called for features not available in a commercially available Hamilton watch. Development and testing took 18 months, and Hamilton produced dozens of final prop watches for filming. (Swatch Group, 2020)
On screen, the black military-style watch combines an analogue dial with an unusually bright digital display. The film prop’s mechanical movement was replaced by a digital one, and a powerful battery illuminated the dial. Those are details of the custom prop—not features established for the later retail edition.

Time+Tide describes the later edition as a steel Offshore coated in black PVD, with a black dial and bright yellow hands and indexes, and reports that 500 were made. That figure and the model details are attributed to Time+Tide; the account does not establish current availability or an official Audemars Piguet confirmation. (Time+Tide, December 9, 2020)
Breguet’s period-style pocket watch for Master and Commander
For the historical setting of Master and Commander, prop master Doug Harlocker sought a watch that would suit the period rather than a modern product placement. He contacted Breguet to duplicate a watch the company had made in the 1700s. Harlocker said the company took on the challenge and supplied a period-authentic pocket watch for the film. Harlocker described the request this way: “I contacted Breguet to duplicate a watch that they had made in the 1700s to use in the film.” The account identifies it as a film prop, not as a standard retail model. (Time+Tide, December 9, 2020)
Three Bremont commissions for the original Kingsman
Time+Tide reports that three Bremont watches were specially commissioned for Colin Firth and Taron Egerton in the original Kingsman film. Director Matthew Vaughn explained the choice in terms of British identity and the mix of practicality and gentlemanly style he wanted for the characters. This is a film-specific account; it should not be extended to later franchise films, which used other watch brands. (Time+Tide, December 9, 2020)

Time+Tide says Murph’s watch began as a prop, then inspired the Khaki Field Murph Auto, which Hamilton introduced as a permanent collection model in 2019. The retail watch is not the original prop. Its seconds hand carries “Eureka” in Morse code, a detail that connects the commercial model to the film’s story. (Time+Tide, December 9, 2020)
Crowley recalled: “When we made Interstellar, we invited Hamilton to create two key props, which of course are the watches for our two main characters.” Hamilton says its involvement in film began in 1951, though the publication date for that historical statement is not specified on the cited page. (Hamilton, “Hamilton Behind the Camera”)
How the five movie-watch stories differ
- Most technically bespoke: The Tenet prop was engineered around film requirements, including its illuminated digital display. The later retail special edition was inspired by it, not identified as the same watch.
- Prop followed by a limited commercial edition: Time+Tide describes the End of Days prop as non-timekeeping and reports a later 500-piece Royal Oak Offshore edition.
- Historical reproduction: Breguet’s Master and Commander contribution was a period-authentic pocket-watch prop, not evidence of a standard product placement.
- Film commission: The three Bremont watches were commissioned for the original Kingsman; the cited account does not establish a corresponding retail release.
- Prop that inspired an ongoing collection model: Murph’s Interstellar watch led to the Khaki Field Murph Auto, a separate retail watch.
These examples are historical accounts, not a current stock or price guide. The cited accounts do not establish present-day availability for the limited editions, commissioned watches, or film props.
