These five tourbillon watches stand out for different reasons: historical continuity, distinctive cage architecture, precise setting, celestial design, and a major Swiss maker’s current catalogue. This is an editorial shortlist, not a measured ranking: the selection prioritizes documented movement or setting features and meaningful design differences. Manufacturer claims are attributed to their sources; no independent accuracy comparison is available.
What is a tourbillon watch?
A tourbillon places the escapement and balance wheel inside a mobile cage that rotates. Breguet describes its principle this way: “The principle of the tourbillon consists in placing the escapement and the balance wheel in a mobile cage.” Abraham-Louis Breguet obtained the patent for the regulator on 26 June 1801, according to the maker. The original purpose was to distribute rate variations associated with vertical positions in pocket watches, which could remain in a fixed orientation.

That history explains the complication; it does not establish that a modern wristwatch tourbillon is more accurate in ordinary wear. The five examples below are selected for documented distinctions, not a claim that one is objectively the best.

1. Breguet Classique Tourbillon 7357: a classical reference point
The 7357 is the straightforward choice for a collector drawn to Breguet’s classical tourbillon lineage. Swatch Group identifies its Calibre 187B as hand-wound, running at 2.5 Hz (18,000 vibrations per hour) with a 60-hour power reserve. These are specifications for this reference, not general tourbillon benchmarks. Official group material describes platinum and Breguet-gold versions.
#1 Best Overall
- This tourbillon designed by Swiss designer Etienne Ruffieux with modern architectural aesthetics, features a lightweight, comfortable, free-sprung balance flying tourbillon. It houses an independently developed architectural tourbillon movement adorned with oversized ruby bearings. The design aesthetic is expressed through the interplay of light and shadow created by its extreme skeletonization. The watch has been honored with the IAI Global Design Award for its outstanding original design.
- Independently developed CAL9001 free-sprung balance flying tourbillon movement, manual winding, 28,880 vibrations per hour, 25 ruby bearings. Features high-end finishing including satin brushing and beveled edges, engraved brand logo with gold-stamped. Dual mainspring series technology delivers 80-hour power reserve (twice that of standard tourbillon movements). This technology ensures more uniform and gradual mainspring release, resulting in enhanced timekeeping precision and stability.
- The CAL9001 tourbillon movement features the exclusive free-sprung micro-adjustment technology typically reserved for luxury timepieces. This free-sprung system eliminates the need for a balance spring regulator, thereby overcoming the timing inaccuracies caused by regulator displacement in conventional mechanical movements. This ensures the watch delivers enhanced precision and stability in timekeeping.
- This tourbillon measures 40mm in diameter and just 9.7mm in thickness, weighing a mere 67 grams. Its meticulously engineered structure and radically skeletonized tourbillon movement eliminate all superfluous metal components, allowing the mechanical artistry of the free-sprung flying tourbillon to shine in its purest form. It is an exquisite, high-end tourbillon watch that is both ultra-thin and supremely comfortable.
- The watch is water-resistant to 50 meters, featuring a double-sided sapphire crystal and an Italian leather strap with hand-stitched detailing for comfortable and durable wear. We offer a three-year worldwide warranty.
Its appeal is continuity: the complication is presented within a classical collection rather than as a deliberately futuristic display. Check the exact reference and regional catalogue for the currently offered case and dial configuration.
2. Breguet Classique Tourbillon Sidéral 7255: a celestial, limited edition
The Sidéral 7255 takes a more atmospheric approach, pairing a platinum case with a black aventurine enamel dial. Swatch Group describes it as Breguet’s first wristwatch with a flying tourbillon. The model is stated to be limited to 50 pieces and to have a 50-hour power reserve.
Rank #2

Its design philosophy is expressed through the interplay of light and shadow created by extreme skeletonization. This timepiece has been honored with the European International Design Award for its outstanding original design.

- This tourbillon features a high-tech ceramic bezel. Ceramic resists discoloration and is harder than metal, protecting the watch from scratches. Weighing half as much as stainless steel, it reduces wrist strain for enhanced comfort.
- The watch is water-resistant to 50 meters. Featuring a double-sided sapphire crystal and an aerospace-grade fluororubber strap, it offers waterproof, sweat-resistant, and corrosion-resistant properties for comfortable and durable wear. Featuring Super-LumiNova Luminous hands and hour markers. We provide a 3-year worldwide warranty.
A flying tourbillon is supported from one side rather than being held by a bridge across the top, leaving the rotating cage more visually open. The 7255 is the shortlist’s clearest choice for a collector who values that open presentation and a specifically stated edition size. The 50-piece figure applies to this model; it should not be taken to mean tourbillons generally are limited editions.

The Tradition 7047 offers a more architectural visual language. 2026 coverage describes a platinum version with a Bleu de France dial and bridges, including the bridge for its fusee-and-chain system. That arrangement makes the movement’s construction a prominent part of the design and gives the watch a connection to the historical tradition of using a fusee and chain to even out the force delivered by a mainspring.

- Global warming accelerates glacial melting, causing severe ecological damage to Earth. Inspired by “Never-Melting Ice,” Agelocer's Swiss Chief Designer Etienne Ruffieux grand launch this full sapphire case free-sprung balance flying tourbillon watch, urging awareness of climate change. Honored with the 2022 German Design Award for its exceptional design, this tourbillon is globally limited to 100 pieces.
- The entire watch case is crafted from 5N (99.999%) high-purity sapphire crystal; 5N-grade sapphire crystal boasts a Mohs 9 hardness rating (second only to diamond) and exceptional transparency. Its superior hardness renders the case scratch and wear resistant, ensuring a flawless, long-lasting finish that stands the test of time. High transparency enables us to clearly appreciate the mechanical artistry of the ultimate skeletonized flying tourbillon.

4. A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Tourbillon: a setting function, not just a spectacle
The 1815 Tourbillon distinguishes itself through its setting mechanism. Lange says that pulling the crown stops the seconds and returns the hand to zero through its ZERO-RESET system. This allows the seconds hand to be aligned precisely with a minute marker and supports setting to the second.

What to check before choosing one
- Architecture: A flying cage is visually more open; a conventional supported cage has a different construction and appearance. Do not assume a flying design is inherently more accurate.
- Setting: Lange’s stop-seconds and ZERO-RESET directly address alignment when setting the time. Decide whether that function matters to you more than a purely visual complication.
- Complication mix: This shortlist focuses on tourbillon distinctions. Other combinations exist, including Lange’s Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar and Breguet’s Marine Tourbillon Équation Marchante 5887, but their additional functions are not needed to rank these five.
- Edition status: Only the 7255’s 50-piece limit is established for the five selected models here. A tourbillon alone does not prove that a watch is a limited edition or quantify its market rarity.
- Fit and ownership: Confirm the exact case dimensions, material, water resistance, service options, price, and stock for the reference and region you are considering. A complete, current comparison of those details is not established by the cited model information.
- Accuracy claims: Manufacturer specifications and functions are useful for identifying differences, but they do not substitute for independent testing under comparable conditions. No broad accuracy advantage is established here.
