6 Key Differences Between the New Omega Seamaster 300 and the Previous Generation

The 2021 Omega Seamaster 300 keeps the 41 mm case but brings a sandwich dial, vintage-style details, an aluminum bezel, a thinner profile, a redesigned bracelet, and a METAS-certified Calibre 8912.

The 2021 Omega Seamaster 300 is a substantial redesign, not a larger watch. It keeps the previous generation’s 41 mm case diameter but adds a two-layer sandwich dial, a more historically styled handset and numerals, a fully luminous aluminum bezel, a thinner case, a redesigned bracelet, and Omega’s METAS-certified Calibre 8912 movement.

This comparison covers the vintage-inspired Seamaster 300, including the blue steel reference 234.30.41.21.03.001. It does not cover the larger, more contemporary Omega Seamaster Diver 300M, which is a separate collection.

At a glance: new Seamaster 300 vs. previous generation

Feature 2021 Seamaster 300 Previous generation
Case diameter 41 mm 41 mm
Dial Two-layer sandwich construction; cleaner wording Conventional dial with recessed or applied markers and more text
Dial opening Approximately 30.4 mm Approximately 29.5 mm
Seconds hand Lollipop style Earlier, more contemporary design
Bezel Oxalic-anodized aluminum; fully luminous scale Ceramic insert with Liquidmetal numerals
Thickness Approximately 13.85 mm Approximately 15 mm
Movement Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8912; about 60 hours’ power reserve Calibre 8400
Water resistance 300 m 300 m

The result is a watch that looks more vintage, wears more easily for many people, and has a materially more advanced movement. However, not every change is a technical upgrade: the new aluminum bezel is more period-correct and more luminous, while the older ceramic-and-Liquidmetal bezel is the more modern choice for scratch resistance.

1. The flat dial became a two-layer sandwich dial

The most obvious change is the construction of the dial. The 2021 Seamaster 300 uses a sandwich dial: a luminous lower plate sits beneath a darker upper plate, which is cut out around the hour markers and numerals. Those openings reveal the luminous layer underneath and give the dial noticeably more depth.

The previous generation used a more conventional dial with recessed or applied markers. It already had vintage references in its design, but its markers and typography looked more like a modern interpretation. The new construction is closer in spirit to early Seamaster 300 watches and makes the dial appear more dimensional when viewed in person or under changing light.

Omega also moved the movement and certification wording from the dial to the caseback. The dial is therefore less crowded: it retains the Omega logo and the historical Seamaster 300 wording rather than prominently displaying the previous generation’s “Master Co-Axial Chronometer” text.

2. The dial opening grew, even though the case stayed 41 mm

Both generations have a nominal 41 mm case diameter. The newer watch did not become a 42 mm or 43 mm model. Instead, Omega increased the visible dial opening from approximately 29.5 mm to 30.4 mm.

That modest numerical change has a significant visual effect. With more dial surface visible inside the bezel, the 2021 model looks more open and less dense. The hands, large numerals, and luminous markers have more visual space around them. In photographs, this can make the new watch appear substantially larger than the outgoing model even though the cases share the same stated diameter.

This is an important distinction when comparing wrist shots or trying to judge fit from images. The apparent size difference comes primarily from the dial-to-bezel balance and revised case proportions, not from an increase in case diameter.

3. The dial furniture became more historically styled

Omega revised nearly every prominent piece of dial furniture on the 2021 watch.

  • Lollipop seconds hand: The new seconds hand uses a circular luminous detail associated with vintage Seamaster 300 references and the later Spectre limited edition.
  • Open Arabic numerals: The numerals at 3, 6, 9, and 12 are more open in style and contribute to the watch’s historical character.
  • Cleaner inscription: Removing the movement-certification wording leaves a less commercial-looking dial.
  • Revised lume colors: The hour markers, numerals, and most hands glow blue. The minute hand and the bezel’s zero marker glow green.

The previous model blended vintage cues with more contemporary typography and dial text. The new one makes a more deliberate effort to resemble a modern historical re-creation. The difference is especially clear when the two watches are placed side by side: the new model’s lollipop hand, open numerals, and restrained text give it a more cohesive period-inspired identity.

4. The ceramic-and-Liquidmetal bezel became an aluminum bezel

This is the most important change to assess as a trade-off rather than a simple improvement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The outgoing steel Seamaster 300 used a ceramic bezel insert with Liquidmetal diving-scale numerals. The 2021 model switches to an oxalic-anodized aluminum insert, available in black or blue to match the dial. The entire diving scale is luminous on the newer watch.

Aluminum supports the new model’s vintage brief. It gives the bezel a more period-correct appearance and helps create a coordinated, slightly aged color palette between the insert, dial, and lume. The fully luminous scale also makes the bezel easier to read in low light than a bezel whose markings are only partially luminous.

The cost is modern material performance. Ceramic is generally more resistant to scratches than aluminum. Omega’s anodizing process produces an aluminum insert harder than ordinary anodized aluminum, but it remains a different material strategy from ceramic. A buyer who values historical appearance and bezel lume may prefer the 2021 model; a buyer who prioritizes resistance to everyday scuffs may prefer the previous generation’s ceramic insert.

5. The case became thinner and the bracelet more wearable

The 2021 case measures approximately 13.85 mm thick, compared with roughly 15 mm for the outgoing model. That reduction is notable because the newer watch uses a more pronounced domed sapphire crystal. The slimmer case helps reduce the top-heavy sensation associated with the previous generation and gives the watch a more refined vintage profile.

  • Water, Sweat & UV Resistant: Fully resistant to water, sweat, salt, and harmful UV exposure, making it the ultimate companion for diving, swimming, working out, and all outdoor adventures. Designed for an active lifestyle that doesn’t compromise on style.

The bracelet was redesigned alongside the case:

  • It tapers from approximately 20 mm at the lugs to 16 mm at the clasp.
  • The balance of brushed and polished surfaces is reversed compared with the earlier bracelet.
  • The clasp includes multiple positions for comfort adjustment.
  • The end-link geometry allows the bracelet to wrap around the wrist more quickly instead of projecting as rigidly from the case.

These changes matter more in daily wear than the diameter specification alone. A 41 mm watch with a shorter-feeling, more flexible bracelet can wear more compactly than a watch with the same diameter and a broader, less accommodating bracelet.

The new model also has an exhibition sapphire caseback, showing the upgraded movement. That display back is part of the appeal of the 2021 watch, but it means the practical improvement should not be interpreted as every dimension becoming smaller. The case is thinner overall, while the movement and display-back arrangement still contribute to the watch’s profile.

Bracelet or strap?

The current 41 mm Seamaster 300 uses a 21 mm lug width and is available in both bracelet and strap configurations. That makes an alternate strap a practical ownership option rather than an arbitrary accessory. For example, a 21 mm leather strap for the Seamaster 300 can shift the watch toward a more vintage or less formal look.

Before ordering, verify the exact reference, lug width, spring-bar dimensions, buckle compatibility, and whether the strap is shaped to work with the Seamaster 300’s end-link and case geometry. “21 mm” alone does not guarantee a perfect fit, particularly if you want to reuse the original Omega buckle or deployant clasp.

6. Calibre 8400 was replaced by METAS-certified Calibre 8912

The movement is the most consequential functional difference. The previous generation used Omega Calibre 8400. The 2021 Seamaster 300 uses the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8912, with approximately 60 hours of power reserve and certification through the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology, or METAS.

Master Chronometer certification evaluates the complete watch and movement against demanding standards for precision, performance, and resistance to magnetic fields. The new movement therefore brings Omega’s newer certification and movement architecture to the Seamaster 300 rather than merely changing the decoration or winding system.

  • Easy Installation & Reliable Service: Comes with installation tool and spring bars for quick replacement. We offer professional after-sales support and 100% satisfaction guarantee.

The movement change also explains two visible editorial decisions:

  • The certification wording no longer needs to dominate the dial because it can be presented on the caseback.
  • The exhibition sapphire back gives owners a view of the upgraded calibre.

The new watch retains the broad mechanical character expected of an automatic Seamaster 300, but the 8912 gives it a more current technical specification. For buyers choosing between otherwise similar examples, this is the change most likely to matter after the novelty of the dial wears off.

What did not change?

The redesign is extensive, but the 2021 Seamaster 300 remains recognizably the same family of watch. Both generations offer:

  • A vintage-inspired Omega Seamaster 300 design
  • A 41 mm case diameter
  • An automatic mechanical movement
  • A unidirectional elapsed-time diving bezel
  • A sapphire crystal
  • 300 m water resistance
  • Black and blue steel variants
  • The choice of bracelet or strap, depending on configuration

In other words, this is not a move from a classic diver to the more modern Seamaster Diver 300M. It is a major update to the same vintage-inspired product line.

Which Omega Seamaster 300 should you buy?

Choose the 2021 model if you want:

  • A cleaner, less crowded dial
  • A more obvious vintage connection
  • Sandwich-dial depth and open Arabic numerals
  • A lollipop seconds hand
  • A fully luminous bezel scale
  • A thinner case and more tapered bracelet
  • Modern METAS Master Chronometer certification
  • An exhibition caseback

Choose the previous generation if you prefer:

  • The ceramic bezel’s greater scratch resistance
  • Liquidmetal bezel numerals
  • The older dial typography and more contemporary visual balance
  • A less explicitly historical interpretation of the Seamaster 300
  • The particular condition, price, or availability of a pre-owned example

The aluminum bezel is the key point of tension. If you see a watch primarily as a modern tool, the older ceramic insert may be the more satisfying choice. If you value the warmth, lume, and historical character of the 2021 design, the aluminum insert is part of what makes it compelling.

How to compare references before buying

The blue steel reference 234.30.41.21.03.001 is a useful reference point for the current-market 2021 design. However, do not assume that every Seamaster 300 variant has identical specifications. Bronze Gold, titanium, platinum, and limited-edition models can differ in case material, dial treatment, hands, bezel, bracelet or strap, and movement details.

When comparing a current or pre-owned watch, check the complete reference number and confirm:

  1. Whether it is the 2021-generation Seamaster 300 rather than the Seamaster Diver 300M.
  2. The case material and exact bezel construction.
  3. Whether the watch is supplied on its original bracelet, strap, or clasp.
  4. The movement calibre listed for that reference.
  5. The condition of the bezel insert, crystal, bracelet, and clasp.
  6. Whether the seller can document service history, provenance, and warranty coverage.

Prices are deliberately not included here. They vary by country, reference, retailer, condition, and date, and historical launch pricing should not be treated as current pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the new Omega Seamaster 300 larger than the old one?

No. Both generations have a nominal 41 mm case diameter. The 2021 model has a larger dial opening—approximately 30.4 mm versus 29.5 mm—which makes it look more open and sometimes larger on the wrist.

Is the 2021 Seamaster 300 the same as the Seamaster Diver 300M?

No. They are separate Omega collections. This comparison covers the vintage-inspired Seamaster 300, not the larger and more contemporary Seamaster Diver 300M.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the new aluminum bezel better than the old ceramic bezel?

Neither is universally better. The new oxalic-anodized aluminum bezel is more historically styled and has a fully luminous scale, while the previous ceramic bezel with Liquidmetal numerals is generally the more scratch-resistant and technically modern option.

What movement does the new Omega Seamaster 300 use?

The 2021 model uses Omega Calibre 8912, a Co-Axial Master Chronometer movement with approximately 60 hours of power reserve and METAS certification.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The 2021 Omega Seamaster 300 is a meaningful redesign that keeps the 41 mm format while improving the dial depth, historical styling, case thickness, bracelet ergonomics, and movement certification. The previous generation remains attractive if you prefer its ceramic/Liquidmetal bezel and more contemporary dial. The right choice depends less on case size than on whether you value modern scratch resistance or the newer model’s vintage character and wearability.
