The lineup combines new hardware with watchOS 26 software, so the most important features are not available on every model.
Here are the six upgrades that matter most—and what they mean for existing Apple Watch owners, first-time buyers, fitness users, and outdoor enthusiasts.
At a glance: what launched in 2025?
The Apple Watch Series 11 is the mainstream premium model, starting at $399 in the U.S. at launch. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the rugged outdoor flagship, starting at $799. The Apple Watch SE 3 is the lower-cost model.
Some features below are exclusive to Series 11 or Ultra 3, while others arrive through watchOS 26 and also work on older compatible watches.

1. Hypertension notifications
Series 11 and Ultra 3 introduced notifications that look for patterns associated with chronic high blood pressure. Apple does not describe this as on-demand blood-pressure monitoring: the watch does not provide traditional systolic and diastolic readings like a cuff.
If the feature detects a pattern that may suggest hypertension, it can alert the wearer to seek medical evaluation. It is a screening aid, not a diagnosis, and it should not replace a validated blood-pressure cuff or advice from a clinician.
Apple’s stated intended-use limitations include people under 22, people already diagnosed with hypertension, and pregnant users. Availability also depends on regulatory clearance and region. Check Apple’s support documentation for current eligibility and availability.
Best reason to care: It could encourage people with an otherwise unnoticed pattern to check their blood pressure. Important caveat: do not treat the notification as a medical measurement.

Sleep Score is not a Series 11-only feature. It is part of watchOS 26 and is available on Apple Watch Series 6 and later, Apple Watch SE 2 and later, and all Apple Watch Ultra models, paired with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later.
The score summarizes sleep-related factors such as duration, bedtime consistency, and interruptions. It should be considered alongside sleep stages and sleep-apnea notifications—not confused with a diagnosis of a sleep disorder. Apple’s health feature guidance explains the relevant limitations.

- A FULL-FEATURED HEALTH TRACKER—Apple Watch Series 11 gives you invaluable insights about your body, right from your wrist. Take an ECG anytime* and get alerts for a high and low heart rate or an irregular rhythm*—so you can stay closer to your heart. You can also view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app* and be notified of possible sleep apnea.*

The practical trade-off is overnight charging. To use Sleep Score, you need to wear the watch while sleeping and leave enough battery for the following day. The new models’ longer runtimes make that easier, but compatible older watches also receive the software feature.
3. 5G cellular connectivity
Series 11 and Ultra 3 added 5G cellular capabilities. Apple says this can improve throughput for downloads such as music, podcasts, and apps, while helping the watch remain useful when your iPhone is not nearby.
That independence applies only to cellular models with a supported carrier plan. A GPS-only Apple Watch does not gain cellular connectivity through a software update. Coverage, speed, and availability vary by carrier, location, signal strength, and country; consult Apple’s cellular availability page before buying.
For runners, commuters, and parents, cellular can make leaving the iPhone behind more practical. If your watch is almost always near your phone, the recurring service cost may not be worthwhile.
4. Two-way satellite communication on Ultra 3
The standout Ultra 3 feature is two-way satellite communication. In suitable conditions, the watch can support Emergency SOS, Messages, and Find My location sharing when cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable.
That makes Ultra 3 particularly relevant to hikers, campers, trail runners, skiers, and other users who regularly travel beyond reliable coverage. It is not satellite internet and does not provide unrestricted texting everywhere.

- GREAT BATTERY LIFE AND FASTER CHARGING—Enjoy a smartwatch with all-day, 18-hour battery life* from sunup to sundown. Then charge up to twice as fast as SE 2* and get up to 8 hours of battery in just 15 minutes.*
Apple includes Emergency SOS, Find My, and Messages via satellite for two years after Ultra 3 activation. Find My and Messages require a carrier plan. For SMS over satellite, the paired iPhone must be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or an active cellular network, although it does not need to be nearby. SMS charges may apply. Connection and response times can vary with terrain, vegetation, buildings, and weather.
See Apple’s satellite communication guidance for current regional and service limitations.
5. Longer battery life and faster charging
Apple’s stated estimates are the following:
| Model | Standard use | Low Power Mode | 15-minute charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Series 11 | Up to 24 hours | Up to 38 hours | Up to 8 hours |
| SE 3 | Up to 18 hours | Up to 32 hours | Fast charging supported |
| Ultra 3 | Up to 42 hours | Up to 72 hours | Up to 12 hours |
These are controlled, Apple-supplied estimates—not guarantees of everyday runtime. Cellular use, workouts, GPS, signal strength, settings, temperature, and app activity can all reduce battery life. The longer runtimes are especially useful for sleep tracking, multi-hour workouts, travel, and time away from a charger.
For existing owners, battery health and charging convenience may be more noticeable than raw performance. The Ultra 3 is the clear endurance choice; Series 11 narrows the gap with the standard models while remaining smaller and lighter.
Apple explains its testing methodology and current figures in its Apple Watch comparison.
6. Tougher or larger displays, depending on the model
Series 11: improved scratch resistance
Aluminum Series 11 models use Ion-X glass with a ceramic coating. Apple claims it is twice as scratch-resistant as the Ion-X glass used on aluminum Series 10 models. Titanium Series 11 models use sapphire crystal.

- GET SMARTER HEALTH INSIGHTS—Apple Watch SE 3 is an advanced health tracker that helps you better understand your body. The smartwatch sends alerts for an irregular heart rhythm, or an unusually high or low heart rate.* You can view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app,* track your sleep score, and get sleep apnea notifications.*
- A GREAT FITNESS TRACKER—SE 3 can track your workouts in a healthy number of ways—from running and strength training to simply achieving your 10K steps a day. With real-time metrics and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone,* you’ll hit your goals like never before.
- KEEP HELP CLOSE AT HAND—SE 3 is a smartwatch that can detect a hard fall or severe car crash and automatically help connect you to emergency services and notify your emergency contacts.* Check In can automatically notify a loved one when you’ve arrived at your destination.
- WOMEN’S HEALTH INSIGHTS—SE 3 has advanced sensors that track your wrist temperature while you sleep. With this smartwatch, you can log your periods and symptoms, get period predictions, and get notified of cycle deviations.*
- GREAT BATTERY LIFE AND FASTER CHARGING—Enjoy a smartwatch with all-day, 18-hour battery life* from sunup to sundown. Then charge up to twice as fast as SE 2* and get up to 8 hours of battery in just 15 minutes.*
This is a durability improvement, not a promise that the screen cannot be scratched or damaged.
Ultra 3: the largest Apple Watch display
Ultra 3 has Apple’s largest Apple Watch display. Its LTPO3 wide-angle OLED design reduces display borders by 24% without changing the case size, and Apple says it improves readability from wider viewing angles.
The always-on display can refresh once per second rather than once per minute, allowing a continuously ticking seconds hand on supported watch faces. That is a small but useful change for timing activities at a glance.
SE 3: improved crack resistance
Apple says the SE 3’s Ion-X glass is four times more crack-resistant than the SE 2’s glass. That is a different claim from Series 11’s scratch-resistance comparison, so the two figures should not be treated as equivalent durability tests.

The 2025 lineup also brought several software features, though they are not all exclusive to the new watches:
- Workout Buddy: an Apple Intelligence-powered workout companion that can provide motivational feedback. Availability depends on the paired iPhone, language, region, and software support.
- Wrist flick: a gesture for dismissing notifications and interacting with the watch.
- New watch faces: additional personalization options.
- Offline Maps: available on compatible watches running watchOS 26.
- Live Translation in Messages: available on supported models with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, subject to language and regional limitations.
Apple Intelligence features should not be understood as entirely independent processing on the watch. Some require a compatible iPhone, and availability can vary.

Which 2025 Apple Watch is right for you?
Choose Series 11 if you want the best mainstream upgrade
Series 11 is the balanced choice for buyers who want hypertension notifications where supported, improved battery life, 5G cellular, and a more scratch-resistant aluminum display without the size and price of Ultra 3. It is less compelling as an upgrade if you already own a recent model and mainly want Sleep Score, since that arrives on older compatible watches through watchOS 26.
Choose Ultra 3 for outdoor safety and endurance
Ultra 3 is the model to consider if satellite communication, the longest battery life, a larger display, titanium construction, or diving support matters. It supports water resistance to 100 meters and recreational scuba diving to 40 meters with a compatible third-party app. Oceanic+ requires a subscription.
It is also substantially more expensive and larger than the standard models. Satellite services have activation, carrier, iPhone, regional, and environmental limitations, so do not buy Ultra 3 solely for ordinary sleep or health tracking.
Choose SE 3 for value
SE 3 is aimed at first-time buyers, families, and budget-conscious users. It supports Sleep Score, sleep-apnea notifications, temperature sensing, and core fitness features, but it does not offer every health sensor in Series 11. Apple’s comparison page lists ECG as unavailable on SE models, and SE 3 is not the choice for hypertension notifications or Ultra 3 satellite features.

What is genuinely new for existing owners?
The upgrade is strongest when you need a specific hardware capability:
- Outdoor users: Ultra 3’s satellite communication and 42-hour stated battery life are the clearest reasons to upgrade.
- Standard-model owners: Series 11’s battery, 5G, durability, and hypertension notifications may matter, depending on region and medical eligibility.
- Sleep-focused users: install watchOS 26 first if your current watch is compatible; Sleep Score alone may not justify new hardware.
- First-time buyers: SE 3 covers many everyday needs at a lower tier, while Series 11 adds more health and connectivity capabilities.
All three models require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later when used with the current software generation. Water resistance can diminish over time, and no Apple Watch should be described as permanently waterproof. Check Apple’s water-resistance guidance for care and activity limits.
