Yes—the September 2024 headline was a genuine report, and its central prediction was correct. Apple did not announce an Apple Watch SE 3 in 2024. The company announced the third-generation model on September 9, 2025, with retail availability beginning September 19, 2025.
What the 2024 headline actually meant
“Apple Watch SE 3 reportedly won’t launch before 2025” meant that Apple was not expected to release the budget watch during 2024. It did not promise an early-2025 launch or provide a specific release date.
The report appeared after Apple’s September 2024 event introduced the Apple Watch Series 10 without an SE 3. That omission did not prove cancellation, but it made a 2024 launch unlikely. Contemporary reporting also cited analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s forecast that the Apple Watch SE 3 would arrive in 2025.
Why a 2024 launch had seemed plausible
The first two Apple Watch SE generations arrived in September 2020 and September 2022. That two-year pattern made a 2024 refresh a reasonable expectation, although Apple has never guaranteed a biennial SE release. Earlier reporting had already discussed uncertainty around the next update.

Mark Gurman’s reporting, as summarized by Tom’s Guide, said development was continuing and that the watch could arrive in 2025. Reports also described Apple considering a lower-cost plastic case, with possible cost and quality challenges. Those details were rumors, not confirmed explanations for the timing.
What evidence supported the prediction?
- Event omission: Apple announced the Series 10 in September 2024 but not an SE 3.
- Gurman’s report: Development was reportedly continuing, but a 2025 arrival was possible.
- Kuo’s forecast: The supply-chain analyst predicted an SE 3 launch in 2025.
- Plastic-case speculation: Separate reports suggested Apple was exploring plastic construction and encountering manufacturing complications.
The evidence supported a delayed or later launch, not a confirmed product schedule. In particular, it is not accurate to say that Apple definitely delayed the watch because of plastic manufacturing problems. The reports attributed possible cost or quality issues to the proposed design, but Apple did not publicly identify those as the cause of the delay.
The prediction was broadly correct
Apple announced the Apple Watch SE 3 on September 9, 2025, opened preorders the same day, and began retail availability on September 19, 2025. Its U.S. launch price started at $249. Apple’s announcement confirms those dates and pricing.

That means the 2024 forecast got the important point right: there was no SE 3 in 2024, and the model arrived in 2025. It did not, however, predict the exact announcement date, availability date, final price, or final design.
What Apple confirmed at launch
Apple listed several substantial changes for the SE 3, including:
- S10 chip
- Always-On display
- Fast charging
- Optional 5G cellular connectivity
- Sleep Score
- Wrist-temperature sensing
- Retrospective ovulation estimates
- Sleep-apnea notifications
- Double Tap and wrist-flick gestures
- On-device Siri
- More crack-resistant cover glass
For dimensions, materials, battery information, configurations, and compatibility details, use Apple’s official technical specifications. The pre-launch plastic reports should remain separate from these confirmed specifications unless Apple’s final documentation explicitly supports a particular material claim.

Should you have waited?
If you were shopping in September 2024
Waiting was sensible if you did not urgently need an Apple Watch. The SE 2 was already aging, and credible reporting pointed to a 2025 successor. Buyers who needed a watch immediately could still reasonably choose the SE 2, particularly at a substantial discount, but they were accepting older hardware and a shorter expected software-support horizon.
If you are shopping now
The decision is no longer whether to wait for an SE 3. It is whether the established SE 3 offers enough for your needs.
- Choose the SE 3 if you want the least expensive current Apple Watch experience for notifications, workouts, safety features, and core health tracking.
- Consider a standard Apple Watch if you want a broader sensor package, premium display or materials, or additional health capabilities and are willing to pay more. See Apple’s current buying page for the available lineup.
- Choose an Apple Watch Ultra if rugged construction, outdoor use, endurance activities, and battery life matter more than compact size or price. Apple’s Ultra product page covers that range.
- Consider refurbished or used models only when the discount is meaningful and the seller provides a return period, battery-health information, and a warranty. Confirm iPhone and watchOS compatibility before buying.
The $249 figure is the SE 3’s U.S. launch MSRP from September 2025, not a guaranteed current price. Retail, carrier, and refurbished pricing can change.

Important compatibility and ownership details
Apple says the SE 3 works with watchOS 26 and requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26. Software compatibility does not guarantee feature parity: some functions can depend on hardware, region, language, paired iPhone, or cellular configuration.
Cellular connectivity is useful for runners, children, older adults, and anyone who regularly leaves an iPhone behind. It also requires a compatible carrier and usually an additional recurring service charge. If your iPhone is nearly always with you, the GPS model may be the more economical choice. Apple lists cellular information at apple.com/watch/cellular.
What remains uncertain
Current reporting does not expect a new Apple Watch SE model in 2026, but that is not an Apple-confirmed cancellation or long-term schedule. Apple has also not established a fixed SE refresh cycle. The gap between the 2020, 2022, and 2025 generations shows why a two-year pattern should be treated as context rather than a promise.
The resolved historical answer is straightforward: the September 2024 report was legitimate, the wording meant “not in 2024,” and the prediction was broadly accurate. Apple Watch SE 3 is now a released product, not an outstanding rumor.
