If your Apple Watch will not send an iMessage on watchOS 11.5, start by tapping the failed message and retrying it. Then check Airplane Mode, the watch’s connection, iMessage account settings, and the paired iPhone. The final remedies are resetting the iMessage session, restarting both devices, updating compatible software, and—only if necessary—unpairing and pairing the watch again.
If your Apple Watch shows a red exclamation point, “Not Delivered,” or simply refuses to send an iMessage on watchOS 11.5, work through these fixes in order. Start with the failed message and connection checks; leave signing out of iMessage, software updates, and unpairing until the less disruptive steps have failed.
Important version note: watchOS 11.5 was released on May 12, 2025. Apple’s security-release listings now show a later watchOS release, 26.5, as the latest version as of the research date. If your watch and iPhone support a newer compatible update, do not limit your troubleshooting to watchOS 11.5.
1. Tap the red exclamation point and retry
Open the Messages conversation on your Apple Watch and look for the red exclamation point or “Not Delivered” status beside the message.

- Tap the red exclamation point or failed message.
- Choose the retry option.
- Wait briefly for the message to send before trying another fix.
This is the least disruptive test. A temporary connection interruption or failed handoff between the watch and iPhone can resolve with a single retry. If the message fails again, continue to the connection checks below.
2. Turn off Airplane Mode and check Do Not Disturb
On the watch, press the side button to open Control Center. Check whether Airplane Mode or Do Not Disturb is highlighted.
- Tap Airplane Mode to turn it off if it is enabled.
- Tap the active Do Not Disturb or Focus control to disable it temporarily.
Airplane Mode can prevent the watch from using an available connection. Do Not Disturb is different: it primarily controls alerts and notifications, so it can make a successfully received message look like it never arrived. It is not, by itself, proof that iMessage transmission is blocked. After changing the controls, send a short test message.
3. Verify the Apple Watch has a usable connection
An Apple Watch can send and receive iMessages through a paired iPhone, Wi-Fi, or cellular service. For iMessage, the iPhone does not necessarily need to be nearby or powered on if the watch has its own Wi-Fi or cellular connection.

SMS and MMS work differently. On a cellular Apple Watch, the paired iPhone must be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular service, although it does not need to be nearby. This distinction matters because people often call every message an “iMessage,” even when a conversation has switched to SMS, MMS, or RCS.

Test the available connection paths
- Press the side button to open Control Center and inspect the connection indicators.
- Bring the Apple Watch and paired iPhone close together and try sending again. This tests the nearby-device connection.
- If that fails, connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi and test again.
- For a cellular watch with an active plan, test with the iPhone farther away, provided cellular service is available.
If the watch and iPhone appear disconnected or will not pair, fix that connection before troubleshooting iMessage settings. A watch with no usable network path cannot send a message regardless of which account settings are correct.
4. Send a message from the paired iPhone
Open Messages on the iPhone paired with the watch and send a test message in the same conversation or to another contact.
- If the iPhone also cannot send or receive messages: the watch is probably not the only problem. Check the iPhone’s network connection and troubleshoot Messages there first.
- If the iPhone works but the watch fails: continue with the watch account and session checks.
Use the bubble color as a clue, not as a repair:
- Blue: usually iMessage.
- Green: may be SMS, MMS, or RCS, depending on the conversation and devices involved.
A green bubble does not mean changing a setting will automatically make the Apple Watch work. It tells you that a different messaging service, carrier requirement, or recipient-device condition may be involved.

5. Confirm iMessage, Apple Account, and Send & Receive settings
On the paired iPhone, check the iMessage account path carefully:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Messages.
- Make sure iMessage is turned on.
- Tap Send & Receive.
- Confirm that the intended phone number and/or email address is selected.
Then verify the Apple Account used by the watch:
- Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then General.
- Open Apple Account and check that the watch is signed in to the expected account.
The phone number and email selections matter. If Messages is configured to use an email address instead of the phone number, a message may arrive on one Apple device but not another. Make sure the address or number you expect to use is selected under Send & Receive, then test the watch again.

6. Reset the iMessage sign-in session
If the connection works and the account settings look correct, reset iMessage’s account session on the iPhone. This is a targeted registration reset; it does not erase the Apple Watch or its data.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive.
- Sign out of the Apple Account shown for iMessage.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Messages and turn iMessage off.
- Turn iMessage back on.
- When prompted, choose Use your Apple Account for iMessage and sign in again.
Before signing out, confirm that you know the Apple Account password and can complete any verification prompts. After signing in again, allow the service time to activate, then retry Messages on the iPhone and watch. Do not repeatedly toggle the setting if activation is still in progress.
7. Restart both the Apple Watch and iPhone
Apple specifically recommends restarting both devices for Apple Watch messaging problems. A normal restart is preferable:
Restart the Apple Watch
- Remove the watch from its charger.
- Press and hold the side button until the power options appear.
- Tap the power button and drag the power-off slider.
- After the watch turns off, press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
Restart the iPhone
Power the paired iPhone off using its normal power control, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again. Once both devices have restarted, keep them near each other and test Messages.
If the watch is frozen and cannot restart normally, use a force restart only as a fallback: hold the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds, releasing them when the Apple logo appears. The watch cannot be restarted while it is charging, so remove it from the charger first.

8. Update both devices, then unpair and pair again
Install available updates
Check for updates on both the iPhone and Apple Watch. To update the watch from the iPhone:

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Open the Watch app.
- Tap My Watch > General > Software Update.
- Install the compatible update offered for your devices.
Apple’s update requirements include:
- The watch should be at least 50 percent charged.
- The iPhone should be connected to Wi-Fi.
- The Apple Watch should remain on its charger while the update completes.
If your existing charger is unreliable or unavailable, an Apple Watch magnetic charging cable can provide the charging setup required for this step. It may solve a charging prerequisite, but it will not repair an Apple Account, network, carrier, or iMessage activation problem.
Because watchOS 11.5 is no longer the newest release, check the current compatible version rather than searching specifically for 11.5. Compatibility depends on the Apple Watch model and paired iPhone, so install only the update offered for your hardware.
Use unpairing as the final software remedy
If the watch still cannot send iMessages after the account reset, restarts, and updates, unpair it and pair it again. This is more disruptive than the preceding fixes, which is why it belongs last.
From the iPhone’s Watch app, open My Watch, tap All Watches, open the information button beside the watch, and choose Unpair Apple Watch. Follow the prompts to complete the process and pair the watch again.

Unpairing creates an Apple Watch backup on the iPhone. If you use a cellular model, the process may offer an option to keep the cellular plan; read that prompt carefully before confirming. After pairing again, allow Messages and account services to finish syncing before testing.
When to contact Apple or your carrier
If iMessage still fails after the account reset, restart, current compatible software update, and re-pairing, the cause may involve Apple Account activation, a carrier or network service, or an Apple-side or device-specific issue.
Contact Apple Support if the iPhone can send iMessages but the watch cannot, particularly after re-pairing. If the failure is limited to SMS or MMS on a cellular watch, contact your carrier as well, because those messages depend on the paired iPhone being powered on and connected and may involve cellular-account provisioning.
Avoid random “iMessage repair” apps, configuration profiles, and third-party cleaners. They are not necessary for this Apple Watch troubleshooting sequence and can introduce additional account or configuration problems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Check the watch’s connection, the Apple Account in the Watch app, and the phone number or email selected under Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive. If those are correct, reset the iMessage sign-in session and restart both devices.
Why can my iPhone send iMessages but my Apple Watch cannot?
Yes. iMessage can work through Wi-Fi or cellular service on the watch, even when the iPhone is not nearby or powered on. SMS and MMS are different: a cellular watch requires the paired iPhone to be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular service.
Can an Apple Watch send iMessage without the iPhone nearby?
Usually, Do Not Disturb affects alerts and notifications rather than proving that iMessage transmission is blocked. Disable it temporarily while testing so you can distinguish a sending failure from a message that arrived without an alert.
Will Do Not Disturb stop iMessages from sending on Apple Watch?
Only after retrying the message, checking connections and account settings, resetting iMessage, restarting both devices, and installing compatible updates. Unpairing is more disruptive, although the iPhone creates an Apple Watch backup during the process.
Should I unpair my Apple Watch to fix iMessage?
The Bottom Line
Most Apple Watch iMessage failures on watchOS 11.5 come down to a temporary failed message, unavailable connection, incorrect Send & Receive identity, or an iMessage activation session that needs resetting. Retry first, verify the connection and account, restart both devices, update compatible software, and reserve unpairing for the end. If the problem survives all eight steps, Apple Support—and the carrier for SMS/MMS-specific failures—is the appropriate next escalation.
