If your Apple Watch is stuck on “Preparing,” “Verifying,” “Installing,” an Apple logo, or a pairing screen, do not force-restart it immediately. A watchOS update can take several minutes to an hour. Keep the watch on its charger, leave the iPhone nearby on Wi‑Fi, keep the Apple Watch app open, and avoid restarting either device while the update is visibly progressing.
If there has been no change for an extended period, or the process repeatedly fails, work through these nine fixes in order. The first seven are non-destructive; resetting or erasing the watch comes later because it can require setting it up again.

First, identify what is actually stuck
“Stuck while pairing” can describe several different problems. A progress wheel usually means an update is still being prepared or installed. “Cannot Install Update” often points to storage or a damaged download. An Apple logo that remains indefinitely requires a different recovery procedure, while an iPhone-and-watch animation or red exclamation point indicates Apple’s recovery state.

A motionless screen alone does not prove that the update has failed. Apple says a watchOS update may take several minutes to an hour and that the watch should restart automatically when it finishes. Apple does not provide a precise point at which interrupting an update becomes safe, so use the screen state and repeated failures—not an arbitrary timer—as your guide.

1. Wait while the update is genuinely working
If the watch still shows an update screen or progress wheel, leave it alone while you confirm these conditions:
- The watch is seated correctly on its charger.
- The watch has at least 50% battery and remains charging.
- The iPhone and watch are close together.
- The iPhone remains connected to Wi‑Fi and the Apple Watch app stays open.
Do not quit the app, disconnect the charger, or restart either device merely because the progress indicator has not moved for a short time. See Apple’s watchOS update guidance for the supported update process.
2. Charge the watch and keep both devices together
Charging problems can look like pairing problems. Re-seat the watch on a functioning Apple-certified charger and check that the charging indicator appears. Keep it charging throughout the update rather than repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting it.

If the watch never appears to charge, or the cable, adapter, buttons, or screen are not working, the fault may be power- or hardware-related rather than a software update issue.
3. Update the iPhone and check compatibility
Apple recommends updating the iPhone before pairing an Apple Watch. On the iPhone, open Settings > General > Software Update, install any available update, restart if requested, and retry pairing in the Apple Watch app. Some iOS updates also require the watch to update before syncing can finish. Compatibility depends on the watch model, iPhone model, and software versions. For watchOS 26, Apple lists Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) or later, Apple Watch Series 6 or later, and Apple Watch Ultra or later. Installation requires an iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (3rd generation) or later, running iOS 26 or later. These are watchOS 26 requirements, not a universal rule for every release; check Apple’s current compatibility list if the version changes.
4. Repair the Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth conditions
For ordinary pairing, turn on Bluetooth, connect the iPhone to Wi‑Fi or cellular data, unlock the iPhone when prompted, and keep both devices nearby. Avoid weak or unstable networks.
For Apple’s specific recovery screen—the iPhone-and-watch animation or a red exclamation point—the iPhone must be unlocked, connected to Wi‑Fi, running iOS 15.4 or later, and have Bluetooth enabled. If recovery fails, Apple suggests trying a 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi network instead of 5 GHz. Avoid captive-portal networks in hotels, cafés, schools, and some offices, as well as 802.1X enterprise networks. The 2.4 GHz suggestion applies to this recovery procedure; it is not a blanket requirement for every watchOS update. Follow Apple’s recovery-network guidance.
5. Restart the Apple Watch and iPhone
If the update is no longer visibly progressing, perform a normal restart:
- Restart the Apple Watch using its normal shutdown and power-on controls.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Put the watch back on its charger and try the update again.
Use a force restart only if the watch is unresponsive or Apple’s documented recovery instructions call for it. Do not make a force restart your first response to an ordinary update that may still be installing.

6. Delete and redownload the watchOS update
If the update repeatedly will not start, fails verification, or returns to the same prompt, remove the downloaded package and download it again:

- Tap My Watch > General > Storage.
- Find the downloaded watchOS update.
- Delete the update file.
- Retry the update while the watch is charging.
This removes the update package from the update workflow; it does not erase the watch or delete personal data. The file must be downloaded again, so a reliable connection and adequate iPhone storage are important. Labels can vary slightly by iOS and watchOS version.
7. Free storage on the Apple Watch
An update can fail even when pairing itself is working if the watch does not have enough available storage. Do not rely on an invented minimum free-space figure: the requirement varies by release and device.
Clean up in this order:
- Remove synced music, podcasts, photos, and other downloaded media.
- Remove large or unused third-party apps.
- Restart the watch.
- Retry the update on its charger.
Apple’s guidance for “Unable to Verify Update” also recommends removing media and apps when necessary. See Apple’s update-verification troubleshooting.
8. Remove beta profiles and retry
If the iPhone or watch previously used beta software or a developer seed, a beta profile can interfere with installing the next public release. In the Apple Watch app, try My Watch > General > Profiles, select the relevant profile, and delete it. On the iPhone, check Settings > General > Profiles & Device Management and remove the relevant profile if it is present.

Restart both devices and check for the update again. Menu names and profile behavior vary across iOS versions, and not every beta enrollment uses the same profile screen. Do not install configuration profiles from unofficial websites.

If the watch is stuck on the Apple logo
For a black screen with a white Apple logo that remains indefinitely, Apple’s pairing-recovery procedure is:
- Press and hold the Digital Crown and side button at the same time until the watch restarts.
- Release both buttons.
- After the restart, firmly press the screen or press and hold the Digital Crown.
- Tap Reset.
- Bring the iPhone near the watch and pair it again.
Warning: Resetting the watch means you should expect to set it up again. Restore from an available backup when offered. Apple notes that changes made after the last backup may not return, and iCloud does not store Activity Sharing data.
If the watch shows an iPhone and a watch, or a red exclamation point
This is Apple’s recovery state, not an ordinary pairing animation. Put the watch on its charger, place an unlocked iPhone nearby, confirm Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth are enabled, and double-click the watch’s side button. Follow the instructions on the iPhone. If the red exclamation point persists, Apple says service may be required. Do not use third-party firmware-flashing or “one-click repair” tools. See Apple’s official recovery procedure.
If pairing is incomplete after moving to a new iPhone
Open the Apple Watch app and go to My Watch > All Watches. If you see Pairing Not Complete, put the watch on your wrist, unlock it, and tap Finish Pairing.

If the watch remains paired to an old iPhone that is unavailable, Apple’s process is to erase the watch, pair it with the new iPhone, and restore from the most recent backup if available. A watch face appearing during setup can also mean the watch is already paired and must be erased before pairing again.
When Activation Lock or a previous owner is involved
Erasing an Apple Watch does not bypass Activation Lock. If the watch belonged to someone else and asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account credentials, that owner must remove it from their account. A used watch may also still be paired with the former owner’s iPhone or may be running software too old for the new iPhone.
Cellular activation is not required to complete ordinary pairing. It can be completed during setup or later, and availability varies by country or region. For most setups, the iPhone and watch use the same carrier; Family Sharing setups are an exception. See Apple’s pairing guide.
What to do based on the screen you see

When to stop troubleshooting
Contact Apple Support or arrange Apple-certified service if the red exclamation point remains, the watch will not charge, recovery fails repeatedly after a reset and fresh download, the screen or buttons do not respond, or the watch has physical or liquid damage. Service options and prices vary by model, country, warranty, and AppleCare+ coverage; there is no universal repair price.
