Meta Acquires Limitless as It Expands Its AI Wearables Strategy

Meta acquired Limitless as part of its broader AI-wearables strategy. The deal could bring audio memory and contextual AI to future glasses, but no specific Meta product integration has been confirmed.

Meta acquired AI-wearable startup Limitless on December 5, 2025. The deal is best understood as a broader AI-wearables acquisition—not confirmation of a specific new Meta smart-glasses product. Limitless built the Pendant, a wearable microphone that recorded conversations and generated transcripts, summaries, reminders, and searchable personal memories.

That audio-memory expertise could complement Meta’s camera, voice, display, and augmented-reality glasses. However, Meta has not announced a Limitless-powered product, an AI pendant, or an integration with current Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta, or Meta Glasses products.

What Meta acquired

Limitless said on December 5, 2025, that it had been acquired by Meta. Reuters separately reported the transaction and described it as part of Meta’s expansion into consumer AI hardware and next-generation AI wearables.

Limitless was formerly associated with Rewind and later focused on the Pendant: a small wearable microphone designed to capture spoken conversations and thoughts, then use AI to produce transcripts, summaries, notes, reminders, and other contextual information. It connected to native iOS and Android applications and was designed for long-duration or continuous recording subject to the service’s controls and limits.

The public announcement did not disclose a purchase price, valuation, deal structure, or employee count. Meta also did not publish a detailed asset-by-asset explanation of the acquisition.

Limitless’s acquisition announcement said its vision of “personal superintelligence” and AI-enabled wearables aligned with Meta’s direction. Reuters reported that Limitless’s capabilities would support Meta’s next-generation AI-wearable efforts. That is broader than saying the company was acquired exclusively to develop smart glasses.

What the Pendant did

Before new sales ended, the Pendant was positioned as an always-available audio-memory device. It could be used for meetings, lectures, errands, personal reflections, and ordinary conversations. Its software could turn captured speech into:

  • Searchable transcripts
  • Summaries and notes
  • Reminders and follow-up items
  • AI-generated answers based on recorded context

The device had a visible white recording light that could not be disabled or dimmed. Limitless said the light existed to make recording apparent to people nearby.

Historical product requirements included iOS/iPadOS 18 or later and Android 13 or later. Published specifications listed IP54 splash and dust resistance, USB-C charging, and a limitation of one paired Pendant per device or account. The company warned users not to charge it with a USB-C Power Delivery charger.

Why Limitless could matter to Meta

Meta already has the hardware and distribution foundation for wearable AI. Its products include camera-equipped Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses, the display-equipped Meta Ray-Ban Display announced in September 2025, and the longer-term Orion augmented-reality prototype. Meta’s June 2026 Meta Glasses announcement also emphasized multimodal AI, translation, navigation, prescription compatibility, and hands-free assistance.

Limitless potentially adds a different layer: persistent personal context. Its experience could help Meta develop systems for:

  • Always-available or long-duration audio capture
  • Speech transcription and summarization
  • Personal memory and information retrieval
  • Context-aware voice assistants
  • Wearable-to-phone synchronization
  • Recording indicators and consent workflows

This creates a natural technical complement. Meta’s glasses provide cameras, microphones, speakers, displays, sensors, and a consumer platform; Limitless built software around remembering what a wearer heard and turning it into useful information.

That connection is an informed inference, not a confirmed product roadmap. There is no public evidence that Limitless technology is already inside Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta, Meta Glasses, or Meta Ray-Ban Display.

How the deal fits Meta’s glasses roadmap

Meta’s wearable strategy is increasingly divided into several overlapping categories:

  • Camera AI glasses: hands-free photography, audio, calls, voice commands, and Meta AI.
  • Display AI glasses: the Meta Ray-Ban Display adds an on-glasses display and works with the Meta Neural Band. Meta announced it with a starting price of $799.
  • AR glasses: products such as Orion represent Meta’s longer-term ambition for spatial computing and augmented reality.

Limitless is most obviously relevant to the first two categories because both depend on voice, audio, and AI assistance. It could also support future AR products by giving an assistant a longer-running record of what the wearer has heard, discussed, or requested.

Possible applications include automatic meeting notes, reminders based on spoken commitments, recall of earlier conversations, and answers that combine what the wearer sees with what they recently heard. None of these applications has been announced as a Limitless-derived Meta feature.

What changed for Limitless customers

The immediate effect of the acquisition was not a new Meta device. It was a major change to Limitless’s existing product and service:

  • Limitless stopped selling new Pendants on December 5, 2025.
  • Existing Pendant customers were told support would continue through 2026.
  • Continuing customers were moved to the Unlimited plan at no charge.
  • Non-Pendant functionality, including Rewind, was being sunset.
  • Desktop and web recording were discontinued, although previously recorded meetings were expected to remain accessible during 2026.
  • Users could export their information or delete their accounts.

Limitless also stated that service would no longer be available from December 5, 2025, in Brazil, China, the European Union, Israel, South Korea, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. Users in those regions were given until December 19, 2025, to download information before account and associated-data deletion. These were Limitless’s stated policies and should not be generalized to Meta’s other services.

Privacy is central to the acquisition’s significance

A wearable that records conversations creates a different privacy problem from a conventional voice assistant. The Pendant could capture nearby people’s voices, not just the wearer’s speech. Limitless’s materials said users were required to notify people and obtain consent before recording them.

Limitless’s published privacy and support materials also explained that:

  • A white LED indicated recording.
  • Recordings, transcripts, and summaries could be stored according to user retention settings.
  • Audio and transcripts could be sent to third-party AI providers for transcription and summarization.
  • Collected information could be used to improve services and AI models subject to the company’s policies.
  • Users could export or delete recordings and account data.
  • The company did not guarantee absolute security.

That model raises important questions for any future Meta implementation:

  • Will Meta preserve an equally visible recording indicator?
  • Will Limitless data remain separate from Meta account, social, and wearable data?
  • What happens to recordings after the promised 2026 support period?
  • Can users export raw audio as well as transcripts and summaries?
  • How will bystanders’ voices be handled?
  • How will workplace, medical, educational, legal, and two-party-consent rules affect deployment?

Meta has not established that it will use Limitless recordings to train Meta AI. That possibility may concern users, but it should not be presented as a confirmed consequence of the acquisition.

What has not been announced

The acquisition should not be treated as a product launch. The available announcements do not confirm:

  • A Meta-branded AI pendant
  • Limitless software in current Ray-Ban Meta or Oakley Meta glasses
  • An always-listening mode for future Meta glasses
  • A release date for a Limitless-derived device
  • A new subscription service based on the Pendant
  • A specific Orion successor using Limitless technology
  • The acquisition price or financial terms

What existing Pendant owners should do

  1. Export important information. Download recordings, transcripts, summaries, and other data you may need before any stated access deadline.
  2. Check your regional status. Availability changed immediately in several jurisdictions, including the EU and UK.
  3. Review retention settings. Do not assume that a subscription change means indefinite storage or access.
  4. Delete data you no longer need. This is particularly important for sensitive workplace, medical, financial, or family conversations.
  5. Do not assume replacement support. New Pendant sales ended, so hardware loss, damage, pairing problems, and battery failure may become harder to resolve.
  6. Continue obtaining consent. The acquisition did not remove the privacy obligations associated with recording other people.

The practical meaning of the deal

For Meta, Limitless may provide expertise in the hardest part of a persistent AI wearable: giving an assistant useful personal context without making the device socially unacceptable or legally risky. Camera glasses already help Meta understand what is in front of a user. Limitless’s technology points toward remembering what the user heard and discussed.

The trade-off is substantial. More context can make assistants more useful, but cloud transcription, third-party AI processing, long-term retention, and bystander capture increase privacy exposure. Glasses may also make recording less obvious than a pendant with a prominent form factor and visible light.

Readers interested in buying current Meta hardware should treat Meta’s AI glasses as adjacent products, not direct Limitless replacements. Meta announced Meta Glasses starting at $299, while Meta Ray-Ban Display started at $799, but neither product should be assumed to include the Pendant’s exact recording, memory, or subscription workflow. Buyers should compare recording behavior, privacy controls, retention, prescription support, battery life, display features, subscriptions, and regional availability.

Bottom line

Meta did acquire Limitless, but the clearest interpretation is broader than “Meta bought a smart-glasses company.” Meta acquired a company experienced in persistent audio capture, transcription, personal memory, and wearable AI. Those capabilities could strengthen future glasses or other devices, yet no specific Limitless-powered Meta product has been announced. For existing customers, the most important facts are that Pendant sales ended, service changes took effect, support was promised through 2026, and data should be exported before access or retention policies change.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
