That matters: a meaningful comparison depends on each watch’s exact reference, movement, metal, condition, and provenance—not the CPCP label alone.
What CPCP means—and what it does not
CPCP stands for Collection Privée Cartier Paris, Cartier’s historical collection of limited-production watches that revisited important designs from the brand’s past and paired them with mechanical movements. Christie’s describes the collection as running from 1998 to 2008 and characterizes it as very limited in numbers; Sotheby’s also places the collection in that period. Christie’s describes the Tortue Monopusher as part of a “collection of watches based on historic Cartier designs but equipped with modern mechanical movements.”

The label does not identify a single model or specification. CPCP watches vary by reference, case material, dimensions, calibre, and complication, so a collection-level description cannot substitute for details about the individual watch.
Why the exact reference matters
Two auction records for Tortue watches illustrate how much can differ even within the same historic design family:

| Example | Case and dimensions | Movement | Record details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christie’s circa-2008 Tortue Monopusher | 18k gold; 34 × 43 mm, per Christie’s catalogue record | Manual calibre 045MC, which the lot essay attributes to THA Èbauche | Silvered dial signed “Paris”; Cartier certificate and other included items are listed. Christie’s lot record |
| Sotheby’s circa-2000 Tortue reference 2518D | Platinum; 33 × 34 mm, per Sotheby’s 2021 auction record | Mechanical calibre 437MC, 18 jewels | Sapphire display back secured by eight screws; Cartier strap and white-gold folding clasp are listed. Sotheby’s auction record |
These are examples, not the unidentified watches in this spotlight. Their dimensions and specifications should not be generalized to other CPCP references, and the auction records do not establish present availability, current asking prices, or service history for any other watch.
What to compare across the three watches
For a useful side-by-side comparison, start with the reference and verify each detail against the individual watch and its documentation. Sotheby’s collector guide identifies originality, condition, rarity, historical significance, and provenance as relevant considerations. Sotheby’s Cartier collecting guide also associates CPCP dials with the “Paris” signature and guilloché decoration; neither feature alone proves authenticity.
- Identity and dimensions: Record the full reference, case metal, and stated or measured dimensions for each example. Confirm that the watch and its paperwork agree.
- Movement and complication: Note the calibre and whether the movement is manual or automatic, along with any complication. Ask for clear movement photographs or an inspection by a qualified watchmaker when appropriate.
- Dial and originality: Check the dial signature and pattern, then ask whether the dial, hands, crown, case, and clasp are original to the watch. A correct-looking detail is not, by itself, authentication.
- Condition and alteration: Request close photographs and a written account of wear, polishing, replacement parts, or other alterations. Case shape and edges can be important on shaped Cartier designs.
- Service and provenance: Ask for dated service records and supporting ownership or purchase documentation. A listing’s mention of a certificate or accessories does not independently establish service history or prove authenticity.
- Completeness: Record whether a box, papers, certificate, strap, and clasp are included, and whether each item is original or later replacement. Treat completeness as useful context, not a substitute for examining the watch.
Historical CPCP is not the current Cartier Privé collection
Cartier’s present-day Cartier Privé branding is separate from the historical CPCP collection. On its official page, Cartier describes the 10th edition as revisiting the Tank Normale, Tortue Monopusher Chronograph, and Crash Skeleton. The new Tank Normale is described as a manual-winding mechanical model with a seven-row platinum bracelet, echoing a 1934 model. Cartier’s official Cartier Privé page provides that current-collection context; it does not identify the pre-owned trio in this spotlight.
