The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore began as a deliberate provocation: a larger, thicker, more assertive reinterpretation of the Royal Oak for a younger generation. Designed by Emmanuel Gueit and introduced in 1993 as a 42 mm chronograph, it challenged the restrained proportions of its celebrated predecessor. The Offshore soon grew beyond a single oversized watch into a collection spanning different sizes, complications, materials and collaborations.
Why Audemars Piguet created the Offshore
The Offshore’s story began with a name before it began with a watch. Audemars Piguet registered “Offshore” on February 22, 1989; the name was not yet attached to a Royal Oak variant. In April that year, young designer Emmanuel Gueit produced the first study sketches. The company’s official collection page describes the Offshore as born in 1993 and inspired by powerboat racing, while its archive traces the design’s origins to the late 1980s.
By then, the Royal Oak had been established for years. Gérald Genta designed the original, introduced in 1972, and Gueit was asked to refresh its design for a younger audience. The Offshore was therefore neither a Genta design nor simply a larger version of his watch: it was Gueit’s attempt to make the Royal Oak’s visual language feel disruptive again. Early sketches considered a compass before the project settled on a chronograph.
Gueit recalled the brief in a 2016 interview reproduced by AP Chronicles: “He wanted to produce a masculine, assertive watch for young people.” The “he” was Steve Urquhart, who entrusted Gueit with the redesign.

Why the 1993 watch looked so radical
The first Offshore was presented in 1993, after a planned debut for the Royal Oak’s 20th anniversary in 1992 slipped while the case and water resistance were developed. Its 42 mm case and 14.05 mm thickness made it conspicuously larger than the Royal Oaks of the period. The scale was intentional: AP’s archive says the design multiplied the volume of the largest men’s Royal Oak then available.
That size was only part of the departure. The pronounced gasket, rubber-covered crown and rubber details around the pushers, plus rounded bracelet links, made the watch look and feel more overtly sporty than the original Royal Oak. Gueit described his aim as making it large, thick and assertive. The official collection account says the watchmaking world was initially outraged, while younger enthusiasts embraced it. Its nickname, “The Beast,” captured both its dimensions and the challenge it posed to prevailing taste.

The contrast with the original is clearest in intent and visual emphasis: Genta’s 1972 Royal Oak had become an icon, while Gueit’s 1993 Offshore deliberately turned up the scale and made rubber and thickness part of the statement. They share a design lineage, but they are distinct creations.
How one chronograph became a collection
For several years, the Offshore remained largely close to its original format. In 1996, AP broadened the range with smaller and more varied watches. Its archive documents 30 mm women’s models and 38 mm calendar watches alongside the original 42 mm size.

The expansion accelerated in 1997, when the line added complications and more expressive treatments. The archive records perpetual-calendar and time-zone models, gem-set versions, and vivid anniversary colors designed by Gueit: yellow, green, orange, red, brown and sky blue. Titanium followed in 1998. The result was a collection that kept the original’s bold, sporty character while testing different proportions, functions, materials and dial treatments.

Some archival figures give a sense of the Offshore’s growth, but they are Audemars Piguet’s own historical records rather than independently audited market totals. AP Chronicles records more than 1,000 Offshore sales in 1997, 1,339 units delivered in 2000 excluding ladies’ models, and 14,011 watches sold in 2010. It also records more than 1,116 examples of Model 25807 produced between 1996 and 2004.

The breadth of the collection could reach extremes. AP Chronicles’ record for model 25894BA says the 1997 42 mm chronograph was set with 782 brilliant- and baguette-cut diamonds totaling approximately 18.56 carats, with one unit made. That one-off is an exceptional archival example, not a typical production Offshore.

In 1999, Audemars Piguet created the Royal Oak Offshore End of Days with Arnold Schwarzenegger, associating the watch with the film of the same name. The edition was limited to 500 pieces. François-Henry Bennahmias, AP’s CEO from 2012 to 2023, later described the collaboration as helping put the collection on the map, especially in street culture, and as the beginning of a trend for celebrity limited editions. That account identifies how the brand understands the collaboration’s role; it is not an independently measured assessment of cultural impact.

The partnership helped attach a public persona to what had begun as an aggressively scaled design experiment. The Offshore’s identity came to encompass not only size and sportiness but also conspicuous colors, unusual materials and editions associated with prominent figures.
What changed—and what endured
The Offshore’s design language has evolved through changing materials, finishes, dials and movements. The 30th-anniversary models illustrate that evolution without abandoning the collection’s original premise: AP presented chronographs that revisited earlier references using contemporary materials and movements. One was a 42 mm black ceramic chronograph with integrated Calibre 4404 and a flyback function.
That anniversary example is evidence of continuity and technical development, not a complete account of every model currently available. The official collection lineup can change; the enduring historical thread is the Offshore’s effort to make the Royal Oak bolder and more overtly sporty, first through scale and rubber details, then through a widening range of complications and treatments.
