Porsche Design began in 1972, when Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche founded a design studio in Stuttgart to carry the principles he had brought to Porsche’s cars into products beyond the automobile. Its first defining watch, the Chronograph I, expressed that approach through a functional form pared back to essentials. This is the story of the brand’s watchmaking roots—and how its design work grew beyond watches.
Why Porsche Design began
Before founding the studio, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche worked in the family company. He joined in 1958 and designed the Porsche 911. Changes to the company’s structure at the start of the 1970s preceded his move to establish an independent design studio. Porsche Design dates its founding to 1972, in Stuttgart. Porsche Design’s heritage account describes the move as an effort to apply the company’s design principles beyond cars.
The idea behind that work was not styling for its own sake. F. A. Porsche summarized the philosophy this way: “If you analyze the function of an object, its form often becomes obvious.” The principle helps explain why the brand’s early watch became its most enduring design reference.
The Chronograph I established the watch identity
The Chronograph I dates to 1972 and is the starting point of Porsche Design’s timepiece history. The brand presents it as a practical, durable instrument whose design removes what is not needed. Its importance lies in that combination: a watch conceived as functional equipment, shaped by the same design outlook that informed the founder’s work on automobiles. Design authorship and watch production
Design identity and manufacturing arrangements are distinct parts of the story. WatchTime reports that Porsche Design initially contracted watch production to established watchmakers, beginning with Orfina. That account is a specialist secondary source; it should not be mistaken for a statement about every later Porsche Design watch or production partner. From watches to a broader design brand
Porsche Design was not limited to timepieces. The P’8478 sunglasses, with interchangeable lenses, are another example of the brand applying functional thinking to an everyday object. The model shows how the design language extended beyond the watch while retaining an emphasis on utility and considered form. Porsche’s 50th-anniversary book announcement likewise presents the company’s history through watches, glasses, and accessories, describing them as design classics. The illustrated book covers the company’s history from 1972 through its 50th anniversary; the announcement does not establish its current availability. The 2022 anniversary reissue is not the 1972 original
For the brand’s 50th anniversary, Porsche Design released the Chronograph 1 – 1972 Limited Edition in January 2022. It was based on the historical design, but it is a later anniversary watch—not a Chronograph I produced in 1972. Porsche Design announced a production quantity of 500 pieces for this edition. The brand’s early history is best understood as a design project before it is a catalogue of watches: F. A.
