Rob Nudds’s 2021 account of their disagreement explains how both usages arose, while leaving the historical origin unconfirmed by primary records.
What does “California dial” mean?
The phrase is used for a visually distinctive dial that combines Arabic numerals in some hour positions with Roman numerals in others. In his October 17, 2021 Fratello article, Rob Nudds argues that this layout meaning is established in watch conversation and need not be discarded because the nickname may have another history.
Jeff Hess, whom the article identifies as co-author of The Best of Time Rolex Wristwatches: An Unauthorized History, describes a different meaning he encountered among vintage-watch participants: “California dial” could refer to a redone or fake dial. The disagreement is therefore not simply about what the dial looks like; it is also about what a speaker believes the name records.
Hess’s account of the name’s origins
Hess recounts that in the 1980s collectors sent worn dials to Kirk Rich Dial Co. in California for refinishing. In his telling, the shop applied the then-popular half-Arabic, half-Roman layout. The place associated with the refinishing work, he says, helped give the style its “California” name.

Hess further says that later alterations—including Tudor dials relabeled “Rolex Tudor”—helped associate the term with redone or fraudulent dials. As he put it, “The term ‘California Dial’ then became known among scammers to denote a ‘redone’ dial.” The Fratello article also recounts Hess’s claim that after Kirk Rich refused some work on non-original dials, scammers turned to another refinisher in Canada.
This is an attributed recollection, not a documented company history: the article does not reproduce contemporaneous records or company documentation independently verifying Kirk Rich’s practices or the evolution of the term.

Why the meanings remain in dispute
Nudds accepts Hess’s story as plausible but rejects the idea that it rules out the layout meaning. A nickname can acquire an association with refinishing and still be used descriptively for a recognizable arrangement of numerals. The two senses answer different questions: one concerns a dial’s appearance; the other concerns its alleged history or authenticity.
- Layout: Does the dial combine Arabic and Roman hour markers?
- Provenance: Is the dial original to the watch, or has it been refinished or otherwise altered? The numeral layout alone cannot establish this.
- Context: Is the speaker using the descriptive layout nickname or Hess’s reported collector usage?
The 2021 article records the two accounts and frames an open question; it does not establish an official, exclusive definition. Its account of the historical origin remains attributed rather than independently corroborated.

How to use the term clearly
When discussing a particular watch, describe the visible layout and the dial’s provenance separately. For example, “a half-Arabic, half-Roman dial” states what can be seen; “a refinished dial” makes a claim about its history and should be supported by evidence. If using “California dial,” add context when the distinction matters, since another collector may understand the phrase differently.
