Buying a watch at Catawiki means bidding in an online auction marketplace where experts select objects for auction. That review is one part of the process—not a guarantee about a particular watch. Before bidding, check the listing and seller, calculate the bid plus fees and shipping, and account separately for possible import charges. If there is a delivery or order problem, follow the deadlines and instructions shown by Catawiki for that order.

How buying a watch at Catawiki works

Browse the watch auctions, assess a specific listing, and place a bid if its condition, evidence, seller information, and likely total cost meet your requirements. If you win, Catawiki says buyers should pay through its secure payment method within three days after the auction. The platform says it holds payment until three days after receipt or until pickup is confirmed without a complaint.

Catawiki’s in-house experts review and select objects for auction. That screening is useful context, but it does not replace your own assessment of the watch, seller, and listing evidence.

What will a Catawiki watch really cost?

Estimate the checkout amount by adding the winning bid, the Buyer Protection fee, and shipping. Then consider whether the shipment route could bring additional import charges after checkout.

Buyer Protection fee

Catawiki’s current Help Centre fee page states that the Buyer Protection fee is 9% of the final bid plus €3. It is calculated on the final bid, not on shipping, and includes VAT where applicable. Catawiki’s example is a €100 final bid: €100 × 9% + €3 = €12.

Shipping

The buyer generally pays shipping unless the seller explicitly offers free shipping. The shipping price is shown on the object page and added at checkout. Catawiki says the displayed shipping rate includes carrier fees, packaging, and applicable taxes identified by the platform, but it may not include customs duties or import taxes. Check the stated shipping origin and whether the seller ships to your destination before bidding.

Possible import charges

Depending on the route and local rules, you may owe import VAT or GST, customs duty, or a carrier clearance or handling fee. Whether charges apply, and how much they are, can depend on customs classification, declared value, origin, destination, and local rules. Catawiki says buyers are usually responsible for them. Shipments within the same country or customs area generally do not incur import charges; cross-border routes may. Without your destination and the shipment route, a reliable tax estimate is not possible.

Keep the distinction clear: checkout total is not necessarily the same as landed cost. Customs or the carrier may collect additional charges later.

How to assess a watch listing before bidding

Use the listing itself as the starting point. Catawiki advises buyers to review the object’s photos and description, condition, dimensions, country of origin, seller location and review score, and shipping options and cost. Ask the seller about any material uncertainty early; Catawiki cautions that a reply may not arrive before the auction closes.

Compare the watch, not just the headline price

When comparing listings, match the model or reference and movement as closely as possible. Then compare:

  • Condition, disclosed flaws, and any restoration.
  • Originality and completeness, including box, papers, and bracelet.
  • Evidence of service or authenticity, where available.
  • Seller reviews and location.
  • Shipping route, delivery cost, and possible import exposure.

A lower bid may not be the better value if the condition, included accessories, delivery route, or likely landed cost differs.

What documentation can help

Catawiki’s watch guidance identifies materials that can assist assessment, including a watch register document, recognized authenticity verification, Swiss certified pre-owned program documentation, and manufacturer archive extracts. For exclusive and unused watches, its guidance asks sellers for further evidence such as stamped warranty cards, invoices or service records, full-set materials, and close-up images of identifying details. Treat these as useful evidence to examine, not an automatic guarantee.

A watchmaker’s loupe can help with a hands-on visual inspection, but it is optional and does not authenticate a watch. For a high-value purchase, you may choose to arrange an independent specialist inspection; that is separate from Catawiki’s selection process.

What Catawiki’s watch acceptance rules do—and do not—tell buyers

Catawiki’s currently displayed seller guidance says it accepts authentic watches that meet category and quality requirements. It states a €200 minimum expected value for watches and describes categories including vintage men’s watches before 1980, premium watches from the 1980s onward, and exclusive watches from the 1980s onward. The page gives value thresholds of €200–€1,000 for premium and €1,000 or more for exclusive watches, and says a reserve price is not allowed for watches valued below €500.

These are seller-side admission criteria, not a buyer warranty, proof of authenticity, or assurance about an individual watch’s condition. Policies can change, so check Catawiki’s live watch submission guidelines if the categories or thresholds matter to your decision.

Payment, delivery, and what to do if something goes wrong

Keep the order and shipping records, and use the order-specific Help Centre instructions if there is a concern. Catawiki recommends messaging the seller first, then contacting support through the Help Centre or Orders page when needed. Describe the issue factually and include relevant order or delivery details. Any outcome depends on case review; a refund or cancellation is not automatic.

Catawiki’s current buyer-safety guidance gives these time windows:

  • Pay within three days after the auction.
  • Report an issue within three days after delivery, with the exact date recorded through tracking.
  • Report missing tracking or trouble communicating with the seller within ten days of payment.

Its Help Centre says: “If there are any issues with the order you received, please inform us within 3 days after delivery (the exact date will be recorded through Track & Trace).” Check the instructions attached to your order, since platform guidance and deadlines can change.

Quick pre-bid checklist

  • Confirm the reference, movement, condition, and disclosed restoration against the listing evidence.
  • Review photos, documentation, seller reviews, and seller location; ask about important gaps before the auction ends.
  • Calculate final bid plus the Buyer Protection fee and shipping.
  • Check whether the origin-to-destination route could add customs, import tax, or carrier fees.
  • Know where to find your order’s payment and problem-reporting instructions if you win.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
