Apple Watch’s history is a shift from companion device to watch family. The original 2015 Apple Watch introduced the format; GPS, cellular, larger Always-On displays and safety features expanded its role; and Apple Watch Ultra created a dedicated rugged, adventure-focused branch in 2022.
Apple Watch did not become an important watch category by simply adding a new chip every year. Its history is a gradual change in purpose: from a highly customizable extension of the iPhone, to a more independent fitness and safety device, and finally to a distinct watch for endurance, navigation, water sports and remote environments. The original Apple Watch laid down the format; Apple Watch Ultra turned that format into a separate, rugged branch.
The original Apple Watch (2015): a watch with several identities
Apple introduced the first model as simply Apple Watch, and it arrived in nine initial markets on April 24, 2015. “Series 0” is a useful retrospective nickname, but it was never Apple’s launch name.
That first model was unusually ambitious in its positioning. Apple presented it as a timepiece, a communications device, a health-and-fitness companion, and a personal accessory. The range itself made the point: buyers could choose Apple Watch Sport, Apple Watch, or the 18-karat-gold Apple Watch Edition. Swappable bands, watch faces and case materials made customization central from day one.

In hindsight, the original’s lasting achievement was not independence from the iPhone. It established the interaction vocabulary that still defines the product: a rectangular wrist display, the Digital Crown, haptic notifications, activity rings, interchangeable bands and a watch that could be both practical tool and personal object.
2016–2017: Apple Watch learns to go farther from the phone
Series 1 and Series 2 split the idea in two
In 2016, Apple clarified the line. Series 1 refreshed the original-style aluminum model with a faster dual-core processor and GPU. Series 2 was the more consequential fork: it added built-in GPS, a brighter display and 50-metre water resistance, alongside its dual-core processor.
GPS meant runners and cyclists could record routes without bringing an iPhone. The water-resistance rating made swimming a more natural part of the product’s fitness story. Neither change made Apple Watch a specialist outdoor instrument, but together they established a direction that later led to Ultra: better location awareness and more confidence around water.
Series 3 makes cellular the headline
Series 3, on sale from September 22, 2017, brought built-in cellular to selected models while retaining GPS-only versions. This was the first Apple Watch that could plausibly be used for more than a short period away from an iPhone: calls, messages and selected data services could reach the wrist through a compatible cellular plan.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →That distinction matters in the lineage. GPS gave the watch location; cellular gave it a path to communication. Service still depends on the particular watch, carrier, plan, country and setup, but Series 3 established Apple Watch as something more than a display for iPhone alerts.
Series 4 (2018): the modern Apple Watch takes shape
Series 4 was the first major visual redesign and one of the line’s most important turning points. Apple enlarged the display while refining the case, making complications, messages and workout information easier to read at a glance. The bigger screen was not just cosmetic; it made the watch more useful as a wrist-first interface rather than a tiny, occasionally awkward phone substitute.
It also marked a much stronger health-and-safety emphasis. Series 4 introduced fall detection and an electrical heart-rate sensor used with the ECG app. Apple said the ECG app received FDA De Novo classification. That is an important regulatory and product milestone, but it should not be read as a promise that an Apple Watch diagnoses every heart condition or is appropriate for every user. Eligibility, region, software and regulatory availability can all affect access to features.

- Material: This band is made of durable double-layer nylon weave and the nylon fabric is crafted from cotton woven material which is exceptionally soft and light, making comfortable to wear.
- Band Width (Size): Standard 16mm, 18mm, 19mm, 20mm, 21mm, 22mm, 24mm. This watch band is compatible with all watches (including smart watches) with above band width. To determine the right size, use a ruler measure the interior distance between the two lugs on the watch case.
- Adjustable: Fit wrist 14.5cm-22cm (5.7-8.6 inches). Adopt an durable Hook and Loop closure which can be cycled (opened and closed) thousands of times, allowing the watch to be fastened or adjusted in seconds.
- Quick Release Design: Quick release spring bars allow you to easily install and remove the watch band without tools. You just need to slide quick release knob with finger.
- Washable: This one-piece strap can be washed when it gets dirty because its color is a permanent ink that will not fade. Ideal for sports and everyday use.
From this point on, Apple Watch’s value proposition was increasingly built around what it could notice or make easier to act on: activity, heart-related notifications, falls and emergency communication—not merely what it could display.
2019–2021: making the wrist display more usable
Series 5: information without the wrist raise
Series 5’s defining feature was the Always-On Retina display. Earlier Apple Watches were designed around the raise-to-wake gesture. An always-visible time and complication screen made the device feel more like a conventional watch while keeping glanceable information available during meetings, workouts and navigation.
Series 5 also added a built-in compass, current-elevation information, international emergency calling and titanium as a case-material option. These were not all aimed at the same buyer, but they broadened the watch’s practical identity: navigation, safety and premium materials could coexist in one product.
Series 6: a new sensor, and SE becomes a permanent line
In 2020, Series 6 added Apple’s Blood Oxygen sensor and app, the S6 system in package and an always-on altimeter. Apple introduced the feature as part of its health toolkit; availability and use are subject to the applicable model, software, regulatory status and region. It should not be described as a universal diagnostic tool.
The larger strategic move that year was the first Apple Watch SE. SE was not simply an older flagship sold cheaply. It became the value-oriented branch: a modern, larger-display Apple Watch with core fitness and safety capabilities, but without every sensor and premium feature of the flagship Series model. From 2020 onward, the lineup had a clearer three-part logic: SE for essential Apple Watch experience, the numbered Series for the general-purpose mainstream flagship, and—later—Ultra for the rugged premium extreme.
Series 7: size, durability and charging speed
Series 7, available from October 15, 2021 after its September announcement, concentrated on daily usability. Its display grew again; charging became faster; and Apple emphasized improved crack resistance, IP6X dust resistance and WR50 water resistance.
This generation is easy to underrate because it did not introduce a headline health sensor. Yet it reinforced an important pattern: Apple Watch was being refined as something people could wear more continuously. A larger screen reduces friction, durability supports rougher daily use, and faster charging makes overnight or frequent wear easier to fit into real life.

2022: the lineup becomes a family, and Ultra becomes its own branch
Apple’s 2022 releases made the segmentation explicit. Series 8 introduced temperature sensing for women’s-health features and Crash Detection. The second-generation SE refreshed the lower-priced branch. As with other health and safety features, the applicable conditions and availability matter: temperature-based features and Crash Detection are not universal guarantees and can vary with region, eligibility, hardware, software and other requirements.
But the defining product of the year was the first Apple Watch Ultra. It was not merely a larger Series watch in a different finish. Its hardware, controls and stated use cases created a dedicated sports-and-adventure branch.

Why the first Apple Watch Ultra was genuinely different
| Design choice | What it changed |
|---|---|
| 49mm titanium case and flat sapphire crystal | A larger, more protective physical format for a watch intended for demanding activity. |
| Enlarged Digital Crown and side button | Controls designed to be easier to operate with gloves or in more active conditions. |
| Orange Action button | A customizable physical shortcut for immediate access to a chosen function. |
| Dual-frequency GPS | A location-focused capability aligned with outdoor navigation and training. |
| WR100 water resistance and recreational-dive support | A substantially more water-oriented proposition than the mainstream Series line. |
| Three activity-specific band designs | Bands designed around endurance, exploration and water-sport use rather than treating the strap as an afterthought. |
| Apple’s up-to-36-hour normal-use estimate | A stated endurance target double the mainstream line’s traditional 18-hour claim, while remaining an “up to” estimate rather than a fixed result. |
The distinction is therefore about intended environment as much as size. The numbered Series watches remain general-purpose smartwatches for everyday wear, fitness, communication and health features. Ultra was designed around longer endurance, navigation, outdoor readability, water activity and immediate physical controls. That does not mean every athlete needs an Ultra, or that it is automatically better for every sport; it means Apple built it around a different set of priorities.
2023–2024: faster interaction, then a thinner mainstream flagship
Series 9 and Ultra 2 arrived in 2023 with the S9 system in package and the double-tap gesture. The gesture gave users another way to act on the watch while one hand was occupied. Series 9 also represented a broader push toward more capable on-device interaction.
Ultra 2 carried that silicon into the outdoor line and added double tap, on-device Siri, Precision Finding, a wider altitude range and a display rated for up to 3,000 nits of maximum brightness. Apple continued to state up to 36 hours of normal battery life for Ultra 2. As always, that figure is an Apple estimate under stated testing conditions, not a guarantee of an individual owner’s result.
In 2024, Series 10 shifted attention back to the mainstream design. Apple presented it as its thinnest Apple Watch to that point, with a larger display, faster charging, water depth and temperature sensing, and sleep-apnea notifications. The exact availability and suitability of sleep-related notifications depend on factors including model, country or region, age or eligibility, software and regulation; a notification is not the same as a medical diagnosis.
Ultra 2 also received a black titanium finish and watchOS 11 capabilities in 2024. This was a refresh of Ultra 2, not an “Ultra 3.” That naming detail prevents a common break in the timeline.

2025: the three branches mature
By 2025, Apple Watch had a fully developed ladder rather than a single annual model. Series 11 added longer battery life, tougher cover glass and 5G cellular. SE 3 gained the S10 chip, an Always-On display, fast charging and 5G. Cellular functionality still requires compatible service and is not equally available through every carrier or country.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 continued the adventure branch with Emergency SOS via satellite, an Apple claim of up to 42 hours of battery life, and what Apple described as the largest Apple Watch display then available. Satellite emergency communication is especially important to describe carefully: it is a feature with coverage, country, eligibility, setup and operating-condition limitations, not a promise that help can be reached everywhere.
The progression from the original Apple Watch to Ultra 3 is visible in three connected arcs:

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Independence: built-in GPS in Series 2, cellular in Series 3, increasingly capable location and navigation tools, and finally satellite emergency communication in Ultra 3.
- Health and safety: fall detection and ECG in Series 4; Blood Oxygen in Series 6; temperature sensing and Crash Detection in Series 8; then sleep-related notifications in Series 10. These are named features and alerts, not blanket claims of disease detection.
- Glanceability and wearability: Series 4’s larger redesign, Series 5’s Always-On display, Series 7’s larger and tougher screen, and Series 10’s thinner body and larger display all made the watch more practical as a wrist device.
What the Apple Watch history means for a buyer now
The product family’s history explains how to read the current names. SE is the value line for people who want the core Apple Watch experience without every flagship sensor or material. The numbered Series is the all-round model: the best fit for most buyers who want an everyday smartwatch with Apple’s current general-purpose features. Ultra is the premium, larger 49mm titanium option designed around endurance, navigation, visibility, physical controls and water/outdoor use.
Choosing Ultra should start with fit and use, not just a desire for the biggest specification list. Its larger case, dedicated Action button, water credentials, dual-frequency GPS and longer stated battery target make sense for long training days, outdoor navigation and water activity. For someone who mainly wants notifications, activity tracking, workouts and a comfortable everyday watch, a current Series or SE model may be the more proportionate choice.
For shoppers specifically looking at Apple Watch Ultra 3, verify the exact case size, band size, cellular service support, regional availability of satellite and health/safety features, and compatibility requirements before buying. A 49mm Ultra band, a magnetic fast-charging cable and protection accessories should likewise be chosen for the exact Ultra generation and physical size. The family resemblance across Apple Watch generations is real, but features and compatibility are not interchangeable assumptions.
The historical takeaway
Apple Watch began as an unusually personal take on the smartwatch: one product meant to be a watch, fitness companion, communication surface and fashion object. The key releases then gave it GPS, cellular, a larger Always-On display, more health and safety features, and a clearer value tier through SE. Ultra completed the transformation of the range from one customizable smartwatch into a family of watches with deliberately different jobs.
That is why the 2022 Ultra launch matters more than a case-size comparison. It formalized a new Apple Watch category—one built for people who need more endurance, navigation and environmental resilience—while the standard Series continued to evolve as the everyday center of the line.

Frequently Asked Questions
Was “Series 0” Apple’s official name for the first Apple Watch?
No. Apple called the 2015 model simply Apple Watch. “Series 0” is a retrospective shorthand used to distinguish it from the numbered Series models that followed.
When did Apple Watch become more independent from the iPhone?
Series 2 added built-in GPS and 50-metre water resistance; Series 3 added a built-in-cellular option. Together, those changes made Apple Watch more usable away from an iPhone, subject to model, carrier and regional support.
What makes Apple Watch Ultra different from the numbered Series watches?
Ultra launched in 2022 with a 49mm titanium case, flat sapphire crystal, enlarged controls, an Action button, dual-frequency GPS, WR100 water resistance, recreational-dive support and Apple’s up-to-36-hour normal-use battery estimate. It was designed as a separate outdoor and adventure branch, not only as a larger Series model.
Was the 2024 black titanium Ultra a new Ultra generation?
No. In 2024, Apple Watch Ultra 2 received a black titanium finish; it remained Ultra 2. Apple Watch Ultra 3 arrived in 2025.
Is Apple Watch Ultra the right choice for everyone?
Not necessarily. Ultra’s size, stated endurance, navigation features, water credentials and physical controls are most relevant for demanding outdoor, endurance and water use. The numbered Series is the general-purpose flagship, while SE is the lower-priced essential-feature branch.
The Bottom Line
From the original Apple Watch in 2015 to Apple Watch Ultra 3 in 2025, the defining story is diversification: SE for essentials, the numbered Series for everyday flagship use, and Ultra for longer-lasting, more rugged outdoor and water-focused use.
