At Vacheron Constantin, the American 1921 is a striking example of geometry serving a practical purpose: its angled dial can be read without turning the wrist. Patek Philippe’s shaped-watch history is broader, spanning early retailer-linked Gondolo wristwatches and later designs such as the Golden Ellipse and Twenty~4.
What makes a watch “shaped”?
In its case-shape guide, Patek Philippe uses “form” for watches whose cases are not circular. That category covers more than rectangles: the shape may be defined by the case outline, the way it curves around the wrist, or a deliberate departure from a standard round silhouette. Patek’s guide shows rounded-octagonal Nautilus and Aquanaut cases, square Cubitus cases, and both cuff-style and round Twenty~4 models. These examples illustrate the range of modern shapes, not a claim that every collection shares the same origin or design purpose. Patek Philippe’s case-shape guide
Vacheron Constantin’s American 1921: an angled dial for a glance
Vacheron Constantin describes the American 1921 as a wristwatch made for the American market during the Roaring Twenties. Its defining arrangement is an offset cushion case paired with a dial turned at an angle; the crown sits between one and two o’clock. The brand’s explanation is functional: the wearer can glance at the time without rotating the wrist. A 2026 Vacheron Constantin heritage feature similarly presents the dial angle as useful to drivers. These are the manufacturer’s accounts of the design’s intent. From the original to the Historiques revival
Vacheron Constantin reports that only 24 examples of the original reference were made. The company revived the design in 2008 as the Historiques American 21. In 2021, for its centenary, the brand says its Heritage and Restoration departments spent a year making and presenting one unique faithful recreation. According to Vacheron Constantin, the work involved months of archive research, observation and experimentation, with historical tools as well as tools made for the project. These production and restoration details are the brand’s published account. Vacheron Constantin’s centenary recreation story

Patek Philippe’s Gondolo: a retailer-linked beginning
Patek Philippe traces the Gondolo story to a shipment to Rio de Janeiro retailer Gondolo & Labouriau on 12 November 1872. In its 2007 historical account, the company says the relationship led to a collection designed especially for the Brazilian retailer from 1902 onward. The first Chronometro Gondolo wristwatches appeared around 1910, according to Patek Philippe’s 2009 release, in square, rectangular, tonneau and cushion-shaped forms. The company says the last Chronometro Gondolo was dispatched to Rio in 1927. Those dates and descriptions come from Patek Philippe’s retrospective histories. The buyers’ club behind the name
Patek Philippe’s 2009 account describes a distinctive sales system organized by Gondolo & Labouriau: a 180-member buyers’ club held weekly drawings connected with watch purchases. The release recounts 79 consecutive weekly drawings and gives the Chronometro Gondolo’s price as 790 Swiss francs. These figures describe the retailer’s historical arrangement as reported by Patek Philippe; they should not be read as evidence of a general watch-buying practice or independently verified statistics.
Gondolo as a present-day form collection
Patek Philippe’s current Gondolo collection identifies the line with form watches and features rectangular and cushion-shaped cases, while its collection page also presents archival tonneau and rectangular examples. The current collection’s language connects the historical name to non-round design, but it does not make every contemporary Gondolo identical to its early predecessors. Other Patek Philippe shapes: ellipse and cuff
Golden Ellipse, introduced in 1968
Patek Philippe says the Golden Ellipse debuted in 1968 and that its elliptical case was inspired by the golden ratio. That is the manufacturer’s account of a design inspiration, not proof that the watch’s proportions represent a universal mathematical ideal. For the collection’s 40th anniversary in 2008, Patek Philippe introduced a jumbo platinum version measuring 34 × 39.5 mm. Patek Philippe’s Golden Ellipse history
Twenty~4 and the bracelet-like case
Launched in 1999, Patek Philippe’s Twenty~4 was described by the company as its first collection designed exclusively for women. Its original Art Deco-inspired “manchette,” or cuff, model used a cambered rectangular case shaped to sit as a bracelet-like form on the wrist. The present collection also includes round cases, so Twenty~4 now encompasses more than the original cuff silhouette. Patek Philippe’s Twenty~4 collection

How the two histories differ
| Comparison | Vacheron Constantin | Patek Philippe |
|---|---|---|
| Example at the center of the story | American 1921: offset cushion case and angled dial, presented by the brand as a practical reading arrangement. | Chronometro Gondolo: a family of early wristwatches in several geometric forms, associated with Rio de Janeiro retailer Gondolo & Labouriau. |
| Historical setting | American-market design of the Roaring Twenties. | Retailer relationship dating to 1872; a dedicated collection from 1902 onward, according to Patek Philippe. |
| Later continuity | Revived in 2008, recreated uniquely for the 2021 centenary, and represented in later Historiques versions. | Gondolo sits alongside other shaped families, including the 1968 Golden Ellipse and the 1999 Twenty~4. |
| What the examples show | A signature asymmetrical layout can link case geometry to a specific reading position. | Non-round cases can form a much wider design vocabulary, from retailer-associated variety to later geometric and wrist-fitting concepts. |
The comparison is not a contest between equivalent collections. The American 1921 story centers on one recognizable design and its reinterpretations; Patek Philippe’s examples trace several distinct lines with different historical contexts. Together, they show that “shaped watch” is a useful category for case geometry, but not a single style or shared design rationale.
