The A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Rattrapante Platinum, reference 425.025, pairs a classically restrained argenté dial with a technically demanding split-seconds chronograph. Its platinum case measures 41.2 mm across and 12.6 mm thick; inside, the hand-wound L101.2 movement provides a 58-hour power reserve. Lange limits the model to 200 pieces and sells it exclusively through its boutiques. What is the 1815 Rattrapante Platinum?
Reference 425.025 is A. Lange & Söhne’s platinum version of the 1815 Rattrapante. The manufacturer calls it the brand’s first “pure split-seconds chronograph”: the watch is built around recording elapsed intervals and lap times, rather than combining the chronograph with another complication. The case is 950 platinum, while the argenté-colored dial is solid silver. Lange lists the edition as limited to 200 pieces and exclusive to its boutiques.
The design draws on the traditional 1815 language—Arabic numerals and a railway-track minute scale—while its vertical arrangement and two central chronograph hands signal the specialized timing function. That contrast is the watch’s defining idea: a formal, relatively quiet-looking dial conceals an elaborate mechanism.
How does the split-seconds chronograph work?
A conventional chronograph measures elapsed time with a seconds hand and usually a minute counter. A split-seconds, or rattrapante, chronograph adds a second central hand. Lange’s instructions describe both hands starting together when the pusher at 2 o’clock is pressed. The rattrapante hand can then be stopped independently to mark an intermediate time while the other chronograph hand continues running. Pressing again brings the stopped hand back into synchronization; the operation can be repeated.

This makes it possible to read a lap or split without stopping the overall timing run. The dial’s 30-minute counter at 12 records longer elapsed intervals, while subsidiary seconds sit at 6. The single rattrapante on this 1815 records splits within the chronograph’s minute, with the 30-minute totalizer tracking the overall run. Lange’s Double Split extends intermediate measurements to 30 minutes, and the Triple Split to as much as 12 hours; these offer different timing capabilities rather than being direct substitutes for this model.
Dial and case: restrained design, substantial presence
The dial combines dark blued hands with prominent Arabic numerals, a peripheral railway-track minute scale and a tachymeter scale. The chronograph’s 30-minute counter and small-seconds subdial are aligned vertically, giving the face a balanced, orderly appearance despite the additional central hand and scales.

In his September 2026 review, Jamie Weiss described the tone-on-tone presentation as unexpectedly subtle and praised the symmetry of the subdials and the rattrapante hand’s visual distinction. He also noted that 41.2 mm is not small, though it sits within the modern Lange size range, and that the weight of the precious-metal case is noticeable. Those are his observations; the listed dimensions alone cannot establish how the watch will feel on a particular wrist.
Movement and finishing
The manually wound L101.2 contains 365 parts, beats at 21,600 semi-oscillations per hour (3.0 Hz), and has a stated power reserve of 58 hours. Two column wheels govern the chronograph functions. The movement is visible through the sapphire-glass caseback, making its construction and finishing part of the watch’s presentation rather than hidden engineering.

Lange’s technical description of the movement highlights untreated German-silver bridges and cocks, screwed gold chatons, a hand-engraved balance cock, straight graining on moving chronograph components and polished chamfers. Weiss’s review also reports Glashütte striping and two hand-engraved elements on this platinum model: the balance cock and a chronograph bridge. He praised the movement’s finishing in his review.

How the platinum edition differs from the 2020 Honeygold version
The platinum 425.025 followed the 2020 “Homage to F. A. Lange” edition in Honeygold. The earlier edition was limited to 100 pieces; the current platinum model is limited to 200. Weiss characterizes the shift as a move from the earlier Honeygold presentation to a more restrained combination of white precious metal and argenté. The editions differ in material, dial impression and edition framing; the available information does not establish price parity or broader availability for either.

A. Lange & Söhne lists the official price as “Price upon request” and says the platinum model is available exclusively through Lange boutiques. Hodinkee Australia reported an approximate price of A$375,000 in its September 2026 review; that is a dated editorial estimate, not a current manufacturer quote or confirmation of a transaction price. Current remaining stock and live secondary-market values are not established here.

Who is this watch for?
The 1815 Rattrapante Platinum is aimed at a collector who wants a traditional-looking Lange chronograph but values the ability to record intermediate times with a mechanical split-seconds function. Its dial avoids a conspicuously sporty appearance, while the platinum case, boutique-only distribution and 200-piece limit make it a highly exclusive proposition. The 12.6 mm case height and Weiss’s observation about platinum weight are useful considerations for anyone assessing wearability, but neither predicts individual comfort.
Its strongest distinction is the tension between a composed 1815 face and a movement built for more involved timing than an ordinary chronograph. The trade-off is that the special function and limited boutique channel may matter more to the intended owner than everyday versatility or easy access.
