Glashütte became synonymous with German fine watchmaking through more than one company: Ferdinand Adolph Lange’s 1845 workshop helped anchor a local industry built on specialist trades and training. Its history also includes the nationalization of the postwar watch industry and A. Lange & Söhne’s return to the town in 1990. The sources below document the manufacture’s history, but do not establish whether visitors can tour it today.
Why is Glashütte famous for watches?
The town’s watchmaking story is closely tied to Ferdinand Adolph Lange, but its reputation grew from a broader network of makers and educators. In 1845, Lange established a pocket-watch workshop in Glashütte, where declining mining had weakened local livelihoods. According to the company’s 2020 history, he hired and trained 15 apprentices and encouraged workers to specialize in making watch components.
That approach helped create conditions for an industry rather than a single workshop. Other specialized businesses followed, while the Deutsche Uhrmacherschule, founded by Karl Moritz Großmann in 1878, helped pass watchmaking knowledge to later generations. The company’s retrospective account describes this ecosystem as central to the town’s development as a watchmaking center.
Lange’s path to Glashütte began in Dresden. He learned watchmaking under Johann Friedrich Gutkaes, and the two worked on the five-minute clock for the Semperoper. After further training and travel in France, England, and Switzerland, Lange returned to Saxony and founded his workshop in Glashütte. A. Lange & Söhne’s heritage account and its 2020 company history describe this early trajectory.

When was A. Lange & Söhne founded?
Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded his Glashütte pocket-watch workshop on 7 December 1845. That date marks the beginning of the firm’s local manufacturing story. It also marks an important point in Glashütte’s wider history: the workshop’s training and specialization helped support a town-wide trade that later included independent workshops and formal watchmaking education.
What happened to the company after World War II?
The Lange family headquarters, known as the Stammhaus, was completed in 1873 for both family life and manufacturing. A. Lange & Söhne says the building was expropriated on 20 April 1948. From 1951, it served as an administrative building for the state-owned VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe.

The company’s 2020 retrospective reports that the GUB combine had 2,500 employees during the period behind the Iron Curtain. That is a historical figure cited by the company, not a current workforce count or an independently audited statistic. The postwar period therefore changed both the company’s ownership and the organization of watchmaking in Glashütte, while production continued under state industry.
How did A. Lange & Söhne return to Glashütte?
Walter Lange and Günter Blümlein re-established Lange Uhren GmbH in Glashütte in 1990. The renewed brand presented its first contemporary collection in Dresden on 24 October 1994. It comprised four models:

The Dresden presentation linked the revival to the region’s longer history: Dresden was where Ferdinand Adolph Lange had trained and collaborated with Gutkaes, while Glashütte was the home of the manufacture and the wider watchmaking community. The company’s account of its history is available in its 2020 retrospective.
A. Lange & Söhne says it repurchased the Stammhaus in 2000, restored it for administrative and production use, and ceremonially reopened it on 7 December 2001. In a 2021 company press article, CEO Wilhelm Schmid said: “When you enter this building – whether as an employee or a visitor – one inevitably experiences the history of A. Lange & Söhne and Saxon fine watchmaking.” That quotation describes the building’s historical significance; it does not confirm that public visits or tours are currently offered. Can you visit the A. Lange & Söhne manufacture?
The company’s published account establishes the Stammhaus’s history and its administrative and production use, but it does not provide a current public tour schedule, booking process, or visitor-access policy. These sources therefore do not confirm whether the manufacture can be visited. Check directly with A. Lange & Söhne for current access arrangements before planning a trip; do not assume that the historical reopening or the CEO’s reference to visitors means tours are available.
