Raymond Weil spent 26 years building his career at Geneva watchmaker Camy Watch before founding his own company in 1976, during a crisis for the Swiss watch industry. He grew that venture into a family business and served the wider watch trade as well as his own firm. His story is one of a watch executive whose professional life was closely connected to music, the arts and the Geneva industry that shaped him.

From Geneva to the watch trade

Raymond Weil was born in Geneva on 10 October 1926. His parents’ work took the family to Salon-de-Provence in France, where he spent part of his childhood; they returned to Switzerland at the beginning of the Second World War. He studied at the École de Commerce in Neuchâtel and later worked in England for Société Générale de Surveillance, before entering the watch business.

In 1949, Weil joined Camy Watch S.A. in Geneva. He spent 26 years at the company and rose to become its director. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry described him as having advanced quickly within the firm.

Why Weil founded his own company

In 1976, after more than two decades at Camy Watch, Weil established a watch company of his own. He did so during a severe crisis for the watch industry. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry’s 6 February 2014 notice put the timing plainly: “In 1976, in the very midst of the watch industry crisis, he decided to set up his own company.” The sources establish the crisis context, but do not document a fuller personal account of why he chose that moment.

The venture was first called DINITA, a name formed from the two first names of Weil’s daughter, according to Patrimoine juif genevois. It later took the founder’s name: Raymond Weil.

His work for the wider watch industry

Weil’s professional contribution extended beyond his company. He held a number of roles in the trade, including president of the Union of Watch Manufacturers of Geneva, vice-president of the Watch Industry Training Centre in Lausanne, and membership in the Swiss watch federation. He also chaired the exhibitors’ committee of the Basel international watch and jewellery fair until 1995, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry’s 2014 notice. These titles refer to the organizations and roles of his period.

Music, art and aviation

Classical music and opera were important interests in Weil’s life. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry said that this passion influenced the company’s collections and promotional activity. A 2014 obituary in Monochrome Watches described the Amadeus collection, introduced in 1983, as the beginning of a series of collection names drawn from musical works or figures, including Parsifal and Nabucco. That account connects music to the brand’s public identity without implying that every collection was based on a particular composition.

Weil also took an interest in contemporary art and aviation. Patrimoine juif genevois records that he obtained his pilot’s licence at age 56. Together, these pursuits show a range of interests beyond watchmaking, while the documented link between music and the company’s collections offers a specific example of how one of them appeared in the brand.

A family business across generations

Weil’s son-in-law, Olivier Bernheim, joined the company in 1982 and became its president and CEO in 1996. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry reported in 2014 that Bernheim had run the company since then. Weil’s grandson Elie joined in 2006 and became CEO in 2014, according to Patrimoine juif genevois.

On the company’s official history page, reviewed on 7 October 2026, Raymond Weil describes itself as a family business and identifies Elie Bernheim as its leader. That is the brand’s current account of its leadership, rather than a guarantee that its management will remain unchanged.

Raymond Weil’s legacy

Weil died on 26 January 2014, aged 87. The chronology of his career runs from his 1949 arrival at Camy Watch to the independent company he founded in 1976; the family’s later leadership carried that enterprise into another generation. The official brand history, in a statement attributed to CEO Elie Bernheim, describes its legacy in terms of “independence, craftsmanship, and a deep connection to the Arts.” This is the company’s own characterization of the values it says continue to guide it.

For readers interested in the watches made under the name Weil established, the company’s current official collections include Freelancer, Millesime, A.R.T. and Toccata. These are present-day brand collections; the available sources do not establish that any particular current model was designed by Weil himself.
