How do you tell time with a Chromachron?
Read the visible color in the triangular opening of the black disc. The dial is divided into twelve colored triangles, one for each hour. As the disc rotates, the opening moves across the color field; the changing relationship between neighboring colors suggests progress toward the next hour.
Fratello describes the disc as moving at one triangle per hour and characterizes the indication as approximate, not exact. There is no conventional minute track to resolve the display into precise minutes. A full sector marks an hour, while the transition toward the next sector gives a broad sense of time passing. Why replace numerals with a color wheel?
Tian Harlan, born in Berlin and also known as Kristian Harlan, developed the color-time idea in the early 1970s. A color-time sculpture was associated with the 1972 Munich Olympic Games; Harlan later adapted the concept for wristwatches. Hodinkee describes that translation as replacing a watch’s dial with a color wheel and having the black center rotate like an hour hand. The colors were intended to evoke changing light and energy across the day. Fratello presents the watch as a response to the rigidity of exact timekeeping. That is a design philosophy: the available accounts do not establish that wearing the watch produces a particular mood or health effect.
What makes the display different from a conventional watch?

This difference is the point, not a flaw to be corrected by guessing at minutes. The Chromachron suits someone drawn to an unusual visual language and comfortable with less precision than an ordinary minute-indicated watch.

Do all Chromachron watches have the same construction?
No single configuration should be assumed for every vintage example. Fratello discusses an early mechanical watch, while Hodinkee’s account describes a later electric circuit and color-wheel mechanism. Check the movement in the specific watch rather than inferring it from the Chromachron name alone.
Fratello, drawing on Pieter Doensen’s book, also describes designs in transparent plastic and round, oval, and square cases, along with different case finishes. This is a selection of reported variations, not a complete catalog. When identifying or buying an example, inspect its movement, dial, case, and condition individually; provenance may also matter to the assessment.

What should you consider before choosing one?
- Readability: Decide whether an approximate indication without a minute track suits your daily needs.
- Movement: Confirm the movement in the particular watch; the documented examples are not all described as mechanically identical.
- Variant and condition: Compare the actual case and dial, and assess their condition rather than relying on a generalized description of the model.
- Provenance: Treat claims about a watch’s history as specific to that example and seek supporting documentation where available.
- Availability: Current stock and prices are not established by the cited design histories, so check a current specialist seller or auction listing for a particular watch.
The idea behind the “mood”
“Rainbow mood” works as a description of the Chromachron’s color-led appearance: the dial turns the hour into a shifting patch of color rather than a set of numerals. A passage reproduced by the Mr Jones design blog and attributed to Harlan’s watch packaging frames the concept as a different relationship with time. Because that wording is reproduced secondhand, it is better understood as packaging text than as independently verified documentation. Mr Jones’s Chromachron blog post reproduces the passage.
