Why might a shop be cautious about spring bars?
Spring bars hold a strap or bracelet between the watch’s lugs. The correct replacement depends on the watch, so a bar that seems close in size may not be the right one for that model. NOMOS, for example, says spring bars vary by model and lists replacements in pairs: NOMOS spring bars.

A shop might prefer to confirm compatibility and fit the part rather than sell an unverified replacement. That is a plausible explanation, not a proven account of this shop’s reasoning or evidence that refusing loose spring bars is standard practice.

How to get the right replacement
- Identify the watch. Note the brand and exact model or reference number. If you are unsure, check the case back, paperwork, or the brand’s support channel.
- Ask for a compatible part. Contact the brand, its boutique or service center, or a qualified watchmaker. Give them the model details and ask whether the bar is model-specific and whether it is supplied as a pair.
- Clarify the shop’s offer. Ask whether its installation service includes the correct spring bars, and what the fee covers, before agreeing to the work.
- Check the fit after installation. The strap should be secure at both lugs. If it feels loose or does not seat properly, do not wear the watch until a professional checks it.

If you change the strap yourself
- Confirm the replacement bar is specified for your watch before starting; do not assume a visually similar bar will fit.
- Use a spring-bar tool appropriate to the watch and the work. Tool designs and tips vary, so a catalogue listing does not mean one tool suits every case: Horotec spring-bar tools.
- Work carefully to avoid marking the case or damaging the strap. If the bar will not release or seat cleanly, stop and ask a watchmaker rather than forcing it.
- Before wearing the watch, check that both ends of the bar are engaged and the strap is secure.
Should you take future business elsewhere?
You can reasonably decide based on how the employee handled the request, whether the explanation was clear, and whether the offered installation service meets your needs. A polite refusal paired with a useful compatibility explanation is different from an unexplained refusal, but the post does not provide enough detail to judge the shop beyond this interaction. You can ask for clarification, seek the part or fitting help elsewhere, or choose not to return; none of those choices requires assuming the shop’s motive.
