A custom-modified Accutron Spaceview can only be understood from the details of that individual watch: its movement, what was changed, and how those changes affect fit, power, and service. The title alone does not identify the modification or establish how the watch performs. Use the checklist below to document the build accurately—and distinguish a factory Spaceview from a conversion.
What makes an Accutron a Spaceview?
Early Spaceview-style watches began as dealer display aids. Bulova removed the dial and used a printed crystal to show the tuning-fork movement. Accutron214.com’s Spaceview history says the Accutron 214 was introduced to the public in October 1960; Bulova later sold Spaceview models as well. A dial-free appearance alone therefore does not establish whether an individual watch was originally sold as a Spaceview or converted later.

Later Spaceviews used a metal minute scale, often called a chapter ring, beneath a crystal marked with the Accutron name and tuning-fork logo. The case and bezel construction matter: the specialist history says an ordinary dial bezel is not machined to accommodate a chapter ring under the crystal. Some examples without chapter rings could be converted with a suitable crystal and spacer ring. These distinctions are useful context, not a model-specific appraisal of the watch in this title.

Describe the watch as it exists, rather than inferring its history from its appearance. A useful account identifies the movement and separates observed details from what is documented by the owner, a watchmaker, or service records.

- Movement: Record the caliber only if it has been identified reliably. The Spaceview name does not by itself establish that the watch contains a 214.
- Changes: Specify what was altered—such as the crystal, spacer, chapter ring, case, or movement—only if that is known. Say who performed the work and when if those details are available.
- Originality and provenance: Note any receipts, service records, or prior-owner information. A dial-free layout is not proof of factory originality.
- Operation: Report observed behavior and the conditions under which it was observed. Do not imply a timing or performance test unless one was actually performed.
- Power: Record the installed battery type and voltage only after confirming them for the specific caliber and modification.
Battery choice depends on the actual movement
Accutron214.com’s 214 question-and-answer page describes a 1.5 V battery modified to reduce its output to 1.3 V as an option for a 214. That is a compatibility lead for that movement, not a universal recommendation for every Spaceview or custom build. Confirm the caliber, battery arrangement, and voltage requirements with a qualified watchmaker before fitting a cell; do not assume a modification uses the same specification as an unmodified 214.
The same specialist reference notes that repair parts may come from estate sales, retired watchmakers, or working donor movements. Parts access can therefore be a practical constraint. Ask a repairer to confirm availability for the specific movement and proposed work before authorizing a repair.

Plan service around vintage tuning-fork availability
Accutron’s official FAQ currently says: “Unfortunately, due to parts unavailability, we are currently unable to service Accutron tuning fork movements watches.” Its general direction to authorized service centers does not override that stated limitation for legacy tuning-fork movements. Service policy can change, so confirm eligibility directly before shipping a vintage watch.

Accutron’s US parts-and-repairs page describes an evaluation process at its Houston facility, with an estimate for chargeable work before work begins. It gives a typical completion time of 30–45 business days after estimate approval and payment, excluding transit. That timing applies to accepted work; it is not a promise that a vintage tuning-fork watch is eligible, given the FAQ’s current parts-related limitation.
Use the 214 service manual as a reference, not a repair guarantee
A scan of Bulova’s 214 service manual covers the basic 214 movement and identifies the indexing mechanism as particularly important. It is a technical service document, not evidence that a novice can safely perform movement repair. For a modified watch, first identify the caliber and have a suitably experienced watchmaker assess whether the alteration affects the repair procedure.

What the title does—and does not—establish
“Custom modified” signals that the watch has been changed, but it does not tell readers what was changed, whether the work is reversible, whether the watch is a factory chapter-ring Spaceview or a conversion, or how it runs. Those specifics must come from the owner’s account or supporting records. Without them, the most accurate description is a custom-modified Accutron Spaceview of as-yet-unspecified configuration.
