The Airain Type 20 x seconde/seconde/ “Up in the Air” is an 88-piece 2024 collaboration that pairs a traditional pilot’s flyback chronograph with pixel-art clouds and an Eiffel Tower detail. Airain’s July 2024 announcement listed a price of €3,450; its product page, accessed 7 October 2026, displays €3,650. That page does not establish whether any pieces remain in stock.
What is the Airain Type 20 “Up in the Air”?
Reference 427.406 is a limited-edition take on Airain’s Type 20 pilot chronograph, created with artist seconde/seconde/, identified by Airain as Romaric André. Its central design idea is to turn the recessed chronograph counters into airplane windows: rhodium-polished edges frame pixelated clouds, and the left counter includes the tip of the Eiffel Tower. Airain presents the tower as a nod to the model’s French aviation history.

The collaboration changes the dial’s visual language without replacing the Type 20’s functional layout. The matte-black dial has beige Super-LumiNova Arabic numerals, rhodium-polished hands, small seconds at 9 o’clock and a 30-minute recorder at 3. A bidirectional friction bezel carries a 12-hour countdown scale.
How much does it cost, and how many were made?
Airain announced the watch on 10 July 2024 and listed the price as €3,450. The current product page displays €3,650 and says listed prices include insured shipping, duties and taxes. These are two dated published prices, not evidence of a completed sale or a transaction price.

These are the specifications Airain publishes for this collaboration; they are not independent measurements or test results. The dimensions above are specific to reference 427.406 and should not be assumed to describe every Type 20 reference.

Airain says the Eiffel Tower detail reflects the Type 20’s French aviation heritage. The brand’s own history says the Dodane family founded Airain in 1934 and that it supplied Type 20 watches for the French Army in the 1950s and 1960s. Airain’s collection page describes the Type 20 as based on the original 1950s French military-pilot specification; those are the brand’s historical claims.
The broad Type 20 format also helps explain the watch’s combination of a chronograph and countdown bezel. The GPHG entry for Airain’s Type 20 re-edition describes those features as part of the wider re-edition, but it is not a specification sheet for this collaboration.

Airain’s announcement said the watch would be available from 14 July 2024 through the brand’s website and selected retailers. It scheduled delivery in two groups: the first 44 pieces for late August and the second 44 for September. The announcement did not specify a year for those delivery months in the sentence, but its July 2024 launch context places them in the announced release schedule.
Airain’s product page currently displays a price, but the available published information does not verify remaining stock. Check Airain or a retailer directly for current availability rather than treating the price display as confirmation.
What did Airain say about the collaboration?
Tom van Wijlick, identified in Airain’s launch announcement as CEO of CDMLEC, said: “I wanted our ‘Up in the Air’ Type 20 to be a conversation starter without reducing its iconic identity. I believe Romaric has done an outstanding job in not only emphasising its aeronautical legacy, but also aptly honouring its French origins.”
