By 2021, U.S.-based architect Chris Culver had built a collection approaching 200 Audi watches, spanning everyday quartz models, mechanical watches and unusual designs tied to the carmaker. Its standout is a Heuer Audi Sport chronograph, a scarce 1980s model that a 2021 Fratello profile said was known in fewer than 100 examples—a reported estimate, not an official production figure or current census.
How Chris Culver started collecting Audi watches
Culver told Tomas Rosputinsky of Fratello that the hobby began after he modified his Audi S4 and felt there was little left to add to the car. He turned to watches instead; the feature says he bought his first Audi watch in 2016. By the time of the September 2, 2021 profile, its headline described his collection as almost 200 watches, while the narrative recalled that he had reached around 150 and then slowed his buying. These are different points in the collection’s timeline, not competing exact counts. Fratello’s 2021 profile also notes that the collection had not yet been properly catalogued.
The Heuer Audi Sport Ref. 510.533
The centerpiece highlighted by the profile is the Heuer Audi Sport Ref. 510.533, a chronograph associated with Audi Sport. Rosputinsky reported that fewer than 100 were known to exist when he wrote in 2021. That figure describes the author’s estimate of known examples at that time; it is not a confirmed production total, and the available sources do not establish a current census or current market availability.
Commissioning and availability
According to the Fratello feature, Audi Sport U.K. and David Sutton Motorsport Ltd. commissioned the watch. The author said it was available only in the UK and sold for around two months in the 1980s, based on the information available to him. These historical details are attributed to that feature; they should not be mistaken for an independently confirmed production record.

Dial variants and movement
The profile describes two dial versions. Culver’s example lacked half-hour increments on the 12-hour counter. It also says the watch used a modified Lemania Cal. 5100: the 24-hour register and day window were removed to make room for Audi Sport branding. That combination of recognizable Heuer chronograph architecture and marque-specific changes is what makes the model especially distinctive within Culver’s collection.
A collection spanning quartz and mechanical watches
The collection is not made up solely of rare mechanical chronographs. Rosputinsky estimated that it included around 30 automatic watches and 10 manual-wound watches, with the remainder quartz. Those figures were the author’s estimate in 2021, when Culver had not yet properly catalogued the watches, rather than a definitive inventory.

The examples in the feature show how broadly Audi branding has been applied to watches. They include an Audi red-dot date watch, a Glashütte PanoGraph-inspired design, a “ghost” dial, a police-themed watch, an Audi radiator watch, an “Old England” steering-wheel watch and an automatic day/date model with an unusual power-reserve display. Some origin stories and design interpretations in the profile are Culver’s recollections or Rosputinsky’s descriptions, so they are best treated with that attribution rather than as established factory history.
Audi’s official catalogue separately lists Audi-branded watches, including chronographs, an automatic watch and Audi Sport models. It confirms that Audi watches are a real product category, but it does not establish the provenance, production numbers or original availability of the vintage watches in Culver’s collection.

What makes the collection interesting to watch enthusiasts
The appeal is in the range: a collector can find Audi’s visual identity expressed through straightforward quartz watches, mechanical complications and designs that echo automotive details. The Heuer Audi Sport offers the strongest link between a recognizable watchmaker, motorsport branding and a modified movement; the steering-wheel and radiator watches take a more literal approach to car design. The collection also illustrates why an automotive logo alone does not tell a buyer much about a watch’s movement, condition or history.
- Design and complication: Compare the dial, case and functions, from date displays to chronographs and unusual power-reserve indicators.
- Movement: The featured collection includes automatic, manual-wound and quartz examples; the movement type is a practical distinction, not a measure of authenticity or quality by itself.
- Condition and serviceability: Mechanical watches may need repairs or parts. Culver described having a GWC watch repaired after a tiny spring came loose: “When I bought this watch, it was not working due to a tiny spring that came loose. I hunted down the company that bought the original GWC and sent the watch off to them. They had a spare part and it now works great.” Rosputinsky quoted him in the 2021 feature.
- Provenance and authenticity: Look for credible documentation and consistency between the specific watch and claims about its origin. The Fratello profile warns that steering-wheel-watch fakes may lack “Old England” at the bottom of the dial, but it does not provide a standardized authentication procedure.
- Scarcity: Treat rarity claims as attributed estimates unless supported by production records or a current, documented census. The Heuer estimate in the 2021 article is not an official total.
Finding Audi watches today
Audi’s official catalogue is a useful place to see the branded-watch category, while older, unusual or discontinued models may require searching the vintage market. Neither the Fratello profile nor Audi’s catalogue establishes current availability or pricing for the specific vintage examples described here. Marketplace listings can differ in condition, completeness and authenticity; a listing’s Audi or Audi Sport branding alone does not verify its history. For a rare model such as the Heuer, seek clear photographs, movement and reference details, service information and evidence supporting the seller’s provenance claims before making a purchase.
