Choose AirPods 4 if you dislike silicone tips and want the least expensive open-fit option. Choose AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation if you want an open fit with ANC. Buy AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C only when it is substantially cheaper than Pro 3, and choose AirPods Max with USB-C only if you specifically want over-ear headphones.
The key decision is not the number of features on the box. It is whether you want an open earbud, a sealed silicone-tip earbud, or a full-size over-ear headphone. Fit determines comfort, stability, passive isolation, and how consistently ANC works.
AirPods at a glance
| Model | Fit | Noise control | Best for | Fall 2025 price context | Battery headline |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AirPods Pro 3 | In-ear silicone tips; five sizes, XXS through L | ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency | Best overall for iPhone owners, commuters, exercisers, and buyers wanting the newest feature set | $249 U.S. starting price at launch | Up to 8 hours with ANC; up to 24 hours with the case |
| AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation | Open fit; no silicone seal | ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency | People who want ANC but dislike sealed ear tips | Verify Fall 2025 retailer pricing; $179 was an August 2026 storefront reference, not a historical Fall 2025 price | Battery life varies by listening mode and configuration |
| AirPods 4 | Open fit; no silicone seal | No ANC | Best value, lightness, ventilation, and simple everyday listening | Verify Fall 2025 retailer pricing; $129 was an August 2026 storefront reference, not a historical Fall 2025 price | Up to 5 hours per charge; up to 30 hours with the case |
| AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C | In-ear silicone tips | ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency | Discounted in-ear ANC and hearing features | Buy when clearly below the Pro 3 launch price; discount and inventory dependent | Up to 6 hours with ANC; up to 30 hours with the case |
| AirPods Max with USB-C | Over-ear | ANC and Transparency | Listeners who prefer full-size headphones and wired USB-C audio | Period and retailer dependent; do not confuse with the later Max 2 | Up to 20 hours with ANC |
Important price warning: The AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with ANC, and AirPods Pro 3 prices shown in some current storefronts were verified in August 2026. They should not be silently treated as historical Fall 2025 prices. Retailer discounts, regional taxes, stock, and model-specific charging cases can change the checkout price.

Best overall for Fall 2025: AirPods Pro 3
AirPods Pro 3 are the easiest recommendation for an iPhone owner who wants one pair to handle commuting, travel, calls, exercise, music, and Apple’s newest software features. The sealed in-ear design gives you a more stable physical fit and more passive isolation than an open AirPods 4 design, while five included ear-tip sizes—XXS, XS, S, M, and L—make it more likely that you can find a workable seal.
#1 Best Overall
- ULTIMATE OVER-EAR LISTENING EXPERIENCE — Apple-designed dynamic driver provides high-fidelity audio. Computational audio combines custom acoustic design with the Apple H1 chip and software for breakthrough listening experiences.
- FIVE FRESH COLORS — AirPods Max come in five fresh colors: Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Purple, and Orange. A color-matched Smart Case is also included.
- FOCUS ON WHAT’S PLAYING — Pro-level Active Noise Cancellation removes up to 2x more background noise, so you can immerse yourself in music.*
- HEAR THE WORLD AROUND YOU — Transparency mode lets you comfortably hear and interact with the world around you.
- PERSONALIZED SPATIAL AUDIO — With sound that suits your unique ear shape along with dynamic head tracking, AirPods Max deliver an immersive listening experience that places sound all around you.* You can also listen to select songs, shows, and movies in Dolby Atmos.
The feature set includes the H2 chip, ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, hearing-health features, a heart-rate sensor for workouts, and support for more than 50 workout types through the Fitness experience on iPhone. The heart-rate sensor is a useful reason to choose Pro 3 over an older discounted Pro model if you want AirPods involved in workout tracking, but it should not be treated as a replacement for dedicated medical or fitness equipment.
Apple says Pro 3 provides up to twice as much ANC as the previous-generation AirPods Pro and up to four times as much as the original AirPods Pro. Those are Apple’s comparative claims under its stated conditions, not independent laboratory measurements, so do not treat them as a universal ranking against every competing earbud.
Apple rates the Pro 3 earbuds and case to IP57 under controlled laboratory conditions. That is useful protection against dust and water exposure, but resistance is not permanent. Dry the case and earbuds before charging, and never charge them while wet. The case supports MagSafe, Qi-certified, Apple Watch, and USB-C charging, and includes a speaker for Find My. The USB-C charging cable is sold separately.
Apple rates Pro 3 for up to eight hours of listening with ANC enabled, or up to 24 hours with the charging case. Actual endurance changes with volume, software, listening modes, environmental conditions, and other test variables. Pro 3 also supports Live Translation, but availability depends on compatible hardware, software, language, region, and device settings.
Who should not buy Pro 3?
Do not choose Pro 3 simply because it has the longest feature list. If silicone tips make your ears sore, if you need to hear your surroundings continuously, or if you strongly prefer the sensation of an open earbud, AirPods 4 may be more comfortable. A comfortable AirPods 4 that you wear all day is a better purchase than a feature-rich Pro 3 that you remove after an hour.
Best value and best open-fit choice: AirPods 4
AirPods 4 are the sensible choice for readers who dislike silicone ear tips, want a light open design, or do not need active noise cancellation. They use the H2 chip, USB-C charging, Bluetooth 5.3, Voice Isolation, Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, and Adaptive EQ. Apple rates the earbuds and case IP54 for dust, sweat, and water resistance.
Rank #2
- ULTIMATE OVER-EAR LISTENING EXPERIENCE—Powered by the H2 chip, AirPods Max 2 delivers improved high-fidelity audio with deep bass, expansive mids, and crisp highs for an unparalleled listening experience.
- TUNE OUT THE NOISE—Up to 1.5x more Active Noise Cancellation than the previous generation, fully immersing you in every sound.*
- HEAR THE WORLD AROUND YOU—Adaptive Audio automatically adjusts noise cancellation levels to suit your environment. Conversation Awareness lowers the volume of what’s playing to make it easy to talk to those around you.* And Transparency lets outside sounds in so you can interact with your surroundings.
- PERSONALIZED SPATIAL AUDIO—With sound tuned to your unique ear shape and dynamic head tracking, AirPods Max 2 delivers an immersive listening experience that surrounds you with theater-like sound.
- COMMUNICATE ACROSS LANGUAGES—Simply press and hold the listening mode button to activate Live Translation powered by Apple Intelligence,* which automatically translates the language someone is speaking into your preferred language.
The open fit is the defining feature. There is no silicone tip sealing the ear canal, which can feel more ventilated and less intrusive than AirPods Pro. The trade-off is that the earbuds do not provide the same passive isolation as the Pro models. Outside sound remains easier to hear, and the fit can be more dependent on individual ear shape and movement.

Battery life is rated at up to five hours per charge and up to 30 hours with the case. The charging case uses USB-C, but Apple lists the USB-C cable as sold separately. Standard AirPods 4 do not give you the ANC, Adaptive Audio, or Transparency modes found on the ANC version.
Buy AirPods 4 when your priorities are comfort without a seal, low weight, straightforward Apple-device integration, and value. Do not buy them expecting commuting noise to disappear or expecting the open design to stay equally secure in every ear during exercise.
Best open-fit option with ANC: AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation
AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation are for the buyer caught between two preferences: wanting the openness of ordinary AirPods and wanting some control over background noise. They retain the non-sealing design but add ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, and a force sensor. Their charging case includes a speaker, which can make it easier to locate with Find My, and Apple rates the earbuds and case IP54.
This is a particularly appealing design for offices, cafés, public transport, and travel when silicone tips are uncomfortable. However, ANC performance depends more heavily on ear shape and environmental leakage when the earbud does not form a sealed in-ear fit. That is a design-based expectation, not an independent laboratory ranking: an open-fit ANC earbud cannot block sound in exactly the same way as a well-sealed Pro earbud.
Do not compare its battery headline casually with the standard AirPods 4 or Pro 3. Battery life changes according to whether ANC, Transparency, or other listening modes are active, and Apple’s configuration-specific figures should be checked at purchase. The case charges over USB-C. As with the standard model, the deciding question is whether the open fit is worth the compromise in isolation and consistency.

Best discounted in-ear alternative: AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C
AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C remain relevant in Fall 2025 when a retailer discounts them substantially below the Pro 3’s $249 launch price. They use the H2 chip and offer Pro-level ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, Personalized Volume, and hearing-related features. Apple rates them for up to six hours of listening per charge with ANC and up to 30 hours with the case.
The charging case supports MagSafe, Qi, Apple Watch, and USB-C charging. The earbuds and case carry an IP54 rating. Pro 2 has a mature feature set and may be the better value if the price gap is large, but it is the prior-generation option once Pro 3 is available. It does not have Pro 3’s heart-rate sensing, redesigned fit, five-tip XXS-through-L range, or Pro 3’s stated battery rating.
Pro 2 is a good purchase when you prefer a sealed in-ear fit and find a genuine clearance or retailer discount. It is a poor purchase when the price is close to Pro 3, when you specifically want workout heart-rate sensing, or when the listing does not clearly identify the USB-C configuration.

AirPods Pro 2 USB-C versus Lightning
Check the exact retail configuration before paying. AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C and AirPods Pro 2 with Lightning are not interchangeable product listings merely because both are called AirPods Pro 2. For a current purchase, the USB-C version is the safer choice if you want to consolidate charging cables and avoid buying an older Lightning case. Exact case contents, charging support, and retailer stock should be confirmed on the product page.
Best over-ear option: AirPods Max with USB-C
AirPods Max with USB-C are the right choice only if you specifically want over-ear headphones rather than earbuds. The model available during Fall 2025 was the USB-C version introduced in 2024, not AirPods Max 2. It came in five colors and offered ANC, Transparency mode, Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Adaptive EQ, Bluetooth 5.3, and USB-C charging.
Apple rates AirPods Max for up to 20 hours of listening with ANC enabled. Their major differentiator is wired USB-C listening: with compatible content and services, Apple documents lossless and ultra-low-latency audio over a USB-C connection. That makes Max more interesting for certain editing, gaming, or focused listening setups than an earbud-only product.

- ULTIMATE OVER-EAR LISTENING EXPERIENCE — Apple-designed dynamic driver provides high-fidelity audio. Computational audio combines custom acoustic design with the Apple H1 chip and software for breakthrough listening experiences.

The trade-offs are physical. AirPods Max are substantially larger and heavier than AirPods or AirPods Pro, take up more space, and are less convenient for exercise or pocket carry. Buy them for over-ear comfort, a larger headphone presentation, and wired USB-C capability—not because they are a better value than Pro 3 for ordinary commuting.

- You want full-size headphones: Choose AirPods Max with USB-C. Confirm that the listing is the 2024 USB-C model if you are making a Fall 2025 comparison.
- You dislike silicone tips: Choose AirPods 4. If you also need ANC, choose AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and accept that open-fit ANC is more dependent on ear shape and leakage.
- You want the most secure, isolated earbud fit: Choose AirPods Pro 3. Start with the smallest comfortable tip and use the fit process rather than assuming the medium tip is correct.
- You want in-ear ANC but have a strict budget: Compare the exact price of AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C against Pro 3. Pro 2 makes sense when the discount is meaningful; otherwise, the newer model is easier to justify.
- You mainly want inexpensive everyday AirPods: Choose standard AirPods 4 if ANC is not important. Their open design is the reason to buy them, not a substitute for Pro-level isolation.
- You are buying for hearing or health functions: Check eligibility and regional availability before purchase. Features such as Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, Hearing Protection, heart-rate sensing, Live Translation, and some Siri functions depend on hardware, firmware, operating-system versions, age, region, language, and compatible apps.
Hearing features: useful, but not a reason to skip the requirements
AirPods Pro hearing features should be treated as conditional capabilities, not universal medical benefits. Apple states that Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features are intended for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss and require compatible Apple hardware, current firmware, and supported operating systems. Availability also varies by geography.
Hearing Protection is not a substitute for hearing protection designed for dangerous environments. Apple’s documentation warns that the feature is not suitable protection against gunfire, fireworks, jackhammers, or sustained sounds above 110 dBA. If you are exposed to those sounds, use appropriate certified protective equipment.
Similarly, Pro 3’s heart-rate sensor can support workout tracking through compatible Apple experiences, but it is not a diagnosis tool. Live Translation is also not a universal offline feature; language, region, software, device, and account requirements can determine whether it works.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to confuse before checkout
- AirPods 4 versus AirPods 4 with ANC: Both are open-fit earbuds, but only the ANC version adds Active Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Conversation Awareness, and a speaker-equipped case.
- AirPods Pro 2 USB-C versus Lightning: Check the case connector and exact retail configuration. Search for the USB-C model by its complete name rather than relying on a generic Pro 2 listing.
- AirPods Max with USB-C versus AirPods Max 2: The Fall 2025 Max was the 2024 USB-C model. AirPods Max 2 was introduced on March 16, 2026, after the guide’s shopping period, so it does not belong in the Fall 2025 recommendation table.
- Water resistance versus waterproofing: IP54 and IP57 ratings come from controlled laboratory testing and do not make the products permanently water-resistant. Do not charge wet earbuds or a wet case.
- Battery claims versus daily use: Apple’s figures are controlled test claims involving factors such as volume, paired devices, software, and playback material. ANC, calls, spatial audio, temperature, and other settings can reduce real-world endurance.
Useful accessories and replacement parts
Accessories matter most when they solve a specific ownership problem. For Pro models, buy replacement AirPods Pro ear tips only after confirming the exact generation and compatibility. For a lost or damaged case, an AirPods charging case must match the specific earbud model; cases are not universal across the AirPods family. A USB-C charging cable for AirPods is a practical add-on because Apple lists the cable as sold separately for AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3. Check connector, charging standard, and certification claims rather than assuming every third-party accessory is Apple-certified.

AirPods Pro 3 was the major new product for the Fall 2025 decision. Later, on March 16, 2026, Apple introduced AirPods Max 2. Because Max 2 arrived after the stated shopping period, it should not be used to rewrite the Fall 2025 answer or to describe the 2024 USB-C AirPods Max as Max 2. Max 2 is a separate product with H2 and other changes.
For orientation, an Apple storefront check performed on August 12, 2026 showed AirPods 4 at $129, AirPods 4 with ANC at $179, AirPods Pro 3 at $249, and AirPods Max 2 at $549. Those later storefront values are useful only for understanding the date of the research; they are not historical Fall 2025 prices, and Max 2’s price is not a price for the Fall 2025 AirPods Max.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are AirPods 4 with ANC sealed like AirPods Pro?
No. AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation use an open-fit design without silicone tips. They can provide ANC, but their noise reduction and stability are more dependent on ear shape and sound leakage than those of the sealed AirPods Pro models.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Are AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C still worth buying in Fall 2025?
Yes, if they are substantially discounted below the $249 AirPods Pro 3 launch price and you want in-ear ANC, H2-based features, and hearing functions. Pro 2 is harder to justify when its price is close to Pro 3 or when you want Pro 3’s heart-rate sensing and newer fit.
Do AirPods Pro hearing features replace hearing protection or medical care?
No. Hearing features have hardware, firmware, operating-system, age, and regional requirements. Hearing Protection is not intended for gunfire, fireworks, jackhammers, or sustained sounds above 110 dBA, and AirPods should not replace professional advice or certified protective equipment.
Are AirPods Max 2 part of the Fall 2025 buying guide?
No. AirPods Max 2 was introduced on March 16, 2026, after the Fall 2025 shopping period. The relevant over-ear model for Fall 2025 is AirPods Max with USB-C, the 2024 model.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy AirPods Pro 3 for the best all-around Fall 2025 package, AirPods 4 for open-fit value, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation for open-fit ANC, discounted AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C for in-ear value, and AirPods Max with USB-C only if you specifically want over-ear headphones. Fit should decide the category before features or price.
