Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 Review: A Real Upgrade for Athletes, but Not Everyone

The Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 are a meaningful fitness upgrade over the original Powerbeats Pro, adding ANC, heart-rate monitoring, wireless charging, USB-C, a smaller case, and longer battery life. But IPX4 durability, wind-sensitive calls, no graphic EQ, and merely very good—not class-leading—sound and ANC keep them from being an automatic upgrade for everyone.

Yes—the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 are a real upgrade over the original 2019 Powerbeats Pro. They add active noise cancellation (ANC), Transparency mode, in-ear heart-rate monitoring, wireless charging, a smaller case, USB-C, the Apple H2 chip, improved microphones, and substantially longer claimed battery life.

But they are not an automatic upgrade for every owner. Their biggest gains are in fitness features and everyday convenience, not necessarily in sound quality, water resistance, or call performance. The Powerbeats Pro 2 make the most sense for runners, gym users, cyclists, and anyone who values a secure earhook design, physical controls, long battery life, and workout-focused tracking.

The short verdict

The Powerbeats Pro 2 are a meaningful fitness upgrade, not a complete reinvention of the Powerbeats formula. The familiar over-ear hooks remain, but Beats adds the features the original model was missing most: ANC, Transparency mode, heart-rate monitoring, wireless charging, USB-C, and a smaller charging case.

Battery life is another major strength. Beats rates the earbuds for up to 10 hours each with Adaptive EQ and up to 45 hours with the case. Using ANC or Transparency mode lowers those figures to up to 8 hours per earbud and 36 hours total—still excellent for workout earbuds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The compromises are equally clear. The earbuds remain only IPX4-rated, there is no user-adjustable graphic equalizer, wind can affect call quality, and the sound and ANC do not universally surpass the best alternatives. Owners of the Original Powerbeats Pro who are happy with the fit, battery, and passive isolation can reasonably keep their current pair.

Our verdict: upgrade if you want modern noise control, heart-rate tracking, wireless charging, and better day-to-day convenience. Keep the original or consider another model if your priority is audiophile sound, maximum water protection, compactness, or the strongest possible call and ANC performance.

What is new compared with the original Powerbeats Pro?

Feature Original Powerbeats Pro Powerbeats Pro 2
Active noise cancellation Not available Included
Transparency mode Not available Included
Heart-rate monitoring Not available In-ear sensors included
Charging connector Lightning USB-C
Wireless charging Not available Qi-certified wireless charging
Claimed battery life Shorter than Pro 2 Up to 10 hours per earbud, 45 hours total with Adaptive EQ
Charging case Larger original case Redesigned case, claimed 33% smaller
Ear tips Fewer sizing options Five sizes, from extra-small through extra-large
Processor Older platform Apple H2 chip

The design still revolves around the same basic idea: an earbud is held in place by a flexible hook around the ear rather than relying only on friction inside the ear canal. That makes the Pro 2 a specialized product rather than a direct replacement for compact stem-style earbuds.

Fit and comfort: the reason to buy them

The over-ear hook is the Powerbeats Pro 2’s defining advantage. During running, strength training, cycling, or other movement-heavy activities, the hooks provide a level of physical security that many conventional earbuds cannot match. Independent testing found the fit particularly secure for exercise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

They are also a useful alternative to earbuds with fixed wingtip supports. A wingtip can press against one concentrated area of the outer ear, while the flexible Powerbeats hook distributes some of that retention differently. That does not make the Powerbeats universally more comfortable—ear shape and hook tolerance vary—but it gives buyers another fit system to consider.

Beats includes five ear-tip sizes: extra-small, small, medium, large, and extra-large. Do not assume the preinstalled medium tip is correct. The best size for sound isolation may not be the best size for heart-rate sensor contact, and a poor seal can affect comfort, bass response, ANC, and Transparency performance.

How to get the best fit

  1. Try all five ear-tip sizes, beginning with the size that seals without creating excessive pressure.
  2. With the earbuds fitted, move your jaw and walk or jog briefly to check whether the seal remains stable.
  3. Compare both comfort and outside-noise reduction. A tip that feels secure but leaks sound is not correctly sealing.
  4. If heart-rate readings are inconsistent, test the other sizes again. Sensor-to-skin contact matters as much as general stability.
  5. Clean the earbuds and sensor areas according to Apple or Beats care guidance before diagnosing a fit problem.

Replacement tips may be useful for lost or worn pieces, but verify that any third-party option is specifically compatible with Powerbeats Pro 2 before buying. An incorrectly shaped tip can undermine both acoustic sealing and sensor contact.

ANC and Transparency mode

ANC is the largest everyday usability improvement over the original model. The first Powerbeats Pro relied on passive isolation; the Pro 2 can actively reduce external sound. That makes them more practical in a noisy gym, office, airport, or city street.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Independent testing measured an average reduction of about 83% in external-noise loudness and found the ANC effective against gym and street noise. Another test characterized ANC as a major improvement over the original Powerbeats Pro and particularly effective at blocking environmental noise.

Transparency mode provides the opposite behavior, allowing outside sound through so users can hear announcements, conversations, or surrounding activity without removing the earbuds. Testing described it as natural-sounding.

There is an important qualification: effective ANC is not the same as best-in-class ANC. Some competing earbuds offer more advanced noise reduction, better wind handling, or broader customization. The Powerbeats Pro 2 deliver very good noise control for sport-oriented earbuds, but buyers should not purchase them expecting an automatic class-leading result in every environment.

Sound quality

The tuning is energetic and workout-friendly, with elevated bass and treble. That profile suits exercise playlists, pop, electronic music, hip-hop, and other recordings that benefit from a lively presentation. Podcasts and spoken content should also be easy to follow, particularly with ANC enabled in noisy surroundings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Testing found the earbuds generally sounded better with ANC enabled than disabled and gave the ANC-on presentation a strong simulated listener score. However, the same testing did not place the sound at the top of the entire wireless-earbud market.

The more significant limitation for some listeners is customization. The Powerbeats Pro 2 do not provide a user-adjustable graphic equalizer. If you want to substantially reduce the bass, change the treble, or create multiple detailed sound profiles, an app-based competitor such as the Sennheiser MOMENTUM Sport may be more flexible.

In practical terms, the Pro 2 sound good for their intended audience, but they are not the clearest choice for someone buying primarily for critical listening. Their strongest case is the combination of secure fit, noise control, battery life, and controls—not a claim of class-leading tonal refinement.

Heart-rate monitoring: useful, but not a watch replacement

Heart-rate monitoring is the most unusual new feature. Sensors inside the earbuds can collect heart-rate data during compatible workouts, allowing the Pro 2 to function as a workout input rather than merely an audio accessory.

On iPhone, compatible workouts and Apple Health or Fitness workflows can display the data. Compatible third-party workout apps can also read the data through Apple’s HealthKit system. If an Apple Watch or another heart-rate monitor is connected at the same time, Apple says the higher-confidence source may be prioritized.

Android users can use the Beats app to enable heart-rate sharing with compatible third-party workout apps or exercise equipment. The experience is therefore platform-supported, but it is not identical across every Android phone, app, treadmill, bike, or gym machine. Check the specific app or equipment’s compatibility before buying for this feature.

Heart-rate readings also depend on fit. Apple notes that sensor-to-skin contact affects results, and the most acoustically comfortable ear tip may not produce the best sensor contact. The earbuds should not be presented as a medical device or as a guaranteed replacement for a dedicated sports watch or chest strap.

For athletes who already use a phone-based workout app and want basic live heart-rate information without wearing a watch, the feature is potentially valuable. For serious training, compare the results with the monitor you already trust rather than assuming the earbuds are automatically the most accurate source.

Battery life and charging

Battery life is one of the Powerbeats Pro 2’s strongest advantages. Beats claims:

  • Up to 10 hours per earbud with Adaptive EQ.
  • Up to 45 hours total with the charging case and Adaptive EQ.
  • Up to 8 hours per earbud with ANC or Transparency enabled.
  • Up to 36 hours total with ANC or Transparency enabled.
  • Up to 1.5 hours of playback after a five-minute charge in Adaptive EQ mode.

Those are laboratory-style maximum claims, not guarantees for every listener. Volume, ANC use, connection behavior, environmental conditions, calls, firmware, and other settings affect actual runtime. Independent testing nevertheless found the long battery life broadly credible.

The case is now 33% smaller according to Beats, making it less inconvenient to carry than the original case. It also supports both USB-C and Qi-certified wireless charging. USB-C is a practical improvement for anyone who has already standardized on that cable, while Qi charging is useful if a charging pad is already part of the user’s desk or bedside setup.

A Qi wireless charging pad can take advantage of the case’s charging feature, but the earbuds do not require a proprietary Beats charger. The pad simply needs to support Qi charging and be positioned correctly.

Controls, calls, and connectivity

The physical controls remain a strong point. The earbuds retain tactile buttons and add dedicated volume rockers, so users can control playback and volume without tapping a tiny touch surface or reaching for a phone. That is particularly useful during exercise, when wet fingers or gloves can make touch controls unreliable.

Each earbud has three microphones and a voice accelerometer. Calls are generally workable, but independent testing found microphone performance can vary depending on the paired device. Wind is a particular weakness, and processing reportedly works best when the earbuds are paired with an iPhone or another Apple device.

The secure fit minimizes slippage and maximizes comfort, while universal Bluetooth compatibility allows these ear buds to seamlessly pair with smartphones, tablets, and laptops, providing a smooth audio experience across all devices.

With a sweat-resistant and dust-resistant build, they are prepared to support your workouts, outdoor runs, or busy commutes without slowing you down. Durable, secure, and convenient, these bluetooth headphones are an excellent companion for people who need reliable audio that keeps pace with their active routine.

Android compatibility is not an afterthought. The Beats app supports pairing, settings, firmware updates, and heart-rate controls. However, the deepest integration remains on Apple devices, especially for Health, Fitness, Siri, automatic device behavior, and other ecosystem features.

Some newer functions, including workout integration and head gestures, depend on current firmware and current Apple operating-system versions. Owners of older phones should check Apple’s current support requirements rather than assuming every feature will work on every device or in every region.

Durability: sweat-resistant, not waterproof

The Powerbeats Pro 2 carry an IPX4 rating. That means they are designed to resist water splashes and sweat under ordinary use, but they should not be called waterproof or treated as suitable for submersion.

IPX4 may be adequate for indoor workouts and ordinary running conditions, but buyers who regularly train in heavy rain, work around water, or want greater protection should consider earbuds with a higher ingress-protection rating. Dry the earbuds after sweaty sessions and follow the manufacturer’s care instructions; an IP rating does not eliminate the need for maintenance.

Powerbeats Pro 2 versus the alternatives

Original Powerbeats Pro

The Pro 2 are the obvious choice if you want ANC, Transparency mode, heart-rate tracking, wireless charging, USB-C, a smaller case, or longer claimed battery life. If the original model still fits well and its battery remains sufficient, an immediate upgrade is less compelling unless one of those specific features matters.

Beats Fit Pro

The Beats Fit Pro use a smaller in-ear wingtip approach rather than a flexible over-ear hook. The Pro 2 offer longer battery life and, according to independent testing, stronger ANC for many users. The hook may also avoid the concentrated pressure some people experience with wingtip earbuds. Fit is personal, so this is a case where trying both designs matters more than comparing specifications alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AirPods Pro 2

AirPods Pro 2 are the better match for buyers who prioritize compactness, polished everyday ANC, and deep Apple ecosystem integration. The Powerbeats Pro 2 are more compelling when staying secure during running or other movement-heavy activities is the primary requirement.

Sennheiser MOMENTUM Sport

The MOMENTUM Sport is a relevant fitness competitor because it also offers heart-rate monitoring, higher water resistance, and app-based equalization. It may appeal more to buyers who want sound customization or greater protection, although the cited reviews list it at a higher MSRP than the Powerbeats Pro 2.

Lower-cost workout earbuds

Less expensive models can provide a secure fit and acceptable battery life. They generally do not combine the Pro 2’s ANC, heart-rate monitoring, wireless charging, Apple H2 platform, and physical volume controls in one product. If you only need stable playback for workouts, a cheaper pair may still be better value.

Who should upgrade?

Upgrade from the original Powerbeats Pro if you:

  • Exercise regularly and want a more modern feature set.
  • Want ANC for gyms, commuting, offices, or travel.
  • Need Transparency mode when you must hear your surroundings.
  • Want heart-rate data in compatible Apple or Android workout workflows.
  • Prefer wireless charging and USB-C.
  • Want a smaller case and longer claimed battery life.
  • Like the security of earhooks but want better everyday versatility.

Keep the original or choose another model if you:

  • Mainly want a major sound-quality upgrade.
  • Need stronger water protection than IPX4.
  • Dislike over-ear hooks or prefer a very compact earbud.
  • Require a graphic equalizer and extensive sound customization.
  • Expect the absolute best ANC or wind-resistant call quality.
  • Already have a reliable heart-rate monitor and do not need another sensor.

Price and value

The official U.S. Beats listing cited for this review shows a price of $249.99. Retail prices can change, and temporary discounts may make the upgrade more attractive, so treat that figure as the listed U.S. price rather than a guaranteed current street price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At full price, the Powerbeats Pro 2 are easiest to justify when the buyer will use several of their distinguishing features: the secure hook, long battery life, ANC, heart-rate tracking, wireless charging, and physical controls. They are harder to justify as a pure audio upgrade or as a general-purpose earbud for someone who rarely exercises.

If you are ready to buy, check the current listing for the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 and compare the live price before checkout. The product’s value depends heavily on whether you will actually use its fitness hardware and hook-based fit.

Final review

The Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 solve most of the original Powerbeats Pro’s most obvious omissions. ANC and Transparency mode make them useful beyond the gym. Heart-rate monitoring adds a genuine fitness function. USB-C, Qi wireless charging, the smaller case, tactile volume controls, and longer battery life improve daily ownership.

They do not solve every limitation. IPX4 is merely adequate, wind can compromise calls, the sound is energetic rather than maximally refined, and the lack of a graphic equalizer limits personalization. The earhook design is excellent for some athletes and uncomfortable for others.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes the honest verdict straightforward: the Powerbeats Pro 2 are a substantial capability upgrade and one of the more convincing choices for athletes who want secure earbuds with modern features. They are not a mandatory purchase for every original-owner, and they are not the best choice for buyers who care more about compactness, maximum water resistance, audiophile tuning, or class-leading calls than workout stability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 worth upgrading from the original Powerbeats Pro?

They are worth upgrading if you want ANC, Transparency mode, heart-rate monitoring, wireless charging, USB-C, a smaller case, or longer battery life. If the original Powerbeats Pro still fits well and meets your battery needs, the upgrade is less urgent.

Are the Powerbeats Pro 2 waterproof?

No. They are IPX4-rated, meaning sweat- and splash-resistant under ordinary conditions. They should not be submerged or marketed as waterproof.

Do Powerbeats Pro 2 measure heart rate on Android?

Yes, but the workflow differs from iPhone. Android users need the Beats app and must enable sharing with compatible third-party workout apps or equipment. Compatibility is not universal across every app or machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Powerbeats Pro 2 replace an Apple Watch or chest strap?

They can provide useful workout heart-rate data, but they should not automatically be treated as a replacement for a dedicated sports watch or chest strap. Fit, sensor contact, software, and the specific workout all affect readings.

Do Powerbeats Pro 2 have an equalizer?

They do not include a user-adjustable graphic equalizer. Buyers who want detailed sound customization should consider an alternative with a more advanced companion app.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 are a real upgrade where it matters most for athletes: stability, noise control, workout data, charging, and battery life. They are an excellent fit for movement-heavy use, but not an automatic upgrade for every original owner or the strongest choice for audiophile sound, maximum water resistance, or best-in-class calls.
