AirPods Pro 2 offer three distinct hearing functions: Hearing Protection reduces some environmental noise, Hearing Test estimates hearing thresholds and creates an audiogram, and Hearing Aid personalizes amplification for eligible adults with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss. They require compatible Apple hardware and current software, and availability varies by region. Hearing Protection has important limits and is not a substitute for appropriate protection against hazardous noise.
The three hearing-health features in AirPods Pro 2
These functions serve different purposes and should not be conflated. Apple also offers Media Assist, a separate feature for adjusting media and calls.
1. Hearing Test: an at-home hearing assessment
The Hearing Test is a pure-tone assessment that takes about five minutes with AirPods Pro 2 and a compatible iPhone or iPad. Take it in a quiet environment with a secure ear-tip seal. It checks tones across frequencies and provides hearing levels, a classification and recommendations, including an audiogram that can be shared or exported.
Use the result as information, not as a universal medical diagnosis or a reason to delay care. Concerning results or symptoms such as sudden or one-sided hearing changes, pain, drainage, dizziness, or persistent tinnitus warrant professional medical advice. Apple explains the features in its Hearing Health Features guide.

2. Hearing Aid: personalized amplification for some adults
Hearing Aid uses a Hearing Test result or an audiogram from a hearing-care professional to personalize sound. Apple describes it as intended for adults aged 18 or older with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss. Environmental-sound amplification works in Transparency mode; users can adjust amplification, balance, tone, and Conversation Boost.
In the United States, the FDA authorized Apple’s Hearing Aid Feature software on September 12, 2024, as an over-the-counter hearing-aid software device for compatible AirPods Pro. That U.S. authorization should not be taken to mean the feature has the same regulatory status or availability everywhere. It is not a universal replacement for prescription hearing aids or professional care. See the FDA authorization notice.
3. Hearing Protection: reducing some environmental noise
Hearing Protection combines the fit and passive noise reduction of the earbuds with active processing. Attenuation varies with listening mode, environmental sound level, and fit; Apple’s technical paper estimates up to 30 dB NRSA in Noise Cancellation mode, dependent on fit. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed result for an individual wearer.

Apple says the feature is not suitable for extremely loud impulse sounds such as gunfire, fireworks, or jackhammers, or for sustained sounds louder than 110 dBA. It may also be off when the AirPods have no charge, Off listening mode is selected, or Loud Sound Reduction is disabled in Transparency or Adaptive modes. Do not treat it as certified workplace hearing protection or rely on it for high-risk noise. Follow workplace safety requirements and consult your employer about required protection.

The features require AirPods Pro 2 with current firmware and compatible Apple hardware and software. Hearing Test uses a compatible iPhone or iPad; Hearing Aid also supports compatible Mac software in documented configurations. Check Apple’s current requirements and feature-availability table for your country before buying or troubleshooting: regulated health features and Hearing Protection availability vary by region and can change.
Owning compatible AirPods is not always sufficient. You also need supported software, current firmware, suitable fit, and local availability for the particular feature.

Why fit and settings matter
A secure seal affects both test readiness and Hearing Protection performance. Install the ear tips correctly and use the on-device fit check. If the fit is poor, try another supplied tip size and check again. Worn or damaged tips may also affect the seal; verify replacement-tip compatibility with your AirPods Pro 2 generation.
Keep the AirPods and tips clean according to Apple’s instructions. Avoid introducing liquid into the microphones, speaker mesh, vents, or charging case. Check battery charge and listening-mode settings when Hearing Protection seems inactive; the Off mode disables it, and Loud Sound Reduction settings also matter in Transparency and Adaptive modes.

Apple’s Hearing Protection data sheet reports passive attenuation measured with uncharged AirPods Pro 2, while its technical paper describes active processing. These are different measures: passive attenuation is not a single all-purpose protection rating, and active processing varies with fit, mode, and sound. Neither establishes that the earbuds are certified occupational hearing protection.

How to decide whether AirPods Pro 2 are appropriate
- Start with your goal. Hearing Test assesses hearing and produces an audiogram; Hearing Aid personalizes amplification for eligible adults; Hearing Protection manages some environmental noise. Media Assist separately adjusts media and calls.
- Check compatibility and availability. Confirm your AirPods, Apple device, software, firmware, and country support the feature you want.
- Take the test in a quiet setting. Check the ear-tip fit and follow the on-device instructions.
- Use the result thoughtfully. Share the audiogram with a hearing professional if results concern you, symptoms persist, or you need help beyond the feature’s intended scope.
- Use Hearing Aid within its intended scope. It is intended for adults with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss.
- Do not rely on Hearing Protection as workplace PPE. Use suitable protection for gunfire, fireworks, jackhammers, sustained sound above 110 dBA, or other hazardous noise.
Common problems and the safest response
| Problem | What to check | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| A feature does not appear | AirPods model, regional availability, compatible device and software, and firmware. | That every AirPods model or region supports every feature. |
| The test cannot start or the result seems unreliable | Quiet surroundings, correct ear-tip installation, and a secure seal. | That a test result rules out a medical problem. |
| Hearing Protection seems inactive | Battery charge, listening mode, and Loud Sound Reduction settings. | That passive attenuation equals active processing or certified protection. |
| You need protection at work | Employer requirements and protection appropriate to the specific hazard. | That AirPods Pro 2 are certified for every workplace. |
| You have sudden, one-sided, or otherwise concerning symptoms | Contact a qualified medical or hearing professional. | That consumer software is sufficient care. |
Bottom line for buyers
AirPods Pro 2 combine ordinary earbud functions with software-based hearing features: Hearing Test produces an assessment and audiogram, Hearing Aid personalizes amplification for eligible adults, and Hearing Protection can reduce some environmental noise. Their usefulness depends on fit, settings, compatible Apple hardware and software, and local availability.
These features do not replace professional care when results or symptoms warrant it, or appropriate certified protection against hazardous noise. Check Apple’s current requirements and availability for your region before relying on a feature.
