Citizen’s titanium story began with the X-8 Chronometer in 1970, which the company calls the world’s first titanium watch. More than five decades later, Citizen sells watches made with Super Titanium: its proprietary titanium treated with DURATECT surface-hardening technology. The history is a genuine early milestone; claims that today’s material is lighter or harder than steel should be understood as Citizen’s own comparisons, not universal test results.
How Citizen brought titanium to a wristwatch
Citizen traces its titanium research to the 1960s, when the metal drew attention for space applications because of properties including lightness, strength and corrosion resistance. The company also saw potential in a material worn against the skin. In 1970, after years of development, it released the X-8 Chronometer. Citizen describes it as the world’s first titanium watch, launched a year after the Apollo moon landing. Citizen’s technology and history account tells the story from the company’s perspective.
The X-8’s case was 99.6% solid titanium, according to Citizen’s official anniversary history, and fewer than 2,000 units were sold. It was a pioneering but difficult-to-make watch, not evidence that titanium immediately became a mass-market case material. Citizen’s 100th-anniversary history provides those historical figures.
Why titanium was hard to manufacture
Citizen says its engineers nicknamed titanium “triple trouble” because it was difficult to press-form, machine and polish. The company describes low thermal conductivity, machining shavings that could stick to tools or catch fire, and difficulty achieving a mirror finish. The launch therefore marked both a materials milestone and a manufacturing challenge.

What Citizen means by Super Titanium
Super Titanium is Citizen’s proprietary material made by treating titanium with DURATECT, its surface-hardening technology. It is not simply another name for untreated titanium. Citizen describes three broad approaches: coating a material, hardening its surface, or combining the two. The chosen process can affect hardness and color tone, so the name alone does not establish that every watch has the same treatment or finish. Citizen’s technology page explains the company’s approach.
Citizen’s comparisons with stainless steel
Citizen Watch America says Super Titanium is more than five times harder than stainless steel and around 40% lighter. Those are company-published comparisons; the official page does not specify the titanium and steel grades or test conditions behind them. They should not be read as independently verified constants for every Super Titanium watch or every stainless-steel comparison. Citizen Watch America’s Super Titanium page presents the claims.

The practical appeal is a combination of low weight and a surface Citizen has engineered for greater hardness than its stainless-steel comparison. Actual wear, feel and finish depend on the watch’s construction and treatment; a material name by itself is not a substitute for checking the exact model.
Skin comfort: useful context, not a guarantee
Citizen’s history describes an effort to make titanium appealing as a watch material worn against the skin. It points to a 1987 ATTESA model associated with skin comfort and says the company partnered with dermatologists for clinical trials in the 1990s. Those are Citizen’s accounts of its development work, not a medical assurance that every titanium watch is reaction-free or suitable for every wearer. The company’s titanium history provides that context.

What Citizen sells in Super Titanium today
Citizen Watch America’s U.S. men’s Super Titanium collection page listed 58 products when accessed in 2026. Examples included Tsuki-yomi A-T, Promaster Dive, Zenshin and ATTESA. The count, lineup, prices and stock are catalog details that can change; confirm the exact model and its specifications on the live listing. Citizen’s U.S. men’s collection is the current starting point.
These names cover different kinds of watches, so choosing among them requires comparing the individual references rather than assuming they share the same features. Check each model page for purpose, case and bracelet material, any stated DURATECT treatment, size, movement or power system, and current availability. The collection listing establishes examples, not a controlled model-by-model comparison.
Why the 55-year milestone belongs to 2025
Citizen marked 55 years since its first titanium watch in 2025, counting from the X-8’s 1970 launch. The milestone is historical rather than a 2026 anniversary claim. Citizen also says it began supplying Super Titanium for the landing legs of ispace’s HAKUTO-R lunar lander after becoming a corporate partner in 2019. That extension from watches to a space application is part of the company’s own account of the material’s uses. Citizen’s technology page covers the anniversary and HAKUTO-R connection.
