Is the Grand Seiko SBGW305 worth buying? It is a manually wound, stainless-steel dress watch with a silver dial, multi-row bracelet and approximately three days of power reserve. Its 37.3 mm case is compact by contemporary standards, but the 44.3 mm lug-to-lug measurement, 11.7 mm thickness and bracelet fit matter as much as diameter. The key ownership trade-offs are winding it yourself, treating its water rating conservatively, and confirming fit and current regional pricing before purchase.
What is the Grand Seiko SBGW305?
The SBGW305 belongs to Grand Seiko’s Elegance Collection. The manufacturer describes it as a midcentury-inspired classic hand-wound mechanical watch. Its stainless-steel case frames a silver dial, and the multi-row steel bracelet closes with a folding clasp and push-button release. A box-shaped sapphire crystal has an inner anti-reflective coating; the see-through case back is secured with six screws.

Grand Seiko describes the case finishing as Zaratsu polishing. The brand also says the transparent back offers a view of the manually wound movement. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent assessments of the finishing or movement performance. Grand Seiko’s US SBGW305 product page gives the full model specification.
What size is the Grand Seiko SBGW305?
| Measurement | SBGW305 specification |
|---|---|
| Case diameter | 37.3 mm |
| Lug-to-lug | 44.3 mm |
| Thickness | 11.7 mm |
| Band width | 19 mm |
| Listed weight | 108 g |
| Listed bracelet perimeter | 200 mm |
These figures help compare the watch with one you already own, but they cannot predict fit on every wrist. Lug-to-lug length gives a useful indication of how far the case may span across the wrist, while thickness affects how it sits under a cuff. Bracelet links, clasp position and adjustment also change how the watch wears. If possible, try it on or ask a boutique to check the fit rather than deciding from diameter alone.

How accurate is the Grand Seiko 9S64?
The SBGW305 uses Grand Seiko’s caliber 9S64, a manual-winding movement with 24 jewels and an approximately 72-hour power reserve. The power-reserve figure is the manufacturer’s specification; actual running time can vary with the watch’s condition and use.
Grand Seiko publishes two different accuracy figures for the movement, reflecting different conditions:
- Mean daily rate before casing: +5 to −3 seconds per day, measured in a controlled 12-day test of the movement before it is assembled into a case.
- Normal-use accuracy: +10 to −1 seconds per day, the manufacturer’s stated range for use.
These are not interchangeable guarantees of what every owner will see each day. The controlled pre-casing test is distinct from the normal-use range; neither is an independent timing test of a particular watch. For the published figures and their qualifications, see the official product specifications.

Can you swim with the SBGW305?
Do not treat the SBGW305 as a swimming or diving watch. Grand Seiko’s US product page labels it “Splash Resistant,” while the US boutique page separately lists 30m. The brand’s 9S instruction booklet cautions that an everyday-life water-resistance designation is not suitable for swimming. The different page wordings do not make it prudent to expose the watch to swimming or water sports.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor daily ownership, follow the booklet’s water-resistance cautions and avoid assuming that a rating expressed in metres describes a safe swimming depth. Grand Seiko also lists magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m on the US product page. The 9S instruction booklet provides general use and care guidance.
Can you replace the SBGW305 bracelet with a strap?
The listed band width is 19 mm, which makes straps a reasonable option to ask about, but width alone does not establish that a particular strap or clasp will fit correctly. Grand Seiko says suitable straps vary by watch, and availability can differ by location. Ask a local boutique or retailer to confirm compatibility with the exact SBGW305 and the clasp arrangement before ordering. See Grand Seiko’s strap guidance.

What does the SBGW305 cost?
At the time the pages were accessed on October 7, 2026, Grand Seiko’s US product page listed USD 6,000, and its US boutique page also showed USD 6,000 with the watch marked out of stock. The official Japanese boutique listed 781,000 yen including tax. These are region-specific price and stock snapshots, not a universal price or assurance that the watch is available now. Check the official page or a local authorized retailer for current pricing and stock: US product page, US boutique page, and Japanese boutique page.
What should you consider before buying?
Routine
As a manual-winding watch, the SBGW305 requires winding rather than relying on wrist movement to keep it running. Its approximately 72-hour reserve means it can run for around three days when fully wound, according to the manufacturer, but it will stop if left unwound beyond its reserve.

Grand Seiko’s 9S booklet says adjusting a metallic bracelet requires professional knowledge and skill, and directs owners to the retailer or Grand Seiko service network. The booklet recommends inspection and overhaul within three to four years for long-term use. That is the manufacturer’s maintenance recommendation, not a prediction of when a particular watch will fail or a quoted service cost.
Fit and water exposure
Use the case dimensions as a starting point, then assess the watch on your wrist if possible. Treat the water guidance conservatively: the booklet’s warning about everyday-life resistance rules out interpreting the listing as permission to swim with it.
