AirPods Pro 3 are already available
The headline “AirPods Pro 3 Coming This Fall” was accurate only before Apple’s September 2025 announcement. Apple announced AirPods Pro 3 on September 9, 2025, opened preorders that day, and began retail availability on September 19, 2025. The U.S. starting price is $249. They are now Apple’s flagship in-ear AirPods model. Apple’s launch announcement and the Apple Store listing confirm those details.
The current question is different: should you buy AirPods Pro 3 now, keep discounted AirPods Pro 2, or wait for a possible future AirPods model with infrared cameras? Apple has not announced that camera-equipped product, its name, price, specifications, or release date.

What changed in AirPods Pro 3?
Stronger active noise cancellation
Apple says AirPods Pro 3 remove up to twice as much noise as AirPods Pro 2 and four times as much as the original AirPods Pro. That is an Apple test claim, based on the company’s specified IEC 60268-24 testing, preproduction hardware, prerelease firmware, and selected competing products. It should not be read as a universal real-world multiplier in every environment. Apple explains its testing basis here.
Independent testing still found a meaningful improvement. SoundGuys reported about 90% external-noise reduction for AirPods Pro 3 versus 83% for AirPods Pro 2 in its own testing. That is useful evidence of progress, but the result depends on the test method, ear fit, frequency of the noise, and listening environment. In practical terms, the upgrade is most relevant to people who regularly use earbuds on subways, airplanes, busy streets, or in offices. Low-frequency engine and train noise should benefit most from ANC, while voices and sudden sounds remain partly dependent on passive isolation and the quality of the ear-tip seal.
A smaller, redesigned fit
Apple rebuilt the internal architecture and made the earbuds smaller. AirPods Pro 3 include five ear-tip sizes—XXS, XS, S, M, and L—with foam-infused tips. The new XXS option may help listeners who could not get a reliable seal with AirPods Pro 2. Apple’s technical specifications list the available sizes.
Fit is still personal. Some reviewers found the smaller body and new tips more stable, while others preferred the shape of AirPods Pro 2 or experienced movement during sweaty exercise. A new design is not automatically a better design for every ear. If you buy Pro 3, use the return policy and test them during the activities that matter to you.
Built-in heart-rate sensing
AirPods Pro 3 add an in-ear photoplethysmography sensor. Apple says it uses invisible infrared light pulsed 256 times per second to measure changes in blood flow. The sensor supports more than 50 workout types through the Fitness app on iPhone and works with compatible third-party fitness apps. Apple’s heart-rate guide explains setup and supported use.
This is a workout feature, not continuous medical monitoring or a diagnostic device. Results can be affected by poor fit, cold weather, moisture, earwax, skin conditions, piercings, jewelry, and individual circulation. The sensor also reduces the rated listening time to up to 6.5 hours during workouts.
For a user who already wears an Apple Watch, the AirPods sensor is less compelling because both devices can provide heart-rate data during a workout. For someone who exercises with only an iPhone and earbuds, it may be a genuine hardware reason to choose Pro 3.

These are Apple test figures using specified volume levels, devices, software, and preproduction units. Volume, calls, temperature, wireless conditions, enabled features, and firmware affect real-world results. Pro 3 improve the earbuds’ single-charge ANC rating, but that does not mean every case-battery comparison will show the same improvement. See Apple’s complete battery specifications.

IP57 resistance for the earbuds and case
Both AirPods Pro 3 and their charging case have an IP57 dust-, sweat-, and water-resistance rating. This is an improvement over the IP54 rating listed for AirPods Pro 2. It is useful for exercise and rain, but it does not make the earbuds waterproof or suitable for swimming and other water sports. Resistance can diminish with wear, and Apple says not to charge them while wet. Apple’s comparison page provides the rating details.
Updated acoustic hardware
Apple lists a custom high-excursion driver, a custom high-dynamic-range amplifier, a redesigned multiport acoustic architecture, and next-generation Adaptive EQ. AirPods Pro 3 also support Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Transparency mode, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, and Personalized Volume. The technical specification page lists the audio features.
Apple describes the result as a wider soundstage, stronger bass, and clearer vocals. Independent testing found audible changes, including more treble extension, but judged the difference from Pro 2 less dramatic than the ANC improvement. If sound quality alone is your reason to upgrade, auditioning both models is more useful than relying on product claims.
Hearing-health features
AirPods Pro 3 support Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, Hearing Protection, and automatic Conversation Boost when using Hearing Aid. Apple rates up to 10 hours of battery life in Transparency mode while Hearing Aid is enabled.
Hearing Aid is intended for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. It is not a universal replacement for prescription hearing aids, and the Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features are regulated and may not be available in every country or region. Availability also depends on the user’s hearing profile and compatible Apple hardware. Check Apple’s regional feature-availability page before buying for this purpose.
Live Translation, with important conditions
Live Translation is supported on AirPods Pro 3, but it is not exclusive to them. Apple also supports it on AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation when the relevant hardware, software, firmware, language, and regional requirements are met.
Apple’s current requirements include:
- AirPods Pro 3 with the latest firmware.
- An iPhone 15 Pro or later.
- iOS 26 or later.
- Apple Intelligence enabled.
- The Translate app installed.
- A supported language and region.
Apple lists English in U.S. and U.K. variants, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, and simplified and traditional Mandarin among the supported languages. Availability may vary by region and language. Apple also warns that generative translation may be inaccurate or unexpected, so it should not be relied on for important medical, legal, or safety decisions. New charging-case hardware
The USB-C case supports MagSafe, Qi-certified chargers, Apple Watch chargers, and USB-C charging. It includes a speaker for Find My, a lanyard loop, and a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. Find My functionality requires iOS 26 or later. Apple does not include a USB-C charging cable or power adapter in the box. Apple’s comparison confirms that several headline capabilities, including Live Translation and hearing features, extend to AirPods Pro 2 under the right software and hardware conditions. Independent testing found the most noticeable Pro 3 gains in ANC and battery life, while the sound difference was more modest. Upgrade to AirPods Pro 3 if:
- You want stronger noise cancellation for planes, trains, offices, or city streets.
- You need up to eight hours of ANC listening on a charge.
- You exercise without an Apple Watch and want workout heart-rate data.
- You need a different fit and may benefit from the XXS ear tip.
- You want the newer IP57 rating for workouts and rainy commutes.
- Your Pro 2 batteries have noticeably degraded.
- You can buy from a retailer with a practical return policy.
Keep AirPods Pro 2 if:
- You are satisfied with their ANC, fit, and battery life.
- You already use an Apple Watch for workout heart-rate tracking.
- You mainly want Live Translation or hearing features, which Pro 2 can also support with compatible software.
- The Pro 3 shape is uncomfortable for your ears.
- Pro 2 is available at a substantially lower price.
- You use Android and would not benefit from most Apple-only features.
Requirements and limitations buyers should know
Check the acoustic seal
AirPods Pro 3 use Apple’s Acoustic Seal Test, a different label from the older Pro 1 and Pro 2 Ear Tip Fit Test.
- Connect AirPods Pro 3 to an iPhone or iPad.
- Open Settings.
- Tap the AirPods name near the top of the screen, or open Settings > Bluetooth and tap the information button beside the AirPods.
- Choose Acoustic Seal Test.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- If the result is poor, adjust the earbuds and repeat the test.
- Try different tip sizes independently for the left and right ears.
A good seal affects both ANC and perceived sound quality. It can also affect heart-rate contact, so the tip that sounds best may not produce the most reliable workout reading. Apple’s fit guide explains the process.
Improve heart-rate readings
- Try another ear-tip size.
- Make sure the sensor touches skin inside the ear.
- Keep the sensors clean and dry.
- Reinsert the earbuds and rotate the stems toward your face.
- Remove nearby jewelry temporarily if a piercing interferes.
- Consider cold weather, moisture, earwax, skin conditions, and circulation.
To turn the feature on or off, connect the earbuds, open Settings, tap the AirPods name, and toggle Heart Rate. To view data, start a workout in Fitness or a compatible third-party app. Dashes or dimmed readings usually call for checking the connection and fit. Android compatibility
AirPods Pro 3 work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but Apple says functionality may be limited. Android users should not expect the complete Apple experience, including Apple Intelligence-powered Live Translation, the Fitness heart-rate workflow, seamless device switching, and Apple’s full hearing-health controls. If Android is your primary platform, Android-focused earbuds may provide better controls, multipoint behavior, codec support, and app integration.
What the camera-equipped AirPods rumors actually say
Reports describe Apple working on AirPods with tiny infrared cameras. The rumored cameras are not primarily described as conventional photo or video cameras. Reported uses include giving Siri visual context, supporting Visual Intelligence-style features, recognizing hand gestures, improving spatial-audio interaction with Apple Vision Pro, and contributing to Apple’s broader AI-wearables strategy.

Those details come from Bloomberg, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, and Apple rumor coverage—not from Apple product documentation. Bloomberg reported in May 2026 that the project had reached advanced testing, while MacRumors summarized earlier camera-AirPods reporting.

The available reports do not establish a single reliable launch date:
- February 2026: MacRumors reported rumors of a future AirPods Pro model with infrared cameras.
- May 7, 2026: Bloomberg reported advanced testing of camera-equipped AirPods.
- June 16, 2026: Bloomberg reported a late-2027 schedule. See the Bloomberg Law report.
- August 2026: Some secondary reports suggested a possible fall 2026 announcement, but that remains unconfirmed and conflicts with the later 2027 reporting.
The conflicting dates could reflect multiple prototypes or product tiers, but that is an inference. There is no confirmation that Apple plans to sell two models, or that either product will be called AirPods Pro 4 or AirPods Ultra.
Do not treat any of the following as confirmed: a fall 2026 launch, an “AirPods Ultra” name, a $299 or $349 price, cameras in both earbuds, gesture controls replacing the stems, photo or video recording, an H3 chip, or a 2026 release instead of 2027. The accurate summary is: Apple is reportedly developing camera-equipped AirPods, but the name, price, specifications, and release date remain unconfirmed.

Buy AirPods Pro 3 now if:
- You need new earbuds immediately.
- ANC is a priority.
- You want longer single-charge listening.
- Workout heart-rate tracking would replace or supplement an Apple Watch.
- You use an iPhone 15 Pro or newer and want Live Translation, while understanding its software and language requirements.
- You value automatic pairing and switching across Apple devices.
- You can confirm the fit through the Acoustic Seal Test or a retailer’s return policy.
Keep Pro 2 if:
Your current earbuds remain comfortable, their battery is healthy, and you are not bothered by their ANC performance. Pro 2 already receives several software-based capabilities, including Live Translation and hearing features where supported. A discounted Pro 2 is especially sensible if you do not need heart-rate sensing or the IP57 upgrade.

You specifically want rumored cameras, Visual Intelligence, gesture recognition, or a new AI-wearable category—and you are willing to wait through an uncertain 2026–2027 window. Waiting has a cost: the camera product may be delayed again, may be more expensive, may target a different use case, or may never reach retail. It is not a guaranteed replacement for AirPods Pro 3.
Consider another brand if:
- Android is your primary phone.
- You need a customizable equalizer or broader codec support.
- You want more dependable multipoint behavior across non-Apple devices.
- You need ear hooks or another highly secure design for running and outdoor activity.
- You prioritize maximum battery life over Apple ecosystem integration.
