Yes: the limited 2023 Alpina Heritage Carrée Mechanical 140 Years uses vintage, restored AL-490 hand-wound movements dating to 1938—not newly made modern movements styled to look old. Alpina offered it in black- and silver-dial versions, each limited to 14 pieces. It is distinct from the later Carrée Automatic 140 Years, which uses a contemporary automatic movement.
What is the Heritage Carrée Mechanical 140 Years?
Alpina introduced the limited mechanical Carrée in 2023 for the brand’s 140th anniversary, marking its origins in 1883. The two references are AL-490BA3C10 with a black dial and AL-490SA3C10 with a silver dial. Monochrome Watches reported 14 watches per dial colour, or 28 in total, in its 22 June 2023 overview (Monochrome Watches).
The name is easy to confuse with Alpina’s separate Carrée Automatic 140 Years. The mechanical anniversary edition is the one with restored vintage movements; the later automatic watch takes inspiration from that historic caliber but does not contain one.
Does it use an original 1938 movement?
It uses vintage Alpina/Straub & Co. AL-490 movements dating to 1938 that have been restored. That makes the movement itself historic, rather than a newly manufactured homage caliber. Alpina’s history associates 1938 with the introduction of its Alpina 4 concept, while its caliber listing classifies AL-490 as a hand-winding small-seconds movement (Alpina history; Alpina caliber classifications).

The published power-reserve figures do not agree: Monochrome lists 42 hours, while Fratello’s 2023 account gives 45 hours. Alpina’s caliber page confirms the winding type and small seconds but does not settle the discrepancy. Monochrome also lists 17 jewels and a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour (Monochrome Watches; Fratello Watches).

Alpina’s official copy describes the automatic watch as “inspired by the authentic hand-wound Caliber 490 dated from 1938,” and its specifications identify the installed caliber as AL-530. Inspiration and design lineage should not be mistaken for movement identity (Alpina US).

Case, dial and wearing details
The mechanical edition’s polished silver case measures 29.50 mm across, 35.70 mm long and 9.71 mm thick. It has a domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal, a screwed transparent caseback and 30 m water resistance. Monochrome lists the strap as light-brown ostrich leather with contrasting stitching and a pin buckle (Monochrome Watches).
Its rectangular Art Deco form and compact dimensions distinguish it from the larger automatic Carrée. The silver case is also a material distinction: the automatic version uses stainless steel, not silver.

Price and what is known about availability
Monochrome reported a launch price of €4,995 for the limited mechanical edition in 2023. That is historical pricing, not a current offer or an estimate of today’s resale value. The cited sources establish the original 14-per-colour production, but do not verify current stock for either mechanical reference.
The official Alpina US page concerns the separate automatic reference AL-530SAC3C6 and showed it as sold out when checked; that status does not establish availability of the mechanical AL-490 watches.
