Etienne Malec, founder of the French watch brand Baltic Watches, describes the company in three words: “Enthusiasts, vintage-inspired, and affordable.” That is his own characterization, given in a March 2024 interview with Time+Tide, and it is not an independent assessment of quality or pricing. The sections below follow what Malec has said across interviews published between 2017 and 2024, explain what each statement means in practice, and flag where a detail may have changed since.
How the project started, in Malec’s account
Malec presents Baltic as an enthusiast project before it was a business plan. In a November 2022 interview with Automotiv Press, he said the aim was an accessible watch that carried over the design codes of the eras that inspired it, sold only directly to the customer with no distributor in between. His original French wording is that the goal was to offer a vintage-inspired watch with the codes of the eras it draws on, “pour un prix accessible, et seulement en direct avec le client.” Read in English, that means an accessible price and direct sales only, with no intermediary distributing the watches. The dates Malec gives need to be read in pairs. Interviews place the start of the Baltic project in September 2015, and the establishment of the brand itself in 2017. The 2015 date marks the project’s origin, while 2017 marks the company taking shape; they describe different stages rather than conflicting accounts. (Le Petit Poussoir, 24 April 2017)
What “vintage-inspired” means for Baltic
In the 2022 Automotiv Press interview, Malec listed the features Baltic borrows from earlier watches. Each is a design choice he named, not a measured comparison with other brands:

- Case size: the sizing associated with the era being referenced.
- Proportions and thinness: a slim profile rather than a modern, oversized one.
- Dial architecture: the layout of the dial, not only its colour.
- Movement: mechanical only, with no quartz or hybrid option in the range he described.
- Finishing: the decoration and polish of the case and movement.
Malec also rejects the idea of chasing whatever is fashionable. In the 2024 Time+Tide conversation he said, “We don’t trend chase.” For readers, that is the most useful lens for judging Baltic’s catalogue: the watches are meant to follow a consistent historical reference rather than shift with market trends. Direct-to-consumer sales and the case for a physical retailer
Baltic began as a direct-to-consumer brand, and Malec still describes it as largely direct. He is not against physical retail, though, and his reasoning is practical. Online-only sales mean customers cannot handle a watch before buying it. A physical setting lets them judge proportions on the wrist and see how the colours look in person, which matters for a brand whose designs depend on size and dial detail.

That reasoning is why he named Time+Tide as a global retail partner, citing trust and communication as the deciding factors. In 2022 he also said that collaboration models could be bought through Baltic’s own site or through partner sites. Those interviews describe the arrangement in principle. They do not establish any current affiliate programme, commission structure, partner inventory, or sales terms, and readers who want to buy through a retailer should check the current arrangement directly with that retailer.
Kickstarter and MR01 launch figures
Malec’s 2024 interview contains the company’s most quoted numbers. They are his own figures, given in conversation, and have not been checked against audited accounts or an independent study.

Selected models and collaborations
MR01
Malec called the MR01 a surprising sales success, and it is the model most closely tied to Baltic’s reputation. In a February 2022 Monochrome Watches interview, he said he had worked on the project for more than two years and wanted proper feedback on the movement. The watch uses Breguet-style indexes and a micro-rotor movement from a Chinese supplier, and he described building a trusting working relationship with that company. His stated goal was a classical, thin, 1940s-inspired dress watch. (Monochrome Watches, 16 February 2022)

These are the founder’s statements about development and design. They do not independently establish how the movement performs, and they describe the watch as it was at the time of those interviews rather than its current specification.
Hermétique Night Mode
The Time+Tide collaboration is based on the Hermétique collection and uses a black dial. Malec pointed to three details. A mirrored metal sector about half a millimetre wide adds a reflective accent. Blocky Super-LumiNova hour numerals are applied to the dial. The overall aim, in his words, is to add reflection and depth to a matte dial. Whether the model is still available, and in what form, is not established by the interview.

Prismic
In the 2024 conversation, Malec described the Prismic as a 36 mm three-hand watch on a mesh bracelet that sits flush against the case. He presented it as a departure from two things he associated with earlier Baltic collections: a shared case shape, and strap or bracelet compatibility across collections. Those details reflect the interview date. They are not a guarantee of the current catalogue, sizes, or whether the bracelet fits other models.

The interviews are a reliable record of what Malec said at each date, but they do not describe Baltic’s present business. Before relying on any of the details above, check the following with current sources:

- Whether the MR01, Hermétique Night Mode, and Prismic are available, and in which configurations.
- The current list of retail and collaboration partners, and their terms.
- Whether the 2015 and 2017 dates and the launch figures have been updated in later company communications.
Malec’s interviews across 2017 to 2024 are consistent on the core idea: a direct, enthusiast-oriented brand that follows historical references and avoids chasing trends. Treat the financial figures as his own statements, and confirm current product details before purchasing.
