What is the Angelus Dato 12?
In Tomas Rosputinsky’s 2019 Fratello Watches article, the Dato 12 is described as a non-chronograph day-date watch from Angelus’s 250-caliber family. The article identifies its movement as a signed, manual-wind caliber 255 with 17 jewels and central seconds. Its caption dates examples in the 250-caliber family to around 1948; that is an approximate date, not a verified production date for every Dato 12.
The article reports a 35 mm chrome case, plexiglass crystal, Roman-numeral dial and 18 mm lug width. It also describes a signed case back and two pushers on the left side of the case. These are reported specifications, not a substitute for checking an individual watch. In particular, Rosputinsky was unsure whether the hands on his own example were original.
How does the day-date display work?
The weekday and date appear in apertures below 12. According to Rosputinsky’s description, two separate, concentric discs carry the Arabic numerals that combine to show the date, while another disc supplies the weekday. This compact arrangement is the Dato 12’s defining detail: several calendar indications share a small area of the dial.

Why might the date show 32 or higher?
The 2019 article reports an unusual month-end sequence. Rather than moving straight from the final date of a month to 01, the display may continue through 32, 33 and onward to 39, then show 00. The account characterizes this as a quirk of the caliber; it does not establish that every surviving Dato 12 behaves identically. Treat it as reported behavior to ask about and observe on the specific watch, rather than assuming it is either a universal feature or proof of a fault.
Rosputinsky calls the behavior a “flaw,” but also writes affectionately about seeing a “37th day of the month.” That is his personal response to the mechanism, not a technical assessment of its reliability or condition.

What should you check on a vintage example?
Originality and condition need to be judged watch by watch. Rosputinsky describes consulting Angelus collector and author Joel Pynson about the dial and hands, underscoring that even apparently straightforward details can require specialist knowledge. Before buying, examine the actual watch and request clear photographs, service information and answers to specific questions.
- Dial and hands: Check for damage, refinishing or replacement, and ask whether the hands are believed to be original. The 2019 author could not confirm the originality of the hands on his own example.
- Case: Inspect the chrome case for wear, damage and signs of polishing; compare its condition with the seller’s description and photographs.
- Calendar and movement: Ask the seller to demonstrate winding, timekeeping and the day-date operation, including the reported month-end behavior. A demonstration is not a substitute for a qualified inspection.
- Service documentation: Request dated records and clarify what was serviced. If records are unavailable, factor the uncertainty into your decision and seek an assessment from a watchmaker familiar with vintage watches.
- Fit: The article lists an 18 mm lug width, but confirm the width and strap fit on the specific watch before ordering an accessory.
How much does an Angelus Dato 12 cost?
Fratello Watches gave a range of 800–1,500 EUR in its August 8, 2019 article, describing the price context associated with buying the watch. That is historical context, not a current valuation or a present-day asking-price guide. No recent sale results or current market range are established here, so assess any offer against the individual watch’s condition, originality, service history and documentation rather than treating that old figure as a benchmark.

How does it differ from the related Angelus models?
The same Fratello article distinguishes the Dato 12 from two related models by their complications. It describes the Datoluxe as including a moon phase and the Chrono-Datoluxe as a chronograph. The Dato 12 is the simpler non-chronograph calendar watch.
