Apple AirPods 4 With Active Noise Cancellation Review: Open-Fit ANC Tested

AirPods 4 with ANC make noise cancellation useful in an open, unsealed design, but fit, bass consistency, battery life, and Apple-only features determine whether they are the right alternative to AirPods Pro.

AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation are worth considering if you want useful noise reduction without silicone ear tips. They reduce steady rumble and HVAC noise unusually well for an open-fit earbud, but they do not match AirPods Pro for isolation, bass consistency, fit security, or battery life.

AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation are the rare open-fit earbuds that make ANC genuinely useful, but they are not a replacement for AirPods Pro. Their unsealed design reduces the plugged-up feeling associated with silicone ear tips and preserves more awareness of the environment. In return, they provide less passive isolation, less consistent bass, a less secure fit for some ears, and shorter battery life than sealed alternatives.

The most accurate verdict is therefore conditional: buy them if you use Apple devices, dislike silicone tips, and want moderate noise reduction rather than silence. Choose AirPods Pro 2 or another sealed pair if maximum isolation, bass, exercise security, call performance, or endurance matters more.

This review separates Apple’s specifications from measurements and observations published by SoundGuys, What Hi-Fi?, RTINGS, and Macworld. It does not present those publications’ results as a new hands-on laboratory test.

Verdict: meaningful open-fit ANC, with predictable compromises

Apple introduced two AirPods 4 models in September 2024: the regular version at a U.S. launch price of $129 and the ANC version at $179. Retail availability began on September 20, 2024, according to Apple’s launch announcement. Those are launch/list prices, not a claim about the current selling price, which depends on retailer, seller, stock, country, and promotions.

The AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation are most convincing in an office, on public transport, in an airplane cabin, or around a steady fan or air-conditioning system. They reduce low-frequency rumble and make spoken audio easier to follow without sealing the ear canal. They do not make nearby conversation, sharp mechanical sounds, announcements, or traffic disappear. An open earbud cannot rely on the same passive barrier as a silicone-tipped model.

The product’s success is therefore not measured by whether it produces the strongest ANC. It is measured by whether it gives listeners who reject ear tips enough noise reduction to be useful. On that narrower question, the answer is yes—provided the earbuds fit the listener’s ears consistently.

Fit: the feature that determines almost everything else

The AirPods 4 ANC use a one-size-fits-all open design. There is no silicone tip to create a seal and no secondary retention feature beyond the earbud’s shape and stem. That makes them less invasive than AirPods Pro, but it also makes fit much more dependent on individual ear anatomy.

A stable fit matters for three separate reasons:

  • Comfort: the lack of a tip can be much more comfortable over several hours for people who dislike pressure or the occluded sensation of sealed earbuds.
  • Retention: some ears hold the AirPods securely during walking, while others allow movement or require frequent adjustment. The fit should not be assumed to be secure for vigorous exercise.
  • Sound and ANC consistency: when an open earbud shifts, bass and sub-bass can change noticeably, and the microphones may no longer receive the same acoustic information. That can reduce the perceived effectiveness of noise cancellation.

SoundGuys recommends trying the AirPods 4 before purchase because the fit varies substantially between listeners. RTINGS also notes that sealed AirPods Pro models generally have an advantage in isolation and bass reproduction because their ear-tip seal is more reliable.

A proper evaluation should include at least a few hours of wear, a walk, head movement, and light exercise. Listen to the same bass-heavy passage before and after reseating the earbuds. If the bass changes substantially, or ANC performance changes whenever the earbuds move, the open design is not delivering a consistent fit for that listener.

How effective is the ANC?

The ANC works, but it works selectively. The open housing provides little passive attenuation, particularly in the low and mid frequencies. The electronic cancellation supplies the missing benefit, but it cannot fully compensate for the absence of a physical seal.

In practical listening, the strongest results are with continuous, relatively predictable sounds: airplane or train rumble, bus and road noise, office HVAC, air-conditioning, exhaust fans, and general low-level traffic. What Hi-Fi? found that these sounds were noticeably reduced, making music, podcasts, and speech easier to hear.

Higher-frequency and intermittent sounds remain more exposed. Voices, drilling, sharp subway sounds, and public-transport announcements were more audible in What Hi-Fi?’s comparison than through AirPods Pro 2 or Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds. That is the central limitation: the AirPods 4 ANC can lower the background floor without creating the quiet bubble produced by a strong sealed ANC model.

In a laboratory comparison, SoundGuys measured approximately 20 dB of hybrid ANC reduction in the mids and highs. That is a result from SoundGuys’ test setup, not a universal performance guarantee. The same testing also found that low-frequency noise remained more exposed than with sealed earbuds and that fit affected the result.

RTINGS characterized the isolation as unusually capable for an open design. That description is more useful than calling the AirPods 4 ANC simply “good” or “bad”: their performance is impressive relative to open earbuds, but modest relative to the best sealed ANC earbuds.

What the modes mean in an open earbud

  • ANC on: the best choice for steady rumble and HVAC noise, but not a silent-room effect.
  • Transparency: less essential than it is on sealed earbuds because the open fit already permits substantial environmental awareness when ANC is off.
  • Adaptive Audio: dynamically adjusts how much sound is blocked according to the surroundings. What Hi-Fi? found this mode useful in changing environments.
  • Conversation Awareness: intended to make interactions easier without manually changing modes. Its availability and behavior depend on compatible Apple hardware and software.

Wind deserves its own test. An open design can remain comfortable outdoors, but wind hitting the microphones may affect both ANC and calls. Do not judge outdoor performance from a single quiet walk; compare ANC off, ANC on, and Adaptive Audio on the same route.

Sound quality: clear and enjoyable, but not Pro-level bass

The AirPods 4 ANC have a custom high-excursion driver, high-dynamic-range amplifier, and Adaptive EQ. In listening impressions, the overall presentation is more successful than the lack of a seal might suggest. What Hi-Fi? described the sound as clear, detailed, agile, balanced, and voice-friendly.

That does not mean they sound identical to AirPods Pro. The Pro’s seal gives it a more dependable acoustic load, stronger bass authority, more consistent sub-bass, and better isolation. With AirPods 4 ANC, bass depends partly on how the earbuds sit in the listener’s ears. Two people can therefore have noticeably different impressions of the same track.

SoundGuys reported a 3.6 mean opinion score in its MDAQS evaluation and attributed some of the result to reduced sub-bass and the unsealed design. That score should be treated as a result of SoundGuys’ evaluation method, not as a universal rating or a substitute for a listener’s fit test.

A useful listening sequence includes:

  1. A spoken podcast or audiobook, to check vocal intelligibility at low volume.
  2. Acoustic vocals, to assess midrange clarity and sibilance.
  3. A bass-heavy track, first with ANC off and then with ANC on, to expose fit-related bass loss.
  4. An orchestral or layered recording, to check separation and whether the presentation becomes congested.
  5. The same passages after walking or adjusting the earbuds, to see whether the tonal balance remains stable.

ANC can change the perceived balance of a recording, especially when it lowers competing background noise. The fair comparison is not merely whether the AirPods 4 ANC sound pleasant in a quiet room; it is whether they preserve enough bass, detail, and vocal clarity when the listener is moving through a real environment.

Calls and microphones

Apple lists dual beamforming microphones, an inward-facing microphone, a speech-detecting accelerometer, and Voice Isolation. The hardware and processing are designed to prioritize the speaker’s voice, but call quality is also dependent on the connected device and software.

SoundGuys reports that AirPods 4 call processing uses AI processing on the connected iPhone to filter background noise. That means microphone performance should not be assumed to be identical on an iPhone, Android phone, Windows computer, or Mac. Voice Isolation settings and device support may change the result.

In What Hi-Fi?’s test, the other caller heard a clear voice during a busy rush-hour street call, although intermittent traffic and a small amount of hiss remained. What Hi-Fi? judged AirPods Pro 2 better overall for calls.

A credible review should test calls in a quiet room, an office, a busy street, wind, and a reverberant indoor space. Record the paired device, operating-system version, and whether Voice Isolation was enabled. One clean indoor call is not enough evidence for a broad microphone recommendation.

Battery life: the clearest weakness

Apple rates the earbuds for up to four hours of listening with ANC enabled and up to five hours with noise control off. With the case, the published figures are up to 20 hours with ANC enabled and up to 30 hours with noise control off. Apple also says that a five-minute charge provides approximately one hour of listening.

Those are controlled maximum estimates using preproduction hardware, a preproduction iPhone 16 Pro Max, prerelease software, 50% volume, and a specified AAC playlist. Actual runtime changes with volume, calls, audio formats, device behavior, spatial audio, and other features. The full conditions are described in Apple’s technical specifications.

Independent results show why test conditions must be stated. Macworld measured 4 hours and 16 minutes while switching among ANC modes at a volume six clicks below maximum and listening to music, podcasts, and an audiobook. SoundGuys measured 6 hours and 21 minutes with noise cancellation and Transparency disabled, while cautioning that active modes reduce runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These results are not contradictory. A no-ANC result should not be compared directly with Apple’s ANC rating or with a mixed-mode result. For a useful battery review, run separate tests for ANC on, ANC off, mixed listening, and a voice call. Report the first earbud to shut down, the volume level, the audio source, and whether Spatial Audio, Conversation Awareness, Adaptive Audio, or volume normalization was active.

Four hours with ANC is enough for a commute, a flight segment, or a work session with a top-up. It is less reassuring for long travel or a full working day away from the charging case. Frequent top-ups also consume the case’s capacity faster, which is why What Hi-Fi? identifies the four-hour ANC rating as disappointing against several rivals.

Charging, Find My, and durability

The ANC case can charge by USB-C, a Qi-certified wireless charger, or an Apple Watch charger. It also has a speaker for Find My proximity alerts, an advantage over the standard AirPods 4 case. Apple says Find My functionality for this case requires iOS 26 or later, so the exact behavior should be checked against the current operating-system version before publication.

The earbuds and case carry an IP54 dust-, sweat-, and water-resistance rating under controlled laboratory conditions. This is appropriate reassurance for perspiration and incidental splashes, not permission to swim, shower with them, or charge them while damp. Apple’s warning about charging wet earbuds or a wet case is important because water resistance does not eliminate charging risk.

No evidence in the supplied testing establishes long-term battery degradation, repairability, or durability beyond Apple’s rating and short-term review protocols. Those should remain open questions rather than being inferred from the IP54 label.

Apple devices versus Android and Windows

AirPods 4 ANC support Bluetooth 5.3 and can function as wireless Bluetooth headphones with Apple and non-Apple devices. Basic playback is not the same as full feature support, however.

The strongest experience is with an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Vision Pro running compatible current software. Apple lists features such as Personalized Spatial Audio, dynamic head tracking, Voice Isolation, Conversation Awareness, Siri Interactions, and Live Translation as dependent on combinations of device, operating system, firmware, language, and region. Availability can change, so those requirements should be confirmed for the exact review device and location using Apple’s current support documentation.

Controls are distributed through Apple’s operating-system interfaces rather than a dedicated AirPods companion app. SoundGuys notes the absence of a dedicated control app. Android users can pair the earbuds and listen, but What Hi-Fi? confirms that they lose the full iOS and Siri feature set and do not get a dedicated control app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes AirPods 4 ANC a reasonable Android purchase only if the buyer is comfortable treating them as relatively basic Bluetooth earbuds. They are not a feature-complete Android choice, particularly for people who want deep customization, a device-independent settings app, or the full Apple software experience.

AirPods 4 ANC versus the alternatives

Standard AirPods 4

The standard AirPods 4 share the general open-earbud design and H2 chip but omit the ANC model’s Active Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, and Conversation Awareness. The ANC version also includes a wireless-charging case and a case speaker for Find My alerts. The standard AirPods 4 make more sense when the priority is Apple integration and an open fit, not active noise reduction or wireless case charging.

At the September 2024 U.S. launch, standard AirPods 4 cost $129 and the ANC model cost $179. That $50 launch difference should not be treated as a current price comparison without checking today’s listings.

AirPods Pro 2

AirPods Pro 2 are the better choice for maximum isolation, stronger bass, longer continuous listening, and a more adjustable or secure fit. Their interchangeable silicone tips create the seal that AirPods 4 ANC deliberately avoids. They are also the relevant Apple alternative for Pro-specific hearing features: SoundGuys notes that AirPods Pro 2 support hearing-aid functionality while AirPods 4 ANC do not.

Best Value
Bucephalus Wireless Earbuds with Smart Touchscreen Case
  • SMART TOUCHSCREEN CASE
  • HI-FI SOUND & 5 EQ MODES
  • ANC helps reduce distracting background noise for more focused listening, while ENC improves voice clarity during calls.

The AirPods 4 ANC are preferable when silicone tips are uncomfortable, when the listener wants more natural environmental awareness, or when the plugged-up sensation of sealed earbuds is a deal-breaker. The Pro is preferable when ANC strength and consistency matter more than an open fit.

Competing sealed earbuds

Consider a competing sealed model if ANC performance, battery endurance, or Android controls rank above Apple ecosystem integration. The AirPods 4 ANC’s advantage is not absolute noise reduction or battery life; it is the combination of Apple convenience and an open, less invasive fit.

Choose this When it is the better fit
AirPods 4 ANC You use Apple devices, dislike silicone tips, want moderate ANC, and value environmental awareness.
Standard AirPods 4 You want the open AirPods design and Apple integration without paying for noise-control features.
AirPods Pro 2 You want stronger isolation, bass, retention, longer continuous listening, or Pro-specific hearing features.
Competing sealed earbuds You prioritize maximum ANC, endurance, or a better control experience on Android or Windows.

A fair test protocol for AirPods 4 ANC

Because fit and software affect the outcome, a review should document the following rather than presenting a single subjective statement about ANC:

  1. Identify the setup: record the exact AirPods model, firmware, paired phone, operating-system version, volume, region, and audio source.
  2. Test fit variation: try at least three seating positions or, if possible, several listeners. Record comfort after several hours, retention while walking, and whether bass or ANC changes when the earbuds shift.
  3. Use matched noise scenes: compare ANC off, ANC on, Adaptive Audio, and Transparency in airplane or low-frequency rumble, bus or subway noise, office HVAC, conversation, keyboard sounds, street traffic, and wind.
  4. Measure usefulness, not silence: report whether each mode makes a podcast, voice call, or music track easier to hear. Note which sounds remain prominent.
  5. Match audio comparisons: use the same clips and matched volume when comparing AirPods 4 ANC with standard AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro. Include speech, acoustic vocals, bass-heavy music, and layered recordings.
  6. Run separate battery tests: test ANC on, ANC off, mixed listening, and a voice call. State the volume, codec or source where relevant, active features, and which earbud stops first.
  7. Test calls properly: use a quiet room, office, busy street, wind, and reverberant indoor space. Identify the paired device and whether Voice Isolation was enabled.
  8. Verify the case: test USB-C, Qi charging, and Apple Watch charging if those accessories are available. Check Find My case behavior on the current supported operating system.
  9. Check software claims: confirm Live Translation, Siri Interactions, Conversation Awareness, Personalized Spatial Audio, and other software-dependent features for the exact device, firmware, language, and region.
  10. Separate evidence: label Apple’s controlled claims, third-party laboratory results, and the reviewer’s own observations as different kinds of evidence.

Accessories worth considering

The case supports USB-C, Qi-certified wireless charging, and Apple Watch charging, but the cable is sold separately. If you need one, a compatible USB-C cable for AirPods is the straightforward addition. A Qi wireless charger is useful only if wireless charging fits your setup; it is not required when USB-C is more convenient or when you already own a compatible charger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An AirPods 4 ANC case is another sensible add-on, but compatibility must be explicit. AirPods 4 ANC and other AirPods cases are not interchangeable by appearance alone. Confirm that a protective case is made for the AirPods 4 charging-case dimensions and that it does not block the speaker or interfere with wireless charging if that feature matters.

Who should buy AirPods 4 ANC?

  • Buy them if you use Apple devices, dislike silicone tips, want useful reduction of steady background noise, and prefer to remain aware of your surroundings.
  • Buy standard AirPods 4 if you mainly want the open fit and Apple pairing experience and do not need ANC or a wireless-charging case.
  • Buy AirPods Pro 2 if you need the strongest isolation, a more secure or adjustable fit, stronger and more consistent bass, longer continuous battery life, or Pro-specific hearing functionality.
  • Choose another sealed earbud if you use Android or Windows as your primary platform, require a full control app, or place battery endurance and maximum ANC above Apple integration.

AirPods 4 ANC are not simply cheaper AirPods Pro. They are a solution to a different problem: how to reduce everyday noise without putting a silicone plug in the ear. For the listener who wants that compromise, they are unusually capable. For everyone else, the same compromise is the reason to keep shopping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the ANC effective without silicone ear tips?

Yes, but with limits. Independent testing found useful reduction of engine rumble, HVAC, fans, traffic, and train noise. Voices, drilling, announcements, and other high-frequency or intermittent sounds remain more audible than through sealed AirPods Pro or comparable in-ear ANC models.

How long do AirPods 4 ANC last?

Apple rates the earbuds for up to four hours with ANC enabled and up to five hours with noise control off. The case ratings are up to 20 hours with ANC and up to 30 hours with noise control off. Independent results vary by mode, volume, and test protocol, so these should be treated as maximum estimates rather than guaranteed runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do AirPods 4 ANC work with Android?

They support basic Bluetooth playback on Android and other non-Apple devices, but the experience is limited. Android users do not receive the complete iOS and Siri feature set or a dedicated Apple control app, and software-dependent features require compatible Apple devices, operating systems, firmware, languages, and regions.

Are AirPods 4 ANC better than AirPods Pro?

Choose AirPods Pro 2 for stronger isolation, more consistent bass, a more secure adjustable fit, longer continuous listening, or Pro-specific hearing features. Choose AirPods 4 ANC if you dislike silicone tips and want a more open, naturally aware listening experience.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: AirPods 4 ANC deliver meaningful reduction of steady low-frequency noise in a comfortable open fit, but they cannot match sealed earbuds for isolation, bass consistency, fit security, or battery endurance. They are a strong Apple-centric choice for people who dislike silicone tips—not the best choice for maximum ANC or Android flexibility.
