The reliable way to set up AirPods is to identify the model first, then pair it using the correct gesture. Older AirPods and AirPods Pro cases use a rear setup button; AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 use a double-tap on the front of the case; AirPods Max use the listening-mode button. After pairing, this guide shows how to connect AirPods to Apple and non-Apple devices, charge the correct case, customize controls, use Siri and Find My, reset connection problems, update firmware, and clean them safely.
Important: AirPods instructions are not universal. AirPods 1 and 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max use different pairing gestures, controls, charging cases, and Find My features. Identify your model first, then follow the matching steps below.
1. Identify your AirPods model before setting them up
On an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth, find your connected AirPods, and tap the Info button. The model number is shown there. You can also find it printed on the underside of an earbud or, for AirPods Max, behind the left ear cushion.
| Model family | How to recognize the relevant setup difference | Key control method |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods 1 and 2 | Use a rear case setup button for pairing | Customizable double-tap gestures |
| AirPods 3 | Use a rear case setup button for pairing | Press the stem |
| AirPods 4 | Use the front of the case rather than a rear setup button | Press the stem; ANC model has additional listening modes |
| AirPods Pro 1 and 2 | Use a rear case setup button for pairing | Press the stem; listening-mode options vary by model |
| AirPods Pro 3 | Use the front of the case rather than a rear setup button | Press the stem and use its supported listening modes |
| AirPods Max 1 and 2 | Use the listening-mode button for pairing | Digital Crown and listening-mode button |
If you are replacing a lost or worn-out pair, compare the exact model rather than searching only for “AirPods.” Apple AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 do not use the same case-pairing procedure, while AirPods Max 2 uses entirely different over-ear controls.

2. Connect AirPods to an iPhone or iPad
- Update the iPhone or iPad to the latest compatible version of iOS or iPadOS.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
- For AirPods or AirPods Pro, place both earbuds in the charging case and open the lid.
- Hold the open case next to the iPhone or iPad.
- When the setup animation appears, follow the instructions and tap Done.
For AirPods Max, remove the headphones from their Smart Case and hold them close to the iPhone or iPad. The setup animation should appear within about 60 seconds.
If the animation does not appear, pair manually using the model-specific instructions in the next section. After AirPods are set up with one Apple device, they can usually connect automatically to other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Network access may be needed during setup for Find My features.
3. Put each AirPods model into pairing mode
AirPods 1, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods Pro 1, and AirPods Pro 2
- Put both earbuds in the charging case and open the lid.
- Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about five seconds.
- Release it when the status light flashes white.
- Open the Bluetooth menu on the device and select the AirPods.
AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3
- Put both earbuds in the case and open the lid.
- Double-tap the front of the case.
- Continue until the status light flashes white.
- Select the AirPods from the device’s Bluetooth list.
This front-of-case double-tap is the most important difference between newer models such as AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 and older button-equipped cases. Do not look for a rear setup button if your case is one of these newer models.
AirPods Max
- Remove AirPods Max from the Smart Case.
- Press and hold the listening-mode button for about five seconds.
- Wait for the status light to flash white.
- Select AirPods Max in the device’s Bluetooth settings.
4. Connect AirPods to a Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Vision Pro
Mac
Open System Settings > Bluetooth, turn Bluetooth on, place the AirPods into pairing mode, and select them from the list.

On the watch, open Settings > Bluetooth, put the AirPods into pairing mode, and choose them.
Apple TV
On Apple TV, go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth. Put the AirPods into pairing mode and select them.
Apple Vision Pro
Open Settings > Bluetooth, put the AirPods into pairing mode, and select them.
There is one specialized Vision Pro exception: AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2 with a USB-C case, and AirPods Pro 3 can provide lossless audio with ultra-low latency when paired with Apple Vision Pro. This does not mean that every AirPods model provides lossless audio with an iPhone, Android phone, Windows PC, or ordinary Bluetooth connection.

5. Connect AirPods to Android, Windows, or another non-Apple device
- Open Bluetooth settings on the Android phone, Windows PC, or other device.
- Turn Bluetooth on.
- Put the AirPods into pairing mode using the instructions for your model above.
- Select the AirPods when they appear in the available-device list.
AirPods work as Bluetooth headphones and microphones on non-Apple devices, so you can generally listen and talk. Siri is not available through the non-Apple pairing path.
Expect fewer features outside Apple platforms. Apple Account integration, automatic switching between devices, Siri, and some Find My capabilities may be unavailable or behave differently. If a Windows computer cannot see the AirPods, troubleshoot the computer’s Bluetooth hardware, drivers, and settings rather than treating the problem as an AirPods control problem.
6. Charge the AirPods and charging case
Put the earbuds in their case whenever you are not using them. The case stores multiple full charges for the earbuds. The case itself can be charged with or without the earbuds inside.
Charge with a cable
Use the correct cable for the case: USB-C for a USB-C case or Lightning for a Lightning case. Apple says charging is fastest when the case is connected to an iPhone or iPad USB power adapter or to a Mac.

Charge wirelessly
Wireless charging depends on the exact case. Compatible cases can use a Qi-certified charging mat or a MagSafe charger. The AirPods Pro 2 MagSafe case, AirPods Pro 3 case, and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation wireless case can also work with an Apple Watch charger.
- Close the charging-case lid.
- Place the case on the charger with the status light facing up.
- For AirPods 4 with ANC, center the case flat on the charger.
Do not assume that every AirPods case supports Qi, MagSafe, or Apple Watch charging. Verify the case model first. A Qi wireless charger for AirPods or MagSafe charger for AirPods is appropriate only when its charging standard matches the case.
Understand the status light
- Green: the case or earbuds are fully charged, depending on what the light is reporting.
- Amber: less than one full charge remains.
- Earbuds in the case: the light reports the earbuds’ charging status.
- Earbuds removed: the light reports the charging case’s status.
Check battery percentage
On iPhone or iPad, open the case or remove the earbuds and hold them near the device. You can also go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the Info button next to the AirPods, and view their battery information.

Optimized Battery Charging
Optimized Battery Charging is available for AirPods Pro and AirPods 3 or later. It is designed to reduce the amount of time the earbuds remain fully charged and is enabled by default when supported devices are set up or updated. On supported current models, charging notifications can be enabled from the AirPods settings under Battery.
7. Use AirPods controls by model
Control behavior depends on the generation and operating system. On an iPhone or iPad, connect the AirPods, go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the Info button beside them, and adjust the available controls. On a Mac, open the AirPods settings in macOS to change supported actions.
| Model | Primary control | Typical actions |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods 1 and 2 | Double-tap an earbud | Play or pause, activate Siri, skip tracks, or answer a call, depending on your assignments |
| AirPods 3 and 4 | Press the stem | Play or pause, skip forward or backward, answer or end calls, and use supported Siri or listening-mode actions |
| AirPods Pro 1, 2, and 3 | Press the stem | Control playback and calls, activate Siri, and switch among the listening modes supported by that model |
| AirPods Max | Digital Crown and listening-mode button | Control playback, volume, calls, Siri, and listening modes |
Do not assume that a gesture available on AirPods Pro 2 is available on AirPods 1 or 2. Apple’s settings show only the actions supported by the connected model.
AirPods Max controls
- Press the Digital Crown: play or pause audio.
- Double-click the Digital Crown: skip forward.
- Triple-click the Digital Crown: go back.
- Turn the Digital Crown: change volume.
- Press the listening-mode button: switch among supported noise-control modes.
- Press and hold the Digital Crown: activate Siri.
Head gestures on newer models
AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2 can support head gestures for accepting or declining calls and responding to notifications when Announce Calls and Announce Notifications are enabled. Availability depends on the model and operating-system support, so do not expect this feature on every AirPods generation.
8. Use Siri and announced notifications
When AirPods are connected to an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch, Siri can help find information, control media, handle calls, and announce notifications. The activation method and available gestures depend on the AirPods model and the operating system.
On newer supported models, head gestures can be used for certain call and notification responses when Announce Calls and Announce Notifications are turned on. On Android or another non-Apple device, Siri is not provided through the Bluetooth pairing connection.
9. Find lost AirPods with Find My
- Open Find My on the iPhone.
- Tap Devices.
- Select the AirPods.
- Choose the locating action available for that model, such as viewing the map, playing a sound, or using nearby-finding guidance.
Supported AirPods may appear on a map, play a sound, or provide nearby-finding guidance. Some models can handle a separated left earbud, right earbud, and charging case separately.

Find My has important limits. If the AirPods are offline or out of battery, it may show only their last known location and may not be able to play a sound or provide nearby finding. Supported models can use the Find My network after their last connection, but support depends on the model, settings, and regional availability.
Set up loss protections before you need them
While the AirPods are connected, verify that Find My network and Notify When Left Behind are configured in the AirPods’ settings. Waiting until after the earbuds disappear can leave you with only a last known location.
If the earbuds or case are lost and replacement is necessary, use Apple’s current replacement or service process and verify the exact missing component. Do not assume that a replacement earbud or case will have the same charging connector or wireless-charging capability as the original.
Remove AirPods before selling or giving them away
Before transferring AirPods to another person, remove them from the previous owner’s Apple Account and Find My. This allows the next owner to pair them and use the associated features.
10. Fix AirPods that will not connect
Use this escalation sequence rather than resetting immediately:
- Check the basics: confirm Bluetooth is on and the iPhone, iPad, Mac, or other host device has current software.
- Re-seat the earbuds: put both earbuds in the case, close the lid for at least 10 seconds, then open it and try again.
- Forget and pair again: on the paired device, open the AirPods’ Bluetooth details and choose Forget This Device or Forget Device, then repeat model-specific pairing.
- Reset the AirPods: use the correct procedure below if the connection problem remains.
Reset AirPods 1, 2, 3, Pro 1, or Pro 2
- Close the charging-case lid for 30 seconds.
- Open the lid.
- Press and hold the setup button on the back for about 15 seconds.
- Release it when the status light flashes amber and then white.
- Pair the AirPods again.
Reset AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3
- Close the case for 30 seconds.
- Open the lid.
- Double-tap the front of the case three times.
- Wait for the reset sequence to complete, then pair the AirPods again.
Reset AirPods Max
- Press and hold the Digital Crown and listening-mode button together.
- Continue for about 15 seconds.
- Release when the status light changes from amber to white.
- Pair AirPods Max again.
If Active Noise Cancellation is weak
- Update the host device’s software and allow the AirPods firmware to update.
- Check that the external microphones are not blocked.
- For AirPods Pro, make sure the ear tips form a good seal.
- If fit is the problem, correctly sized AirPods Pro replacement ear tips may help, but they must be compatible with the exact Pro generation.
A model-specific AirPods charging case cover can protect a portable case from scratches and drops, but it cannot correct a pairing, battery, or ANC fault. Check the case generation and connector before buying a cover.
11. Keep AirPods firmware current
AirPods firmware updates are delivered automatically. There is no general manual firmware-update button to press.
- Pair the AirPods with an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- Keep the AirPods within Bluetooth range of that device.
- Keep the host device updated.
- Leave the AirPods in their case and charging nearby.
To check the installed firmware version on an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the Info button next to the AirPods, and view the device information. On a Mac, open the AirPods’ Bluetooth details.

12. Clean and care for AirPods safely
Use Apple’s cleaning instructions for the specific AirPods or AirPods Pro model. The materials and openings differ, particularly between earbuds, silicone ear tips, charging cases, and AirPods Max cushions.
- Keep moisture out of charging ports and other openings.
- Never charge components while they are wet.
- Do not use sharp tools to remove debris.
- Do not use unverified liquids.
- Avoid aggressive compressed-air techniques that can push debris farther inside.
A soft electronics cleaning kit can be useful for gentle exterior maintenance, but it should not replace the model-specific safety instructions. Do not apply liquid directly to the earbuds or charging case.
AirPods setup checklist

- Verify Find My network and Notify When Left Behind.
