That is encouraging evidence for those two bands—not a lifespan guarantee. Apple’s guidance is clear about the main trade-off: leather is not recommended for water or workouts.
What the long-term review found
AppleInsider published its review on August 7, 2022, nearly two years after Apple introduced Leather Link in 2020. The reviewers reported wearing two bands almost daily over the period, with each getting about a year of wear on average. Both showed visible wear, more noticeable on the lighter California Poppy finish. Neither was stretched or misshapen; the reviewers also said the fit was unchanged, the magnets remained strong, and the lugs were undamaged. Read AppleInsider’s review.
Those observations apply to the two bands in that review. They do not establish a typical lifespan, failure rate, or how another band will age. The review offers no controlled durability testing or objective measurement of magnet strength.
What visible wear means for leather
Some change in appearance is normal for leather. Apple says leather usually develops a patina through ordinary wear and may change color after exposure to substances such as perfume, insect repellent, oil, or lotion, or to dyed materials such as denim. Visible change alone does not show that a band has lost its shape or fastening function. Apple’s cleaning guidance explains how leather bands may age.

Water, workouts, and care
Apple lists Leather Link among leather bands that are not recommended for water or workouts. Its guidance also recommends keeping the watch and bands clean and dry to support comfort and help prevent long-term damage. Apple’s wearing guidance covers material and use considerations.
Clean it without adding avoidable wear
- Remove the leather band from the watch before cleaning.
- Wipe the band with a nonabrasive, lint-free cloth.
- Let it dry before attaching it to the watch again.
Apple’s cleaning instructions also explain that exposure to cosmetics, oils, and dyed fabrics can affect leather color.

Fit and condition matter
Apple advises wearing the watch snugly but comfortably, with its back in contact with the skin so features such as Wrist Detect and heart sensors can work as intended. A fit that is too loose or too tight can cause problems. If the band irritates your skin, fit and material sensitivity are among the factors to consider. See Apple’s fit guidance.
In AppleInsider’s review, the reviewer found that the M/L band overlapped far enough to touch the opposite edge of the watch and chose S/M instead. That is one person’s sizing experience, not a general sizing rule. For a used or old-stock band, check the size marking and inspect the leather, magnets, and connectors rather than assuming another owner’s fit or wear will match yours.

Is Leather Link still available?
Apple’s support page identifies Leather Link as a previously available band. In a September 12, 2023 announcement, Apple said it was ending the use of leather across its product lines, including Apple Watch bands. New availability therefore depends on remaining or third-party stock; a listing’s presence does not by itself establish its condition or authenticity. Apple’s announcement explains the change.

If you already own a Leather Link and it remains comfortable, holds its shape, and fastens securely, the limited review evidence gives no reason to treat ordinary visible patina as a failure. Use a different band for workouts or water exposure, and assess your own band’s condition rather than relying on a predicted service life that available evidence does not establish.

If you are considering a used or old-stock Leather Link, its dress-oriented leather finish may suit you better than a band intended for frequent water or exercise. Before buying, confirm the size, inspect current photographs for wear and damage, check the seller, and review the return policy.
