Apple released watchOS 10.5 on May 13, 2024. What watchOS 10.5 added
Apple’s update summary names the Pride Radiance watch face, created to honour LGBTQ+ communities and culture. Apple describes the release as including “new features, improvements and bug fixes,” but the face is the specific user-facing addition identified in its summary. Apple did not present watchOS 10.5 as a broad redesign. Features associated with the original watchOS 10 platform release should not be attributed specifically to 10.5.
Security fixes were an important reason to update
Apple’s watchOS 10.5 security advisory lists issues affecting different components and device ranges. Examples include:

- AppleMobileFileIntegrity: an issue could allow access to user data.
- AVEVideoEncoder: an app could execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges.
The latter entries are listed for Apple Watch Series 4 and later. Apple describes fixes to these issues; the advisory does not establish that every user was exposed or that every issue was exploited in the wild. Check Apple’s advisory for the complete, potentially amended list of affected components, impacts, device ranges and CVEs.
Apple Watch compatibility
Apple lists watchOS 10.5 as available for Apple Watch Series 4 and later. Some security entries apply to narrower device ranges, so the release’s general compatibility should not be mistaken for the affected-device scope of each vulnerability. Use Software Update to check what your particular watch can install.

What you need before installing an update

The download and installation may take from several minutes to an hour, according to Apple’s iPhone update instructions. Avoid removing the watch from its charger while installation is in progress.
What to do if an update does not appear or fails
- Check availability: Apple lists later watchOS 10 versions, through 10.6.2. Your watch may be offered a later compatible update rather than 10.5; check Software Update for what is available to your device.
- Check the basics: connect to Wi-Fi, charge the watch to at least 50%, and leave it on its charger.
- Use either supported route: check in the paired iPhone’s Watch app under My Watch > General > Software Update, or on the watch under Settings > General > Software Update.
- Allow time: the process can take from several minutes to an hour, and the watch may restart.
- Do not interrupt installation: leave the watch on its charger and follow Apple’s on-screen instructions.
Developer note: watchOS 10.5 SDK
Apple’s watchOS 10.5 release notes say the SDK was bundled with Xcode 15.4. They describe two resolved StoreKit issues: a crash involving the Terms of Service button in SubscriptionStoreView, and a problem in which ExternalPurchaseLink.open() did not open an external purchase URL.

These were developer-facing fixes for apps using the affected interfaces, not consumer-facing Apple Watch features.
