Apple released watchOS 10.6 on July 29, 2024, as a maintenance and security update for Apple Watch Series 4 and later. Apple’s advisory describes fixes for vulnerabilities affecting privacy, sensitive data, files, images, and web content; its impact statements describe potential outcomes, not proof of attacks on every watch. Apple’s developer notes say there are no new release notes for the update, and Apple lists later watchOS 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 releases.
What watchOS 10.6 changed
Apple’s developer release notes state, “There are no new release notes for this software update.” They also say the watchOS 10.5 SDK bundled with Xcode 15.4 supports developing apps for devices running watchOS 10.6. This means Apple documented no new developer-facing release-note changes; it does not establish that no user-facing behavior changed.
What security issues did watchOS 10.6 fix?
Apple’s security advisory lists issues across multiple system components. The described potential impacts include an app bypassing Privacy preferences, exposure of sensitive location or user data, unexpected app or process termination, denial of service, an unexpected system shutdown caused by a local attacker, and attacks involving maliciously crafted images, files, or web content.
Apple describes mitigations such as additional code-signing restrictions, improved input validation and bounds checking, improved data protection and memory handling, and restrictions on options available while a device is locked. These are conditional vulnerability impacts, not evidence that every user was affected or that an attack occurred.
