Apple released watchOS 26.1 beta 1 to developers on September 22, 2025. It was the first pre-release build of watchOS 26.1—not a stable update for every Apple Watch owner—and its documented changes were primarily HealthKit and SwiftUI fixes rather than a major new consumer feature.
This release is now historical. As of September 2026, Apple’s developer release notes list later watchOS 26.x builds and watchOS 27 betas, so watchOS 26.1 beta 1 is not the current Apple Watch beta.

HealthKit blood-pressure correlation fix
Apple says watchOS 26.1 fixes an issue in which blood-pressure HKCorrelation objects could fail to save unless they contained exactly one systolic and one diastolic quantity sample. This matters primarily to apps that create or process blood-pressure data through HealthKit.
Corrected HealthKit authorization interface
The release notes also address the HealthKit authorization interface on watchOS. It had incorrectly displayed separate switches for systolic and diastolic blood pressure instead of one combined authorization switch, matching the behavior on iOS and visionOS.
SwiftUI navigation-link crash fix
Apple lists a fix for a crash involving SwiftUI’s navigationLinkIndicatorVisibility modifier on iOS 17, iOS 18, and aligned releases. Developers must recompile their apps against the 26.1 SDK to receive this particular fix. That requirement applies to the documented SDK fix; it should not be generalized to every Apple Watch app or user.
These changes may be important for app compatibility without producing an obvious visual difference for most watch owners. The release notes do not support claims that beta 1 improved battery life, performance, cellular reliability, or general responsiveness.

Which Apple Watch models support watchOS 26?
Apple’s compatibility guidance lists the following models for the watchOS 26 family:
| Apple Watch | watchOS 26 compatibility |
|---|---|
| Apple Watch Series 6 and later | Compatible |
| Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and later | Compatible |
| Apple Watch Ultra and later | Compatible |
| Apple Watch Series 5 and earlier | Not compatible |
| Original Apple Watch SE | Not compatible |
Apple’s watchOS update guidance says watchOS 26 requires an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (3rd generation) or later, running iOS 26 or later. A compatible watch alone is therefore not enough.
Compatibility with watchOS 26 also does not guarantee that every feature will work on every model. Feature availability can vary by hardware, region, account, and paired-iPhone software. Beta distribution may also differ between users.

Who could install the first beta?
Developers
watchOS 26.1 beta 1 was released to developers enrolled in Apple’s developer beta program. It was intended for app testing, SDK compatibility work, and bug reporting—not as a routine upgrade for an everyday watch.
Rank #3

The smartwatch sends alerts for an irregular heart rhythm, or an unusually high or low heart rate.* You can view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app,* track your sleep score, and get sleep apnea notifications.*
- A GREAT FITNESS TRACKER—SE 3 can track your workouts in a healthy number of ways—from running and strength training to simply achieving your 10K steps a day. With real-time metrics and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone,* you’ll hit your goals like never before.

Public beta testers
Developer-beta availability and public-beta availability are separate milestones. The fact that Apple released beta 1 to developers on September 22, 2025 does not establish that the same build was available to public beta testers at that moment. Public access depends on Apple’s separate Apple Beta Software Program distribution.
Everyday Apple Watch owners
Ordinary users did not need to install this beta. Anyone who prioritizes dependable fitness, sleep, health, notifications, cellular service, battery life, travel, or emergency use was better served by staying on the latest public watchOS release available at the time.
How to install a compatible watchOS beta
For a developer or tester who accepts the risks, the usual process is:
Rank #4
- GET SMARTER HEALTH INSIGHTS—Apple Watch SE 3 is an advanced health tracker that helps you better understand your body. The smartwatch sends alerts for an irregular heart rhythm, or an unusually high or low heart rate.* You can view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app,* track your sleep score, and get sleep apnea notifications.*

- Update the paired iPhone to the required iOS beta or compatible public version.
- Enroll the Apple Account in the appropriate Apple beta program.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then General, then Software Update.
- Select the available beta and follow the onscreen instructions.
- Keep the Apple Watch on its charger during installation.
Apple recommends at least 50% battery, a charger connection, and avoiding a restart while the update is installing. Apple says installation can take several minutes or about an hour.
On compatible software versions, Apple also documents an on-watch route:
- Open Settings on the Apple Watch.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Tap Install if the update is offered.
- Keep the watch connected to Wi-Fi and its charger.
The paired iPhone, beta enrollment, model compatibility, and required operating-system versions still apply. The update will not necessarily appear simply because the watch can run watchOS 26.
If watchOS 26.1 beta does not appear
- Check that the Apple Watch is a supported Series, SE, or Ultra model.
- Confirm that the paired iPhone meets the iPhone 11-or-later or iPhone SE (3rd generation)-or-later requirement and runs the required iOS version.
- Verify that the correct beta channel is enabled for the Apple Account.
- Put the watch on its charger and make sure its battery is at least 50%.
- Use a reliable Wi-Fi connection.
- Restart both the Apple Watch and the paired iPhone.
- On the iPhone, open Apple Watch > General > Storage and delete a stuck update file, then try again.
If the watch shows an iPhone-and-watch recovery graphic or a red exclamation point, use Apple’s separate Apple Watch recovery procedure. It requires a nearby unlocked iPhone, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the Apple Watch charger.

Should you install an Apple Watch beta?
Install it only if you develop Apple Watch apps, need to test HealthKit integrations against the 26.1 SDK, or have nonessential test hardware. Developers should be prepared to report bugs through Apple’s feedback tools and to test apps across the devices and iPhone versions they support.
Wait if the watch is your only device or if you rely on it for daily workouts, sleep tracking, health data, notifications, cellular connectivity, travel, work, or emergency functions. Beta software can cause app crashes, pairing problems, missing functionality, inconsistent battery behavior, and connectivity or health-feature regressions. Third-party apps may also need updates.
Downgrade and backup warnings
Do not treat a watchOS beta as something that can be easily uninstalled. Removing a beta profile through Apple Watch app > My Watch > General > Profiles stops future beta delivery; it does not necessarily return the watch immediately to an earlier public watchOS version.

Before installing, assume you may need to remain on the beta until Apple releases a compatible public build. Apple Watch downgrade options are more limited than a normal update and may require service or a later public release. Apple also warns in its beta removal and restore guidance that backups made on beta software may not be usable after returning to an earlier public operating-system version.
Current status
watchOS 26.1 beta 1 is no longer the latest Apple Watch beta as of September 2026. Apple’s watchOS release-notes index lists later watchOS 26.x releases, including 26.6 beta builds, as well as watchOS 27 betas. The September 22, 2025 launch should therefore be read as a historical developer-beta release, not as a current rollout.
