There is no single switch for every fitness feature on an iPhone and Apple Watch. To control Apple Watch activity tracking, open Health → your profile picture → Devices → Apple Watch → Privacy Settings → Fitness Tracking, then turn the switch on or off. iPhone motion permissions, app access, reminders, Activity sharing, stored records, and iCloud syncing use separate controls.
Turn Apple Watch fitness tracking on
- Open the Health app on your iPhone.
- Tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Devices.
- Select Apple Watch.
- Tap Privacy Settings.
- Turn on Fitness Tracking.
This is the Apple-documented setting to check when Health is not recording steps or other information from your Apple Watch. Activity data may not appear immediately if the watch is disconnected, has been inactive, or has not finished synchronizing. The setting affects future collection; it cannot restore records that were never saved.

Apple Watch can automatically contribute Activity, heart-rate, and Mindfulness data to Health, while the iPhone can independently record movement such as steps and walking distance. See Apple’s Health data guidance for the current details.

Turn Apple Watch fitness tracking off
- Open Health on the iPhone.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Devices → Apple Watch → Privacy Settings.
- Turn off Fitness Tracking.
This is intended to stop or limit the Apple Watch’s fitness and activity tracking. It does not automatically delete existing Health records, disable every heart, sleep, safety, location, or medical-related feature, or erase information already held by a third-party app or its account.

Control iPhone motion and fitness access
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Motion & Fitness.
- Review the available controls and turn the relevant switch on or off.
The exact switches and wording can vary by iOS version, device, language, and configuration. Motion & Fitness is not necessarily a universal master switch for every Apple fitness function. If your goal is specifically to stop Apple Watch Activity data, use the Apple Watch control in Health instead. Apple describes the privacy category in its Motion & Fitness permissions documentation.
Stop one app from reading or writing Health data
To keep Apple’s own tracking but block an app such as Strava, Fitbit, MyFitnessPal, or a workout app:
- Open Health.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Under Privacy, tap Apps.
- Select the app.
- Turn individual Health categories on or off.
Health permissions are category-specific. An app may also have separate privacy controls inside its own settings. Revoking permission does not necessarily delete data that the app previously uploaded to its own servers or account.

Stop a source contributing duplicate or inaccurate data
If steps or workouts are being duplicated, do not necessarily disable all tracking. Instead, manage the source for the affected metric:
- Open Health and choose a category, such as Activity.
- Select a metric, such as Steps.
- Scroll down and tap Data Sources & Access.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap the checkmark beside a third-party source to disable it, or reorder sources to change priority.
Health can receive information from the iPhone, Apple Watch, compatible apps, and connected accessories. The source list helps identify why data continues to appear after one device or app has been restricted. Apple explains source management in its Health data support article.
Turn off activity reminders without disabling tracking
To keep collecting activity data but stop prompts and coaching on Apple Watch, open Settings → Activity on the watch. Adjust the notification settings or turn off Daily Coaching.

These controls affect reminders, coaching, and notifications—not necessarily the underlying collection of activity data. See Apple’s Apple Watch Activity guide and Fitness notification guide.
Hide or stop sharing your Activity rings
If your concern is another person seeing your progress, change Activity sharing rather than disabling tracking.

- On iPhone: Open Fitness → Sharing, select the person, tap the more button, then choose Remove Friend or Hide my Activity.
Apple says Activity sharing shows activity level and workouts, not your location. More information is available in Apple’s personal safety guide.

Turning tracking off does not erase historical data. To delete records for one metric:
- Open Health and tap Search.
- Choose a category and metric, such as Activity → Steps.
- Scroll to Options and tap Show All Data.
- Tap Edit.
- Delete individual entries or choose Delete All, then tap Done.
Deletion may be irreversible, so preserve or export information first if you might need it later. Deleting the Health app itself does not necessarily delete Health data stored on the iPhone.

Stop Health data syncing through iCloud
This is an advanced privacy and data-management choice, not the normal way to turn fitness tracking off.
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap iCloud.
- Tap See All or Show All.
- Tap Health.
- Turn off Sync this iPhone or Sync with iPhone.
If you are offered an option such as Manage Storage → Delete Data From iCloud → Disable and Delete, read the warning carefully. Deleting synced iCloud Health data can affect other devices using the same Apple Account. Turning off synchronization is not the same as deleting every local Health record. Apple documents this in its Health data and iCloud guide.
Fitness tracking still is not working
- Check the correct control: Apple Watch tracking is managed in Health under the watch’s Privacy Settings; iPhone app permissions are under Motion & Fitness.
- Identify the source: Open the affected Health metric and check Data Sources & Access.
- Check the connection: Confirm the watch is paired in the Apple Watch app, keep it near the iPhone, and ensure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are available.
- Check Health permissions: Review Health → profile picture → Apps for any app involved.
- Restart and update: Restart both devices and install available iOS or watchOS updates if practical.
If Apple Watch does not appear under Health → profile picture → Devices, it may not be paired, connected, or recognized yet. Menu names can also differ by software build, language, and region. These steps are sensible checks, but no single fix is guaranteed for every missing-device problem.
