Apple Says Apple Watch Bands Are Safe to Wear After PFAS Report and Lawsuit

Apple says its Watch bands are safe, but a study of 22 anonymized smartwatch bands did not identify any positive sample as an Apple product or measure health effects from wearing one. A March 2026 court ruling let several lawsuit claims proceed without deciding whether the allegations are true.

Apple says its Apple Watch bands are safe to wear, but the available research does not establish that any named Apple band tested positive or that wearing one causes harm. A University of Notre Dame study found elevated PFHxA in 9 of 22 anonymized smartwatch and fitness-tracker bands and high total fluorine in 15 of 22. The researchers did not identify a specific Apple band among the positive samples.

A proposed class action has made allegations about Apple Watch bands. On March 16, 2026, a federal judge allowed several claims to proceed and dismissed others with leave to amend. That was a procedural ruling, not a scientific finding or a decision that Apple is liable.

Evidence status: the study reports chemical measurements, not a demonstrated health effect from wearing a particular band. Apple says its bands are safe and says it uses its own and independent-laboratory testing. The study did not identify which samples belonged to Apple, and the lawsuit’s claims remain allegations.

What the PFAS study actually found

A University of Notre Dame research team tested 22 smartwatch and fitness-tracker bands purchased in the United States across brands and price points. The team used particle-induced gamma-ray emission ion beam analysis and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry to examine the bands’ chemistry.[c_notredame]

  • 9 of 22 bands contained elevated levels of perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), a PFAS compound.
  • 15 of 22 bands had high total-fluorine concentrations, which the researchers used as a marker of possible PFAS.
  • The researchers said the remaining samples could contain other surfactants not included in their targeted analysis.

These findings describe the tested band samples. They do not identify a positive sample as a specific Apple model, measure exposure during actual wear, or establish a health outcome among Apple Watch users.[c_notredame]

The samples were not identified as Apple products

The study’s accessible reporting does not name the brands or models associated with positive samples. It therefore does not support claims that an Apple Sport Band, Nike Sport Band, or Ocean Band tested positive. Those products appear in the lawsuit’s allegations, not as identified positive samples in the study.[c_notredame] [c_9to5_study]

The university account reported that all three bands in the study’s expensive category had significantly elevated fluorine, while the five inexpensive bands had less than 1 percent total fluorine. Those are findings about the study’s small price categories, not a safety rule or evidence about a particular brand.[c_notredame]

Total fluorine is not a direct measure of health risk

Total fluorine can serve as a marker of possible PFAS, but it does not identify every chemical in a band or establish what a wearer absorbs. A PFHxA measurement in band material likewise does not show how much transfers to skin, how much enters the body, or whether a wearer will become ill. The research account says more study is needed to understand dermal absorption and actual exposure from wearing bands.[c_notredame] [c_wicks_quote]

What PFHxA means in the health discussion

PFAS is a broad family of chemicals; PFHxA is one compound discussed in the band study. A finding of PFHxA in a band sample is not, by itself, evidence that wearing that band causes a particular health condition.

The university account notes limited research on dermal absorption and says more research is needed to understand how PFAS may travel through skin and what exposure band wearers may receive. The evidence reviewed here does not establish a health effect from wearing a specific Apple Watch band.[c_notredame] [c_wicks_quote]

What Apple says about its bands

In a statement reported by MacRumors on January 23, 2025, Apple said: “Apple Watch bands are safe for users to wear. In addition to our own testing, we also work with independent laboratories to conduct rigorous testing and analysis of the materials used in our products, including Apple Watch bands.” This is Apple’s position, not an independent finding about the study’s samples.[c_apple_statement]

Apple’s separate November 2022 white paper commits to phasing out PFAS from Apple products and manufacturing processes. Apple said completing the work would take time because it needed to inventory uses, develop alternatives that meet performance requirements, and qualify materials. The document gives no completion date.[c_apple_phaseout]

The phaseout commitment describes Apple’s stated policy and goals. It does not establish that every current or past Apple Watch band contains no PFAS, nor does it prove that a particular band is unsafe.

What the lawsuit alleges and what the court decided

The complaint filed January 21, 2025, names Apple Watch Sport Band, Ocean Band, and Nike Sport Band and alleges they contain excessive PFAS and were marketed without adequate disclosure. Those are plaintiffs’ allegations, not established facts.[c_complaint]

On March 16, 2026, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California granted Apple’s motion to dismiss in part and denied it in part. The court allowed fraudulent-concealment/omission, negligent-misrepresentation, unjust-enrichment, and California Unfair Competition Law claims to proceed. It dismissed fraudulent-misrepresentation and implied-warranty-of-merchantability claims with leave to amend.[c_court_order]

The ruling addressed whether claims could proceed at the pleading stage. It did not decide whether Apple bands contain PFHxA, whether wearing them causes harm, or whether Apple is liable.

Should you stop wearing an Apple Watch band?

The study and court order described here do not establish that every Apple Watch owner needs to stop wearing an Apple band. The study did not identify an Apple model among its positive samples, and it did not measure exposure or health outcomes from wearing a specific band.

Choosing an alternative band

If you are considering a different band, check the exact product’s stated materials, compatibility with your watch, closure and fit, and intended use. The sources reviewed for this article do not verify a specific alternative band as PFAS-free or safer. Do not treat “silicone” or other general material descriptions as proof of PFAS absence or safety.[c_complaint]

If you have a rash or irritation

  1. Stop wearing the band that appears to be causing the reaction.
  2. Clean and dry both your wrist and the band, and avoid wearing it again while the skin is irritated.
  3. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist, worsen, or are severe.

A rash can have many causes. Stopping use is a sensible precaution, but it does not show that PFAS caused the reaction.

How to read future headlines about this issue

  1. Was a specific Apple model identified? The study’s accessible reporting does not identify a positive sample as an Apple band.
  2. Was PFHxA measured, or was total fluorine reported? The study reports both targeted PFHxA findings and total-fluorine results; they are different measurements.
  3. Was actual exposure or a health outcome measured? The band chemistry findings do not establish what a wearer absorbs or a resulting health effect.
  4. Is the legal development procedural or final? The March 2026 order addressed claims at the pleading stage; it was not a final judgment on the allegations.

The evidence supports a careful summary: a Notre Dame study found elevated PFHxA in some sampled smartwatch bands, but did not name a positive Apple sample or demonstrate harm from wearing one. Apple says its bands are safe, and the lawsuit’s allegations have not been decided on the merits.
